'World of StarCraft' mod reborn as 'StarCraft Universe'
20
Ryan Winzen's dream of using the StarCraft 2 mod tools to create his own full-fledged MMORPG wasn't crushed by Blizzard -- rather, it was only renamed. Winzen's "World of StarCraft" mod, which saw its video demos pulled from YouTube by Blizzard (citing copyright violations), is now known by a much less infringing title: "StarCraft Universe." (We just hope the Lego Universe folks don't take umbrage with the new moniker. Yeesh.)
It seems the modders that are working on StarCraft Universe with Winzen have also adopted a much more realistic set of goals to go along with the new name. For instance, they're adhering to the 12-player cap that's applied to all other player-made StarCraft 2 mods. We guess that makes it just a "MORPG," now -- though that also sounds like the name of some kind of exotic alien species. But hey, that's kind of appropriate too!

I don't understand why we're hearing about this. Has the mod been released, or was there a milestone, or something? I don't know, do modders even use milestones? I'm not questioning the quality of the information... but just... why?

Because it was a controversy.
And now the controversy is over and everyone's happy at how it turned out.

@Alexisonfire But... but, we already knew how it was turning out. The name change was settled, what, almost a month ago? I'm so confused. Did they ''officially decide" on the name today? The source article on TechSpot is equally ambiguous, except it seems that they (Techspot) just felt like running a little story on StarCraft Universe.

Okay, so, the name (StarCraft Universe) was officially decided on Jan. 24th, about two weeks ago.
/shrug
I'm still at a loss. :(

Really, it makes more sense. I mean, it's not like Starcraft takes place on one world. Blizzard was just fact checking.
It's as if it was Blizzard was the guy wearing the red shirt this time...

Universe makes sense, after all, StarCraft is in space

@RedFishFire Forget Lego Universe, they just better hope MGM doesn't sue for infringing on their StarGATE Universe IP.
But what do I know, they're nothing alike, it's not like they have military personnel in space, alien gates that warp people to strange planets, rapidly replicating bug-like species...-
aw crap.

Hey, as long as this eventually comes out and Blizzard won't ban it or whatever, I'm all for whatever they call it. I just want to be able to hop on this with a few of my friends and just mess around. The map editor is simply fantastic and I'm loving what people are doing with it

MORPG ('moar-paj') - 1. A multi-player role playing game not massive enough to be a MMORPG. 2. An alien species created by the evil biologist from the past Dr. McElroy.

Love this story. It's incredible to see a company such as Blizzard realizing and respecting the talent in its fanbase.

This is a good example of how to put talents in good use. Instead of crushing fan projects or slapping them with DMCA/ C&D's, the idea and effort should be welcomed and considered. Congrats to Winzen and kudos to Blizzard as well.

They should try and set it up like how Phantasy Star Online was back in the day.
Have a server you pick, then you're in some generic lobby where you can setup for a quest, then you select a quest and then everyone gets teleported to a dungeon.
It could be just like that but with Zurgs.
