New Skyrim screens show off ugly beasts and not-ugly humans
78
We've had to suffer four whole iterations of the Elder Scrolls franchise featuring characters with gaunt and terrifying faces. However, a recent flood of screens from OXM UK and PCGames.de give us hope that Skyrim's NPCs won't be quite as upsetting to gaze upon. Check out the new Skyrimages below.

either joystiq posted the wrong images or they failed to realize they are the exact screens that were in the gameinformer article a while ago.

Agreed, vomit-inducing breasts should be kept solely in the darkest corners of the internet. And on a close buddy's computer wallpaper.

What about that...thing in Dragon Age? You know, the one with all the breasts?
Oh, and the breasts in Dantes Infernos...the ones that spawned babies that were then hurled at you as if they were pebbles plucked from the ground?!
Ugly breasts are out there man. They're out there...

Christ, I am so against ugly breasts. Seriously, if you're gonna make that the highlight of a female character, at least make them good. I feel embarrassed to play a game where the developers couldn't render good boobs. (they can't get a model or something...?)

@Uberdave I actually did, and didn't realize that it said beasts until an hour or two later after coming back on the site haha. I was like... her breasts don't look too ugly.. but ok.

Well... you know, the pre-release screenshots of Oblivion looked pretty good to. Then in-game you walked passed the 2-4 normal looking people and found inbred villagers who think they see two of you.

Yeah, screenshots for Oblivion all seem to feature reasonably normal looking people, but when you actually play the game, it's horrible. The face on that woman in the one screenshot is tolerable, but not really promising.
I bet they still haven't gotten it right.
It's funny that I clicked this because I thought "Elder Scrolls with non-ugly people? That IS news!"

Yes. The hardest part of Oblivion was making a non-fugly character. Its like "Here is a dark room with bad lighting, good luck making a face."
Boondocks!

Wouldn't exactly call them new... anyways, can't wait to play some Bethesda games with character models that have some... well, character. Maybe not have the same guy with a different name run up to me with a random mission every once in a while. A world that doesn't look like it's populated by twins will be nice, it's gonna be great to see their characters finally be on par with their environments. Oblivion launched at the start of this console generation and it still looks damn good from an environmental perspective.

I also want to see a corpse. When you killed someone in either Oblivion or Fallout 3, the dead body would always...jiggle. In all sorts of weird ways. Especially if you used a rocket launcher at point blank in Fallout. The enemy model would get stuck in the floor or walls.

These look great. The real test though is when they start moving their mouths and looking around. If the animation still sucks it doesn't matter how gorgeous it looks, they'll be right back in the uncanny valley.

@KillTheApex Coming from a game design student, I honestly don't think you know what the Uncanny Valley is.
The Uncanny Valley is the space between where games are now and the theoretical point at which games become so realistic that they start to creep people out and make people not want to play them. So... that would push it away from that. Think of the other side of the UV as being the literal equivalent of controlling another human being.

@oJMan240o Well, they do creep me out. They look close to human but what kills it is the animation.
I guess what I am saying is that Bethesda needs to work on animation instead of better visuals. They go hand in hand. You have to have great animation to sell believability. That's why I can empathize with Pixar characters but don't care about Bethesda's characters.

No he's right. The Uncanny Valley is about the reaction to something resembling a human.
http://www.damninteresting.net/content/uncanny_valley_graph.gif
As you can see the closer something (robot, game character etc.) resembles a human the more familiar it seems. But there is a point where it becomes so close to human that its differences and imperfections become unnerving- like a corpse or a zombie.
The effect is multiplied when the "something" is moving.
That's what Apex was saying: seeing the characters in motion is the real test because that's where the Uncanny Valley hits hardest.

As mentioned, same pics as before. But I think before they were magazine scans so this is a little bit better.
Jury is still out on non-ugly humans. Blondie has nice hair, but she doesn't look any better than what modders can already do with Oblivion or FO3/NV.
I can tell right off the bat that the faces are still rendered in facegen. That just means they have different non-potatohead facial textures.

Not really... her shoulders are thin enough to be recognizable as a woman's. I think it's just her posture.
