Did anyone see anything new offered to the table here? I think what makes gaming on the go popular are ones that offer simple and intuitive game play (i.e. Angry Birds, Tilt to Live, Cut the Rope, etc.) This is just a PS1 packed into a phone. I think Sony is completely missing the mark with this. Warrant it's cool but impractical.

?

It'll still have access to the android marketplace and those "games" so I fail to see your point at all. Sony is just offering a legitimate way to play REAL games with a controller set up. Also I'm sure they're aware of the PS emulator...so they want that market too.

All I ask is that PS+ translate to this, my free PS1 games would look and play awesome on this thing. Don't you agree?

@Scotty96 My point is, that this is clearly marketed to a specific demographic. I imagine most of which already have smart phones. Whats the appeal of trading in my iPhone or Android and getting a phone that flips open analog controllers to play old PS1 games? When is this practical? Waiting in line-ups? In the waiting room? At work? At home even? If you still have access to Android's marketplace then why would you trade in your old phone for this, unless your a Sony fanboy?

In the mean time there is also a PSP and an NGP coming soon to the market on top of their PS3, so access to REAL games is already in abundance. Very ambitious of Sony, but I just don't understand it.

I do agree that your PS1 games may look good on this phone, but does a large majority of the market still play PS1? Is that really your only deciding factor? I'm sure the answer is, Yes there is a large market that still does, but is it enough to make it profitable? Because don't forget, that's ultimately what this is about. Making money.

It's kinda like my phone and my PSP had a baby, and then I only had to carry one device around.

@ddealss Some of iPhone's most successful games are "real" games and not Angry Birds. Games from EA, Capcom and Gameloft such as their Zelda, Uncharted, Halo and COD knockoffs.

The biggest complaints with those titles are the controls or that controlling them requires covering half the screen.

This is a good idea.

Hmm so I could have a phone that can only access the android market place.

Or I could have a phone that could access the android market place and sony's PS1 + others market place.

How exactly is it a silly idea?

I think there is a market for it. I got the Moto droid and love it. Also have the SNES and NES emulators on it, love playing Chrono trigger, Punch Out, and more but the touch controls suck, as does using the qwerty. So i'd gladly trade in my QWERY slide out for the slide out controller on this, everything else is gonna stay the same as the phone I have now just it will be better for gaming.

As for the games, I don't need PS1 games but its a nice plus but I think the slide out controller is the bigger draw for me at least. I'm to old to pull out a DS or PSP at the doctors office or at work, but this thing would be my phone!

@ddealss Im definitely with u on this one. Though i cant quite put my finger on it, theres something off-putting about this ad and the demographic their going for. Girls dont want this, the general mobile phone market doesnt want this, but those are the ones in the ad. This is only for the hardcore and really, theyre just gunna hack it and put roms on it anyway....

@ddealss One could easily make the argument that casual games are most popular on phones simply because that's all they're really capable of. On both the NDS and PSP, longer form games are quite popular. There's no reason to believe that people wouldn't play those games on their phone if it was capable of it.

Ultimately, I think this is where the market is going; an all in one device that can perform all the jobs of any handheld, including games. Where the touch screen has proven itself to be quite capable of completely replacing a physical keyboard, the exact opposite has been true of game controls. Some types of games simply require physical controls. I fail to see how making a device that can accomplish that while running a common OS can be anything but a good thing. My only questions so far is that reports about the analog touchpads isn't very encouraging, what the price point will be and when I can have it on not-Verizon.

@Soc Absolutely. Most of these commenter's defending the device are exactly the demographic Sony is aiming for, and they're just defending their choice of buying it. I don't understand how Sony can expect this thing to be profitable unless it sells for dirt cheap. Alongside 2 other portable gaming machines at the same time? If they didn't recently announce the NGP co-existing alongside the PSP I wouldn't be so critical.

I was expecting a bit more power in this thing. It looks like it's playing DS games!

I'm curious but I think I'll be hanging on to my money for my 3DS and NGP purchases.

@Electrium yeah, me too.. i thought they would showcase new games with "wow factor" (like sony did on their NGP), but some of those games are already available for ios since 2009 and can run smoothly even on iphone 2g..

I think I'll save my money for NGP, not this one..

@Electrium Well they showed Dungeon Defenders which is one of the most demanding mobile games on the market today. Other games are PS1 titiles, others shown were Gameloft games which are above DS but below PSP quality.

It varies - games for this thing are from a bunch of sources and levels of quality from PS1 to top of the line Android games to simpler Android games.

@Electrium You must not have played allot of DS games then if you say something like this. The DS has way worse looks than this device. This is a normal phone, but just has physical controlls. This is not a gaming machine.

@(Unverified) No, I have definitely played a lot of DS games. Here, let me list off the DS games I've played this week alone: Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, Pokemon Diamond, Pokemon Soul Silver. Like I said early, I was just *expecting* it would be more powerful. Or it's also possible these games aren't pushing the device very hard.

This isn't a replacement for the 3DS or PSP2, it's a phone that can play games and has a slide out controller. So instead of saying i'm going to save my money for a 3DS, people need to be like i'm going to get the DROID X or the EVO instead of the Xperia Play...and why would you do that if your a gamer?

Anyone else think the games looked kinda janky? The psp looks better than this stuff IMO.

I wish I understood the audience for this, but I don't. real gamers are going to want more (3ds/ngp), and casual, cell phone gamers are going to want less (straight up android/ios).

@Electrium

Ha ha, i singed just for you :P

Ps1 games shouldnt even use 1/5 of the power of this device.
Lets give you a comparansion (i dont remember exchat numbers)

Xperia play:
-Processor. 1 ghz
-RAM. 512mb
-GPU. dual core, other is 1.5 ghz and other is 1.6 ghz. No clue about VRAM.

NDS:
-Processor. ~33mhz (For GBA.) And ~66mhz
-RAM. 4mb
-GPU. None

Basicly my Nokia N81 8GB is comparable to DS.(i would say more powerfull but want to avoid teh flame)

3Ds:
-processor. 200Mhz cpu (can be overclocked at 400mhz)
-RAM. Not confirmed i think.
-GPU. something at 400mhz.

So for me. Physical gaming keys and quite good hardware with decent price this is very apealing :)

I heard that price is the same as other xperia phones, and they are ranged between 230-470 euros. So its quite safe to say its ~about~ 350 euros.

Also android platform, hardware it has + indie community.... There will be some great FREE games on it, if PSP homebrew developers decide to start making games on it.
