@Ezio Auditore da Firenze Yeah, I may get shady looks when I go to buy it, but some of the songs in the game are simply /amazing/ to listen to... A great example is EXEC_FLIP_ARPHAGE which is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWzpUBTp7O8

I'm the opposite. I find the wailing in the Revytails' songs are hilariously bad.

Still love the standard BGMs though.

That's...interesting. I've always found that, in general opinion at least, Hymmns are the main songs people like.

@thisredengine Yeah, if you can call songs that go from operatic performances to hard metal as "terribly bad wailings". It's fine if you don't like them, but I think that saying that is excessive, considering that they are the centerpiece of the saga in all aspects.

Apparently the best way to market an obscure game to the mainstream is to confuse the hell out of them.

It may be a great game but the title will turn people away.

I think they know that most of the sales will be from their super hardcore fanbase. Which is a strange business tactic, considering all companies should strive to get sales from as many people as possible...

I'm sure if the Final Fantasy series invested in subtitles they'd be just as ridiculous and confusing.

I expect JRPG's to do this; it's like a tradition.

Actually, after looking at it for a while, I noticed that "Ar Tonelico" is an anagram of "relocation.

I don't know if that was intended, but I'm just throwing that out there.

The JRPG world is just completely out of ideas. Using a thesaurus is the next best way of doing things.

Given that it's in a made-up language, you'll have a hell of a time finding those words in a thesaurus.

When did JRPGs started to come up with these increasingly stupid names?

Back in the day, they were very straighfoward: Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Wild Arms, Breath of Fire, Valkyrie Profile, Dragon Quest.

Today it looks that weirder/nonsencical the name the more JRPGs fans will grab on to.

@TheOtherJames

uh...

Chrono = time (largely known as Cronos, titan of time, or cronometer), trigger = trigger.

Valkyrie, well, a valkyria. Profile, her personal life.

Are you really comparing this to Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel or Fabula Nova Crystallis or whatever random name?

@Barry Burton

I believe "Chrono" wouldn't be usually associated to "time" by the typical consumer.

Nonetheless, I think it's pretty hilarious that you say "random name" when reffering to Ar tonelico, moreover when the article you're commenting on provides an explaination of what the title actually means.

And, before you say anything, it even mentions that "Qoga" and "Ar Ciel" are both Hymmnos, which is basically a made-up, cohesive language.

Um... out of all the titles you mentioned, "Secret of Mana" and "Breath of Fire" are the only ones that actually make some degree of grammatical and contextual sense.

I actually really love the lore and world of Ar Tonelico, so I appreciate the explanation.

Too bad they created all this background material for a game that centers around stripping girls and sexual innuendo.

@Kevadu I'd say the sexual innuendos and the light-hearted nature of the games are part of the charm, I still remember when I first visited an Ar tonelico fan forum, and was blown away with the lore, which made everything more hilarious.

I mean, remembering Aurica's innuendo scene and then finding out that there was a WHOLE TERMINOLOGY AND A THEORY ABOUT IT, was simply hilarious.

It's kind of amusing that they're going on about being 'accurate' and not changing names etc, yet the title of the game is very different from the Japanese (where the subtitle was a long string that basically translates to 'the girl's song that triggers the end of the world').

As long as their translation isn't as utterly terrible as Ar Tonelico II, I don't really care what the title of the game is.
