In late 2008, EA released two new intellectual properties; while both failed to break sales records the world over, they went a long way towards proving to the world that EA was serious about changing its image. The more successful of the two games just saw a sequel released: Dead Space 2 opened to strong reviews and is outselling its predecessor two to one. The other game, however, hasn't had such an easy time of things. According to a Press 2 Play TV report – translated by Eurogamer – "EA was shown a prototype" of a Mirror's Edge sequel but "declined" to pursue it, ostensibly opting to focus all of developer DICE's efforts on the upcoming Battlefield 3, as previously reported.
Nearly two years ago, EA's Patrick Soderlund said, "You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure. It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I'm excited about what we do." While Soderlund could have been talking about EA Mobile's better-than-it-should-be Mirror's Edge for iOS, the name Mirror's Edge 2 popped up on a DICE lighting artist's portfolio a few month's later. EA CEO John Riccitiello even said "it's a game that deserves to come back," and we don't think he was referring to mobile.
So has Mirror's Edge 2 been rejected by EA? We'll have to wait for EA to get back to us before we know anything for sure but, if it has, we just wanted to say thanks, EA. For breaking our hearts. On Valentine's Day.
[Update 3:05pm:An EA spokesperson got back to us with this: "Mirror's Edge is an important franchise built by the DICE studio in Stockholm. DICE is currently producing Battlefield 3. Nothing further to announce." With just one full title under that name, and the aforementioned mobile game, franchise sounds like an awfully strong word for Mirror's Edge. With that in mind, we'll try to keep our hopes up.]

Now this is something i don´t really understand, everybody wants mirror´s edge 2, but few bought the first one??? i know the same happened with dead space. But it still sounds so funny that a game that did poorly has so many people asking for it, even though they didn´t buy it......

The biggest seller for Mirror's Edge was word-of-mouth. A lot of people bought it used, rented it, got it from a friend, etc. and enjoyed it. Those people would be likely to buy the sequel new.
How many gamers do you know that haven't played Okami? Now how many people actually bought the game when it came out?

It's called a vocal minority. Sure there's a following, it was very different from the usual FPS fair, but it was difficult to get into and the design felt inconsistent in a few areas. It does deserve to com back but they have to seriously figure out what they were inconsistent about because I'm not sure they even understand.

Raised my eyebrows to this article, but it's only got me more excited for BF3.

I felt the same way, but I do really want Mirror's Edge 2. The article doesn't make it seem like it's not going to happen. Perhaps EA just didn't like the build that was presented or it's just on the afterburner until BF3 is released.

...despite that; I'd rather MIRROR'S EDGE as a stand-alone title than a half-assed sequel made by a new/different developer who won't give as much effort into producing a noteworthy 2nd adventure. Which happens all too often in media these days.

I don't either...after the horrible servers (gave up trying to play Onslaught entirely), constantly getting kicked off and losing progress, not being able to use my unlocked weapons for some unknown reason, the cheating, the lag, the watered down the single player game just for the multiplayer...finally had enough.

LAME.

i loved it. i just wish the PC version wasn't a bug riddled mess. at certain points it will inexplicably drop to below 10 frames per second when it had been running just fine at 60+ all the while. i wanted to play through it again the other day and then i remembered what a mess it was. i really really really want a sequel.

Mirror's Edge is one of the few titles in the past couple years that actually tried to innovate. What a disappointment that it doesn't get a chance to fix it's flaws with a sequel. Especially since games like Call of Duty gets a sequel every year. Just not fair.

@TraceurRyuk Prepping for LBP2 Any type of shooter = $$$? Really? People still think like that? The FPS genre might be over saturated, but let's face it, a large majority of them are terrible flops. Hour of Victory, Sniper: Ghost Warrior, Singularity (not necessarily bad but definitely not $$$), Timeshift, Wolfenstein, Turok, Conflict: Denied Ops, Legendary, Frontline, Darkest of Days, those are just off the top of my head too. Those games are nowhere near the same league as Battlefield 3, or any battlefield game, in terms of sales and certainly in terms of quality.

Here's the thing about them though. They had virtually no advertising. Maybe with the exception of Timeshift, but that was even before Call of Duty 4 when FPS really hit their stride. And I think just general war games tend to be more popular than Sci-fi shooters.

@TraceurRyuk Prepping for LBP2 In addition to having almost no advertising, they were almost all universally terrible, in both critical and popular opinion. They were also all released, with the exception of timeshift, after CoD 4, so they theoretically should have been able to ride the wave of FPS' hitting there stride. (But really, FPS' hit their stride with CoD 4? Not CoD2? 1? Halo CE? Medal of Honor 1? Battlefield 1?)
