Darn! I just missed it!

...sorry. If not me, then 37 other people are going to point it out, though.

Interactive digital experiences, including all games, are an evolution in art which stretches into new dimensions of non-linearity, interactivity and immersion. The only reason I can think of for there to even be a question is that people cling to definitions of art which come from history, at which time these things didn't exist.

Anything by Final Fantasy's Amano or Castevania's Ayami Kojima.
Any painted art made for WoW is usually amazing.

Fr this generation:

BioShock, without a doubt-- be there. Do I need to explain, in 2011, why this should be on display?

Portal-- the writing, environments and world, and the mind-bending gameplay are revolutionary.

Mass Effect series-- epic storytelling at its best.

Bethesda's Fallout-- a couple years ago I was blown away by how unique, believable, and expansive this post-apocalyptic world was.

Assassin's Creed series-- a number of original and sweet ideas here. And the recent multiplayer should absolutely be labeled as revolutionary.

Metal Gear Solid 4-- I had to pick up my brain matter after that one. So spectacular.

Uncharted series-- responsive controls, that feeling danger, adventure, action-- exhilarating.

Halo series-- I remember Ludwig said something in the podcast about the Halo series that I should have recognized a long time ago-- Halo makes you FEEL like you have a body, you feel super.

Mario Galaxy games-- The Mario series continues to beat on the nostalgia pulse with it's vibrant style. That alone owes it a place on the wall-- and oh--the platforming is as marvelous as ever.

Mirror's Edge-- The fact that people felt motion-sickness means that a game is effective-- and it was sure was, inn many awesome ways.

There are plenty more, friends, that all deserve attention. We should know what most of those are.

So... The PS1 era adventure games include: A 16 bit Sega CD remake. A Sega Saturn port that wasn't good enough to make the Saturn list itself. Final Fantasy 7. These list were made by people that had no clue what they were listing... Diablo 2 is a PC shooter now btw.

I think the biggest conflict on there was Earthbound vs Chrono Trigger vs Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I ended up picking Earthbound because I played that game so many times I can remember EVERYTHING in that game and is the only one I go back to over and over.

@Draugdraugr

The lamest part is how some people will treat this as a 'what i liked most of the 3 games i have to choose from,' instead of, "what do I consider has the most artistic merit/innovation in this section."

There is a lack of Carmack games on here, especially the beginning. Not to meantion they also left out the good SSI, Interplay, and Sierra online games. No Kings Quest or Eye of the Beholder mention? ; ;

@Draugdraugr Well whos to say thats not what people should do? Games arent just art based on their looks, since they are interactive people can choose what games effected them most, story wise or other gameplay elements. If a game has a great story or gameplay but a crappy art style its still art.

The Smithsonian?

"Remember, this is an art exhibition, so be sure to vote for games that you think are visually spectacular or boast innovative design!"

How can this be any more clear?

He didn't recant what he said so much as puss out and say something to the effect of, "I'm an old man who's never played a video game but I'm willing to misrepresent them to my huge audience. I won't say anything else as long as you morons stop sending me hate mail. Deal?"

That's still different than:

"I was wrong. I honestly don't know what caused me to write about something that I know nothing about."

He's just apologizing because he got caught.

1: Video games as a form of art has had a greater impact on modern society than many other forms of art (think GTA).

2: Video games through my youth and to this day have moved me (at times to tears), and forced me to reflect upon myself in some way.
Both these are good reasons to consider games as art.
And now for my nominations

1: Halo- forerunner to the modern FPS, and the first to incorperate many of todays most common mechanics
2: Super Mario 64-first and one of the greatest of it's era, and the best (in my humble opinion) of the Mario franchise
3:Final Fantasy 7- one of the most popular, and best (opinion) of one of the worlds biggest and longest lasting franchises

I have my favorits, but I omit them here for objectivity. These are some of the most influential games that I have had the privlage to play.
