If that 400MB is -excluding- the space used for the Gingerbread ROM it may as well be non-existent. My HTC Desire took up 350-400MB of memory just for Froyo. (I started off with 512MB and ended up with about 140MB after Froyo installation). Considering a lot of games and apps don't officially support SD card installation you'll be lucky to have 1 "full" game on your Xperia Play.

Major fail, Sony (N)

I understand Android phones have memory issues but Im pretty sure every Playstation game on the phone would have SD memory support.

I'm sure the Playstation Suite software will allow it. That said, the Playstation Suite isn't coming out with the Xperia phone... it releases later.
TheTjalian may have a really good point.

@KinseySS You'd think this, but well, I don't see it being a requirement anywhere just yet.

I'm pretty stoked for the Xperia Play, but finding out it only has a 1Ghz processor (which, well, will be outdated fairly soon, if not already) and a mere 400MB of RAM (when other phones like the Galaxy S support a minimum of 8GB) is a pretty weak showing to be honest. I was expecting more from that from a company who always loves to show off it's technical prowess.

My phone has 256k of internal memory, it can hold more than 100 SMS and 2 MMS, it has Voice Mail and can get into the internet Via WAP. It also has an extreme VGA camera that I can take pictures and send them to my friends anywhere I want, but only if their phones are as fancy as mine and can receive MMS too.

Suckers.

Boohoo I make a legitimate complaint about a product I'm looking forward too and all of a sudden I'm a bad guy

Apps2SD are only compatible with apps that support it, which, once again, hasn't been listed as a requirement yet for PS Suite apps.

TheTjalian makes an extremely valid point. The vast majority of applications have not been updated to support installation to the SD card.
400mbs will be wittled down extremely quickly once people go about setting up the phone to suit their preferences. Especially if Sony uses some form of GUI over vanilla android like HTC and Motorola do.

Sonys store will most likely only let you download stuff if you have an SD card therefore storing PS1 games (some of which are over 400mb) and any other games on the SD card.

It wasnt that you made a legitimate point.

It was that you started a statement with "IF" and then ended it with "Major Fail" without confirmation on that IF.

That made it a trolling comment.

@Cavall Well to be fair, 400MB either way is a major fail. If SCE is looking to bring "full portable games" (for a lack of a better expression) to Android then these games are going to take up a lot of space. Considering even some PSP games by themselves took up more then 400MB, I really don't feel it's enough space.

@eNriqeu What? The lowest-tier Galaxy S phone has 8GB, how does stating this make me a troll? My point (okay, perhaps I didn't make it entirely clear) is that if a non-dedicated-gaming phone has 8GB for a variety of apps, then a gaming phone (who's apps will predominately consist of large game sizes) should also have something like this.

The other thing is that the PSP Go, which was also a digital-distribution only handheld device, had a whopping 16GB of space built in and you could run any app off the memory stick guaranteed. The Xperia Play (another DD-based handheld), which doesn't have this guarantee, has 1/40th of the space.

Now if I'm a troll for pointing out bloody common sense, then I apologise for being a troll. But, somehow, I don't think I am.

If their update strategy is anything like the PSP or PS3 then we won't have to worry about getting regular updates.

Very nice.

This is definitely 'phone' gaming I can get behind. With actual buttons, and real games.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze

The iPhone has real games. It also has games best suited to touch screen controls.

Chaos Rings is a fully fleshed out game and works great with touchscreen controls.
Angry Birds is addictive (though not "full fat") and works great with touchscreen.
Super Monkey Ball
Tilt to Live
Monkey Island 1+2 (before the PS3 even had them)
I hate touchscreen overlay buttons but FF 1+2, Zenonia, SF IV, MK3 work surprisingly well.
I could go on...

Monkey island is a point and click game of cause its going to be well suited for a touch screen all you ever do is click.

Angry birds doesn't have controls, it has one control, dragging your finger.

Tilt to live you tilt the phone.

So, Xperia Play, PSP and NGP will all be available at some point alongside each other. A lot of Sony portableness.

@Hong Dong Well to be fair, the PSP will be fazed out. Then You will just have the XP and the NGP, which cater to 2 different demographics. The NGP will be for the younger crowd that just wants the best dedicated portable game system available. The XP will be for the older crowd that still wants to game on the go, but doesn't want to have to carry a second device.

Great looking device. I feel though it should have come with a little more storage space out of the box considering its meant for the buyer to build a library of games.

I think I'm more excited for this than the 3DS or NGP...I know that may sound odd (or make me sound old), but I *really* hate touch screens. Finally someone is smart enough to incorporate a real-life controller on a gaming phone!

Now if only they'd bring this to sprint... =/

@mcnerven Yeah, very excited but waiting to see if it makes the move to Sprint as well. I switched to Sprint from Verizon 3 years ago and don't want to go back. It doesn't look like it will support 4G but I've been pretty disappointed with Sprint's WiMax network anyway (poor building penetration in my experience).

I'm genuinely excited for this thing. If it could handle some form of video out (perhaps through DLNA), this could be the first complete all-in-one handheld where complete means it can perform all of the functions of any handheld device and act as a low power pc or console.

Add the big dose of money OnLive just got from HTC for phone development and this has huge potential. I have an OnLive micro console and, while it admittedly needs some control tweaks and a much more robust library, it's pretty impressive. $99 plus a free $50 game made it worth the experiment.

I think most people miss the point of this phone. Forget the playstation branding and look at what it has. Its a phone that has android which has alot of emulators in the market. Its got hardware controls, and its got pretty good specs. This is THE GAMING PHONE FOR ANDROID. The playstation part is all bonus, but anyone who has played any emulator on android knows how useful this phone can be.

Too bad Qualcomm just announced a new, scalable, 2.5GHZ Snapdragon CPU, today. And they also announced dual and quad core CPU's in the near future.

So basically, in 5 months, your phone will be totally obsolete! Same with your laptop!
