I was actually going to delete the demo yesterday, after beating it enough times. I guess I'll hold on to it, for now.

Having already downloaded it, you can get it again from your download history. It's just no longer available to newcomers.

Japanese PSN takes demos down all the time. Not sure why.

@Cleric Sony required publishers to pay to have their stuff downloaded from the PSN network. They probably figured that they spent enough money based on the number of downloads.

Downloading things takes bandwidth and bandwidth costs money.
Seeing as how PSN is free, I guess you get what you payed for.

I prefer having the demos deleted rather than paying 50 dollars a year.
Thank you.

This happens to the US PSN as well. Try looking for the Sengoku Basara demo, for example.

@Cleric I remember when I went to download the Bayonetta demo from the Japanese PSN and it was gone. It happens a lot in Japan for some reason. Less so in North America.

If Sony charges for demo downloads, my guess is that they have a setup where the company pays in advance. So it wasn't so much that they took it down, as they paid Sony for up to X downloads, and now that's run out, and they aren't going to pay any more.

If they use this type of model (where it automatically runs out after hitting budget) then this would explain why demos are, apparently, frequently removed.

Atlas makes like the greatest of games, yet doesn't advertise them or even try to make them popular.

What the fawk is wrong with them?

@Juri - They don't make thousands of games. They make the persona series, and publish most of the other titles you'd attribute to them (such as Demon's Souls) which they had no hand in creating. All of the titles they create in house, and most of the titles they publish, are all low budget, and the advertising dollars just aren't there for an EA/Activision style marketing blitz. In addition to that, most of their games are Japan-centric. If they were to advertise, they'd do it in Japan, and not wherever you live (which I'm assuming isn't Japan).

They are one of my favorite publishers. You've always got to remember that they are a niche publisher though, and that they really can't compete with the marketing dollars of the bigger companies.

@BananaBoat Never have played those games, just everything else they have. Like Draglade, Robopon tons of PS2/GC/GBA games.

Well still, whatever they do with low budget far surpasses anything high budget games usually do.

I downloaded it from XBL. It's free on a Japanese XBL account (no longer a Gold only demo).

@KungFuChaosNinja - I did that as well. I have no idea if it is still up on XBL though (I'd imagine it is, since the article doesn't mention it).

It plays the same on either console, so if you were looking forward to the demo, and you have a 360, you might as well set yourself up a free Japanese XBL account (it's easy).

Never got the demo, but that intro movie confuses me greatly. So, it's a collage of movie scenes? What's with the Ringu girl climbing out of the TV?

@sigma8 It's an intro. It's not indicative of anything, so I don't know why they put that in the article.

Usually intros are at least indicative of...the atmosphere or something of the game. Take the WoW intro. It looked nothing like that game, but it still gave you a nice, glitzy overview of some of the races, places, and spells.

Are you saying this is more of an EDS Cat Herders intro?

Actually, I had even transliterated the katakana to golden, but had no idea what it meant. So yeah. Now it makes sense. All I knew about the game was that there were multiple Catherines, and you seem to spend a lot of time in your undies while at least partially transforming into a sheep or goat.

Pulling a demo because too many people downloaded it? Thats as stupid as pulling a commercial because too many people saw it.

Unless most of the people that saw the commercial found it offensive.

Perhaps a better way to say it would be pulling a commercial that suddenly made sales of your product go up.

This seems like an odd way for Sony to handle the PSN store. There has to be a way for them to give Atlus a break on this one.

Sony DOES make money every time a copy of the game is sold.

For people interested in still getting this demo, and have a 360, hop on your handy Japanese Live Free account, because the Catherine demo is still there, and open to all. As is some dungeon crawling First Person RPG title, "Students of Round", and the ever-popular GalGun, which isn't much fun at all, and has HORRIBLE loading times.

And I'd be willing to bet a sizable chunk of that bandwidth came from the west. Just remain silent on localizing it, Atlus. It's obvious that no one over here wants it...
