The iControlPad -- a peripheral we first learned about in 2008 -- is still alive, kicking, and ready to be ordered for $74.99 before its initial February 16 ship date.
The device attaches a simple Bluetooth game pad to your smartphone of choice using various clamps, which currently support iPhones, Blackberry Touch, HTC Dream, T-Mobile G1 and a handful of other devices. It's designed to make emulators on jailbroken phones much easier to play -- though the official site for the iControlPad admits, "software for your phone may be thin on the ground at first, and we encourage you to ask your favorite developers to support it." Also, being forced to de-clamp your phone to receive a call is going to be the nerdiest thing you've ever done in public. Buyer beware!

That is already one of those kl things you want, but never get round to buying, or using if you do buy lol

That's actually cool. Unlike the sticky pads that go on the screen. Apple should really consider releasing a peripheral for the Iphone.

that's ok,... i think i'll just wait for something that will likely have plenty of developer/software support at launch,..... like the sony xperia play.

But dont we use bluetooth headsets to avoid having to take our phones out of controller docs? Anyway If you have a phone you aernt willing to trade just to get the experia play this isnt bad, the problem is waiting for developers to latch onto this idea and code in the new controls.
I remember hearing this thing extended the battery life on phones, but I forgot if that was before or after Apple started suing people for using their connector plugs.

Yeah you are right on, the developers are the issue.

If it wasn't 75 bucks, maybe if it was like...19.99 at most then, it'd be nice.
75 bucks is like buying Marvel VS Capcom 3 Special Edition.
So guys, what do you want. MvC3 SE or, an iPhone Peripheral for 75 bucks.

To expensive O_O I also think it could look better. Instead of the bottom could have the D-PAD and button to the side with a section below that has the joysticks. It would probably make it as big as the PSP instead of the side of an open DS.
Hopefully you can indeed use a bluetooth headset along with this for answering calls.

People still take phone calls?

For such an expensive little peripheral, it sure does look like it's made of cheap plastic. As cool of an idea this is, I'm not willing to fork over anything for it, especially since you really need official support for it to run on official apps for iPhone. Which is a shame, cause to be honest, some shooters on the iPhone suck control-wise unless they use the gyro-sensor for aiming.

When I read iControlPad for the first time, I though it was for the iPad and I said "sh!t that thing is going to be large o.O"

Really expensive to just kill one of the most advantages of a touch screen (I mean, the custom positions of every button and blah blah)?
If you bought an iPhone and this one... why not get directly a PSP AND a DS? you will pay about the same price...
...ah, ok, it's a phone... really, how many people remember this part of the features? I doubt it's the last thing mentioned...
"...oh, and you can make calls!"

Is that price a typo? Who in their right mind would pay that much for an iphone control pad? That is insane.

What is up with that button layout? Why, hardware designers, why must you so often use the same naming scheme for the same 4 button layout but in a different order!?
Not that it matters for this particular piece of hardware (seeing as how most games using it will have been programmed for different controllers anyway) but the whole thing is absolutely ridiculous.

That thing is hideous. Plus, it's too bulky because it doesn't slide or fold up. It's for reasons like this that the Xperia Play was created.

The design is horrible and it's way 2 expensive, they should have done some programming magic to make the thing compatible with all iphone games.
Hopefully apple will just release a real (sleek) controller add-on - that way devs will support it.

Hey look, playing games on an iPhone just became worthwhile! Wait... Apple didn't make this... it's 3rd Party? Good luck getting Devs to support it. If Apple makes one... sign me up!

Hey those buttons look familiar ,like their from the Xbox controller . come on apple or whoever made this crap, if Sony created their own button scheme as did MS for their controller . think you folk are capable of some letter button combo.

Is it really that big? The site shows something different looking, like you piece it together depending on the phone. It's too expensive too. But it would be kinda cool. Apparently somebody is developing an app to ensure maximum compatibility but you need to jailbreak to use it.
I agree that apple should try and come up with something official. Call me old fashioned, but touch controls are frustrating. People praise the gameloft FPSs for the gyro control but even after 30 mins I still can't stand it.
I will say this, touch works very well with turn-based RPGs. The FF games make me wish they would re-issue FF6 with that style of control. No more navigating menus, you wanna heal somebody you just select the appropriate item or spell and touch them.

Ehh.. that I know of on iPhone, we only have snes/nes emus that support bluetooth and they don't run that well. NES does I suppose, but snes is pretty choppy because they haven't been updated in a while.
I don't see how this would make the experience any better for iOS, nothing supports it..
..Or am I missing something? Not going to sell well for iPhone, and the business pitch is pretty poor. "Go bug your developers!" No, you go get some support that makes me want to shell $70
