Kyocera Echo: a dual-screen Android gaming phone with two launch games
32
Nintendo may not be making a smartphone, but if it did, it might look a bit like the Kyocera Echo. Coming to Sprint later this year, it's being touted as the world's first "dual-touchscreen smartphone." At a preview event today, we got to see the phone running The Sims 3, optimized to take advantage of both screens. Unsurprisingly, it looked a lot like the DS version, albeit with higher-resolution graphics. The phone is set to launch with one other game, although a Sprint representative wouldn't reveal what it was.
Running on a custom Kyocera-skinned version of Android 2.2, the Echo augments the growing "fragmentation" problem that Google's mobile OS faces. Games must use Sprint's SDK to take advantage of both of the screens offered by the Echo. But, how many developers will flock to create games for a single device available on a single carrier? We're going to guess: not many. At least the phone will be able to play other Android games -- maybe even PlayStation Suite games, if the specs are up to snuff.

I do remember the same thing being said about the iphone.

@bxgt The difference being that any game you make for Iphone could be use on ANY Iphone and Ipod Touch (of course there are new ones coming that older models won't be able to play).
As for this, Android OS is available in MANY platforms and most developers make there games so it can work on as many Android Phones as possible...making a game (or any app for that matter) that uses the functions of this cellphone limits your potential Android market (which is pretty big, but somewhat fragmented) to just one Android cellphone...this one. You can probably see where the bad idea to developed (unless it sells MILLIONS of units) comes from.

@bxgt By the time the App Store was available, they already sold nearly six million original iPhones.
While this phone looks pretty cool for what it is, I can't imagine it ever hitting that number in its lifetime. Developers aren't going to be flocking to this device, they'll stick with stock Android development.

LOL @ you comparing this to the iPhone... They don't even have half the games that the App Store has on the REGULAR Marketplace for Android.
Andrew is right, this only adds to the fragmentation that comes with buying the Android platform. Hopefully it does support the PS Suite.

I'm surprised nobody on the design team said, "Hey, i think we made it look to much like a DS".

@Nofriendo If that were the case Apple could survive on patent lawsuits alone.

Wow, I wonder what that could look like...

Mmm...I am guessing they believe the clam-shell style allows for portability and at the same time offer a 'bigger' screen this way. I am just not sure this is what the market is asking for in all honesty.

Those pictures make me excited. If only it was a iOS device with a 3D camera and an ecompas and a bunch of different ways for it to connect wirelessly besides cellular networks. THe design is soopah sweet though. Imagine a keypad on thatyes.

From my understanding, the PS Suite was designed to only work on Android 2.3 and higher and since this is going to have 2.2, I'm not sure it would support it.

I want a handheld like those fold out picture sleeves where you open your wallet and 10 pictures flap out. Except instead of pictures it's screens.

I wouldn't trust Kyocera to design a wooden chair for me, let alone a seemingly "high profile" gaming-phone device.

Could be appealing for two screens in general. Facebook example there is nice, photo on bottom, wall on top.
With multi tasking it could lead to some pretty cool things if the phone ends up small..
Anywho, that's me trying to be an optimist. I doubt they could spawn a platform like that in this competition.
