PSA: Mythic shutting down some Warhammer Online servers
15
Okay now, nobody panic, but Mythic is closing down three servers in Warhammer Online. Specifically, the North American servers Iron Rock and Volkmar and the European server Corroburg will be disabled beginning three weeks from February 9. American players will be offered free transfers to the Gorfang server, while European players will have the option to transfer to Drakenwald. Furthermore, the Gorfang and Drakenwald servers will have the multi-realm ability enabled, which "allows accounts to have both Order and Destruction characters on the server and increases the character limit to 20."
Community coordinator James Nichols notes that the sever closures are being made to "enable players to experience more action during all hours whether fighting in scenarios or Open RvR." Head over to the Warhammer Online site for full details, including instructions for transferring guilds.

So how many servers are left?

Two, I believe.
Game seems to be in a pretty sad state of affairs now. I wouldn't be surprised to maybe try and see them further the free to play model from what it currently is (just tier 1 content) because I don't see many people paying to play this.

I enjoyed Warhammer Online for the month I played it: it did ALOT of the things that Blizzard has implemented into their game and some awesome things that they have yet to do. One big thing? Your character always looks awesome and doesn't have to spend a lot of in game gold or make the game a part time job and raid. They also had a much better PVP system than WOW has, to this day. Unfortunately, Wrath of the Lich King came out around a month after WO's release...and I fell back into the trap.
One thing this game did was GO AFTER WOW. I can't remember one of the leads on the game (Scottish or Irish fellow) but he had a pretty big mouth and was bashing WOW at every chance he could get and I think he even said this was a WOW killer at one time. The second he made a big deal about why WO had no "/dance" is when I knew he was a douche. Anyway, as is with most game PR he promised things that they didn't deliver in terms of the game's immersion "such as a lot of things they said about the witch hunter class". Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the game for what it was and the way the capital cities leveled up was cool (though was easily exploited by more people playing for the opposite factions).
Hopefully the game doesn't go the way of the Dodo. If they were smart, they would look into the Free 2 Play model. If LotRO is making as much bank as they are, then WO should roll in it since its such a better product.

I agree with your Wrath of the Lich King statement, I think timing crushed this thing. WoW was really in full stride at the time. It also probably suffered from appearing to be too similar to WoW, whether it was factual or not.

Basically, the game is dying :(
I've never played it other than the trial and it was fun (and populated) but I could never get into it enough to justify a subscription. Especially sine The Old Republic is just around the corner.

And as MMO's barely a couple years old begin to close down servers, the seven year old World of Warcraft has more players than ever. Lmao
I remember all the talk about this being a potential WoW killer. In retrospect, they probably shouldn't have poked at the beast.

After playing WoW for a number of years I decided to try out WAR. I'm sorry to say I found the experience extremely disappointing. Aside from a few small innovations it felt like every single aspect of the game had been copied from WoW, but somehow made worse during the process. The overall level of polish was extremely poor.
Unfortunately, I'm not surprised to see server closures.

Had a friend who was REALLLY into WO, but he, like I imagine many people, stopped playing and canceled their subscriptions after the overbilling fiasco a while back, where Mythic overcharged some people's bank cards by $400 in one month. Kinda left a sour taste in many people's mouths.

The irony being W.o.W is too similar to warhammer and warhammer 40K's respective universes. I really liked the game but it ran like ass on my new mb;whereas, WOW runs just fine. I also thought the Warhammer world lacked some of its dark humor.

All the game needed to do was be better than WoW, lol.
my main turn off was the graphics and the animations. I was still playing WoW at the time and WO just couldnt compete.

If the entire game was as good as tier 1 was, it wouldn't be in the sad position it is in now.
