My guess this is being done so people can figure out what the heck Impulse is.

Methinks Steam's marketplace is about to get much more crowded.

@Jack Kevorkian

Steam had it for $5 on Holidays' sale a year or two ago.

I fail to see how the intelligence fails on the CEO of these new companies.

"Steam is a huge success! We can make millions! Let's make our own digital distribution program!"

"We have to compete against Steam"

"So what? We'll beat them!"

"They have years behind them, millions of dollars in sales, household name recognition, and even some retail games still require it."

"And we'll still beat them! Full speed ahead with our own platform and DRM! Our spotty library, distribution problems, and invasive DRM will win!" (some digital distribution platforms bundle in additional DRM to the level of retail releases.)

Also, Mass Effect was $5 on Steam awhile back.

@Drakkenfyre
FYI: Stardock had their own digital distribution platform since before Steam existed.

@Drakkenfyre Wow you're an idiot, talking about things you know, quite literally, nothing about.

Impulse has been around for years and is owned by Stardock. It was meant to replace their extremely ancient Digital Distribution System, Stardock Central (which itself was a replacement for something. Stardock Central also only managed Stardock games).

Also Impulse is extremely anti-DRM (atleast on Stardock's games. Their DVD retail games come with literally NO DRM). Unlike steam, you don't have to have it running to run the game. This means that you can buy and install mass effect, AND THEN UNINSTALL IMPULSE.

The copy protection on Mass Effect is something EA made them put on there because Impulse itself isn't DRM (where as steam is). Also steam games, like Crysis and Ubisoft games, also have 3rd Party DRM.

Impulse is good. Will it replace steam? No. Is competition healthy? Yes!

Wow, you fail to see generalizations.

Did you see my note at the end stating some platforms use terrible DRM? I didn't say THIS one did, I said some. You missed the generalization. One particular digitial distribution system uses almost outright spyware on your system. Again, generalizations.

It seems every month there is a new startup thinking they can challenge Steam. The closest one that can come close to even 1% of what Steam has done is Games for Windows Live, and even that has some serious critics.

@Drakkenfyre

So an article about Impulse is reason enough to attack random digital distribution platforms that no one (including yourself) have mentioned?

Maybe if you had actually named which platform you were going after people wouldn't (correctly) assume you were talking about Impulse, which is the focus of the article.

@Drakkenfyre Then you should specifically note that you're not including impulse. Especially when starting your post by referring to "these" companies, you're basically explicitly stating that Impulse is in the group.

See, it's not just me that sees what an idiot troll you are. I *ALMOST* felt the need not to chime in about how flimsy your attack on Impulse was, if you didn't do such a damn good job of already making a fool of yourself. You rant for rant's sake, even when (as you just admitted) it has extremely little correlation to the posted article. Kudos for being such a tool.

There's some irony in a troll calling someone else a troll.

The guy who liked to follow me around and make comments no matter what they were about. I thought you had finally given up commenting on my comments.

@Drakkenfyre

You're an idiot, I can't follow you around a site. I've been posting here since 2005. Sorry for your disillusions that I'm here for you. I just can't help that if you feel the need to express your ignorance on EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE. If you post on 100% of the articles, yes I'm going to comment on the same ones. And as much as you love to represent the ignorant, cynical, biased aspect of the gaming community, I enjoy being the one to bring logic and understanding to the table. So get over it, get over yourself. You're just another anon to me. If you posted under another name with the same ignorant bullshit, I'd probably still end up bumping into you and calling you out on it. Let's focus on what's important here. Several others called you out on being a naive troll clamoring for attention. Maybe it's time you stopped posting for awhile, or at least stopped commenting on articles highlighting awesome things like $5 epic games and trying to spin it negatively with baseless generic statements that don't apply to this situation.

@Drakkenfyre MAN what a stupid post. Stardock has existed for YEARS before Steam. These aren't any weekend warrior CEOs making a new startup every month to compete with the big dogs. If anything, it's Steam that's "challenging" Impulse.

Apparantly this post is screwed up, and won't let any replies go in, so if this one goes in, no, I don't comment on every story. You are making yourself look like a moron saying that.

"Several others called you out on being a naive troll clamoring for attention."

You mean the people who replied above? Just because they disagreed doesn't mean they agree with your statement.

How about you shut up and go back to posting on sports and music game posts?

Impulse sucks. Buy Dragon Age Collectors edition because I had a coupon from them, yay I think. Game launches. I have to wait for half a week for Impulse to sort their shit out before a lot of people can play the game. Issue is resolved. A week later I get a patching bug. I beat the game, hang it up. A month or two ago I want to replay it. Open up Impulse, hit patch PATCHING ERROR. NOPE.jpg. Long story short, I bought Dragon Age Ultimate on the Steam sale and when I enter through Ultimate I use my account that has CE so now I have every piece of DLC without dealing with the goddamn nightmare that is Impulse. Oh I bought the Sims Late Night expansion (for the fiance of course OF COURSE), the only reason being is because I knew I could add it to my EA account and download from there, all the while never touching Impulse again.

Also, their CEO is a bit of a douchebag and slightly off center.

For anyone who gets this game on PC, be sure to edit the ini to up the graphics. Maxing Anisotropy (AF) in there, for instance, makes a world of difference in texture quality. For some reason, the in game settings didn't max it out for me.

So, if the game is looking a little off to you, you can make it look better - like a PC game should. You just have to unfortunately mess around with the ini instead of just the in game settings.

Most digital distributors have this game for 5 bucks on and off, otherwise it's 10 bucks. Definitely worth the grab at either price point.

PC is grossly superior to the 360 version anyway. But yeah, Impulse is a day late and a dollar short. Steam has had ME1 on sale numerous times in the past year or two. A month before ME2's launch it was only like $3-5 bucks, that's when I grabbed my copy.
