@xIDz KinG

While I love retail releases, I'll have to disagree. Seeing how Psychonauts and Brutal Legend were financial bombs, I'd rather see Double Fine porfitable via digital distribution. One gigantic flop can put a company 6 feet under these days. With such risks involved, not only is it hard to get a publisher behind original concepts that Double Fine are known for, but it's a potential threat to your operation if it doesn't become a financial success. With digital distribution, Double Fine can create 6 hour creative masterpieces, i.e. Stacking, for a measly $15.

So in the end, it keeps Double Fine's doors open, it allows their new concepts to see the light of day, it allows us to play affordable creative titles, and these titles run on the same tech they used in Brutal Legend. What's not to like? Stacking is a better game than Brutal Legend, I'd argue.

Anyways, this game is phenomenal. Download it. Love it.

I totally agree. Double Fine are too quirky and original for big box releases. Digital is the way to go for them, and I'd like to see them expand onto other platforms too, like iOS.

I grabbed Stacking last night for free courtesy of PS Plus and I love it so far. Frame rate is a little dodgy on the PS3 version though.

@moroboshi I grabbed it for free as well as PS+ and I have to say that it is the best thing that I've gotten for free as a member.

I'm also going to have to agree with @KungFuChaosNinja. Maybe retail releases were just too large for Double Fine, and the charm and wit was spread too thin. Maybe after some really successful XBLA and PSN games they can expand and give the retail release another shot, but for now I'm more than happy to see Tim and the gang at Double Fine get their awesome ideas out and show off their creativity via downloadable games.

You can also get it with PSN+ if you're on the fence about investing in it.

@Raiki I was interested in lead and gold 2 weeks ago so just signed up for the 15 dollar 3 month just to be safe since it was the same price anyway. So far its definitely paying off.

If you're thinking about getting stacked just sign up for a playstation plus 3 month, can get the game for the same price plus any other free stuff that comes along for 3 months. Just remember to take your self off auto renew

You are aware that all free titles will be unable to function as soon as your subscription expires right?

@Epoque I just knew there was a catch to that program. I personally don't own a PS3, but if you were able to "own" the games even after you stopped your subscription, I'd consider getting a PS3, as I've been wanted to play a few PS3 exclusives for some time. It makes sense to expire the use of those said free games, if you end your subscription, because you are getting them for free. However, isn't there a limit on how much you can get per month? One arcade game, two minis, and one Ps3 classic, something like that. If that's the case, I wouldn't understand why it would have the catch of expiring your "free" games if you cancel your service, as they do however give you a limit per month. Seems a little sketchy for me personally, maybe it's a new program and they're still working out the kinks.

Um, guys, go ahead and PS+ if you want this game, seriously, I've already gotten a couple of games I really wanted for free like this and all of sam and max, and that sackboy thing, so yes, I would buy PS+. But if that program didn't exist, So far playing it, I would have put down the money. I spent so much time last night and the game actually made me not want to advance to the next level and just stick around trying to solve it in different ways.

@JonahStein I see the point, but I have no problem continuing a PS+ membership, just as I have no problem paying for my XBL. I've gotten so many free PSmini's to play on my PSP and PS3, as well as multiple PS3 games and PSOne Classics for free that my PS+ membership has already paid for itself.

I was honestly skeptical at first, but now I really feel like MS needs to up the ante with more discounts on games and content for gold members, or maybe actually finish the Gold-only Gamer "TV channel" that's been rumored forever on XBL.

I am a playstation plus member so it was sweet to get a free game even better when it's as fun as this one. Would def be worth the $$$ otherwise. I got hooked right off the bat. Only negative remark is that it really would be better with voice-over. Step up Double Fine

It's a puzzle game.

With lots of fun gameplay elements.

That are fun.

How would adding voice make it more "fun"? Sure it might help keep your attention if you're one of those people who needs stuff read to them on every game but it's doesn't add more "fun" to the game.

Just bought it and had my sister solve her way through the first chapter. This is another one of those perfect games to show off to a non/casual-gamer that will instantly click and win them over.

I'm guessing it's just as deep (or shallow depending on your outlook) as Costume Quest was, but the universe has a lot more context with the gameplay this time, making it intuitive without a prerequisite of knowing how games work.

The game did glitch on us though at the beginning (the guy with the gate key never appeared, and I had to reboot the level); but I'm still pretty happy with this game so far, and Double Fine's "small games" business plan in general.

Quoth the article:
"(As long as we're at it, Double Fine, as much as I loved Stacking's silent movie presentation and terrific score, could we please have fully voiced characters next time?)"

Voice acting in games is almost always a lost cause, outside of the most triple-AAA titles. (And even some of those games have horrific voice acting too.)

I'd much, much, MUCH rather have no voice acting and a fantastic score and atmosphere instead of the half-assed voice acting that ruins the atmosphere of too many games.

Well, no, because they shifted money from other aspects of the game to fund voices that I was going to turn off anyway. The voiceover process is way more expensive than people think.

If voice acting is that much of a draw on resources, then I think it's a very wise decision to use those resources on other, more important parts of the game and cut out the talkytalk.

I kinda like reading, anyway. I think most people's brains have the capacity to think up voices that fit the characters perfectly, when they read their dialogue. They might not take advantage of that capacity, but it's there...

I completely agree. Suikoden Tierkreis was ruined by the voice acting. They literally made the voice actors speak quickly to save space. All the characters sounded like they were all dope up on 5kg of candy.

Shadow Complex had acceptable voice acting, and it was far from a AAA game budget wise. It's not like they need to add voice to the whole game. They could have just done the cut scenes. A narrator for the story and game play explanation would have done wonders for this game.

I don't even mind reading normally, but for some reason (In the demo at least) I got really bored during the silent movie/cut scene parts.

Loved what I've played so far. There's a sort of Victoriana-style LittleBigPlanet vibe to the visuals that it massively appealing.
Double-Fine's games have always struck me a bit as great concepts with dodgy implementation. This one feels like they got it just right.

I see a lot of people saying how fun this game is. But is it lengthy enough for the $15 price tag? Only $15 games I've got are Shadow Complex (lots of time put into that with replays and collecting) and Comic Jumper (The price is a little high but the game was worth some good laughs and I love Twisted Pixel)

The length of the game is all in how much time you want to invest in it. Sure you can fairly quickly work through the required story puzzles and move to the next scene. But DF has added enough replay by giving you 4-5 different ways to solve each puzzle that are unique and create that they are all worth trying to solve. Some of the Hi-Jinks feel like busy work, but overall the game has a perfect "length" (that's what she said?) for $15.

Thanks for the info. Sounds pretty good. I'll at least try the trial and see what all the buzz is about. But if I do like it, I almost have enough bing rewards points to get 400MSP. So in a week I could get it for $10 rather than $15.

I love this game. My only complaint thus far (I just got done with the boat) is the movement. Walking around feels a little loose.

I actually welcome the reading in games like this. I always imagine the voices a certain way and it makes the characters more personal than a crappy voice actor usually achieves.

Pick this game up!
