Variety reports that when the '80s hit Voltron relaunches on the airwaves later this year in the form of Voltron Force, there will be video games on shelves to herald its arrival. According to the article, the titles will be published by THQ, which has secured the exclusive ability to do so from rights holder World Events Productions.
No further details were divulged, such as which developer (or developers) will be in charged of translating the cartoon -- which features a five-person team piloting robotic lions that combine to form the titular mega-robot -- into something we can actually play. We've contacted THQ for comment and will update when we hear back.

It better have 5-player co-op, where each player forms a different part of Voltron.

Pack hunting as a pride of robotic lions = cool.
1 players handling the fighting while the other 4 handle minigames to keep shields, energy, EMCON up, etc,... = kinda/maybe cool.
tripping over yourselves as each person tries to control one limb a peice at the same time = not cool.

Oh wow, 5 players each controlling a limb would make for hilarious gameplay as we stumble around trying not to cut ourselves in half with the blazing sword. Imagine something like Remote Control Dandy (or the PS2 game RAD: Robot Alchemic Drive, but each person pressing a button to move their limb and the leader activates weapons).

Long ago...
From the farthest regions of the universe.
Comes, a legend.
The legend of....
VOLTRON
Defender of the Universe.
A mighty robot.
Loved by good, feared by evil.
As Voltron's legend grew
Peace settled across the galaxy
On Planet earth, a galaxy alliance was formed.
Together with the GOOD planets of the solar system,
They maintained peace, throughout the universe.
Until, a new horrible menace threatened the galaxy.
Voltron was needed once more.
This, is the story of the super force of space explorers,
Specially trained and sent by the alliance to bring back..
VOLTRON, DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE!

Wait, they're reviving Voltron? Is the new version going to be made by the Americans or the Japanese?
And on a tangentially related topic, will a Voltron revival finally spur Adult Swim to put out another season of Titan Maximum?

I'll be showing my age here (20) but I've never seen anything Voltron related. I think the Power Rangers were the Voltron of my generation. So not too excited about this. Power Rangers on the other hand...

As someone who grew up with the original Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, and Voltron, there is no part of this news that isn't awesome. Loving the 80's cartoon reboots.

Street Sharks > Ninja Turtles
Bruce Lee > Chuck Norris

I hadn't even heard about the new TV series, despite being an active Voltron community member--well, ten years ago. Thanks for the heads-up, Joystiq! My Toynami die-cast lion set is already standing at the ready for . . . being admired by onlookers, as usual.
