Konami has announced a new Professor Layt -- oh sorry, that's something else. Nope, this is Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights, a new game for the 3DS about a French archaeologist that has nothing to do with any series by Level-5 for Nintendo handhelds. It features Dr. Lautrec and his young assistant, Sophie, exploring 19th century Paris while solving puzzles and deciphering riddles, some of which will take advantage of the 3DS' extra displayed dimension.
The game also has a four-player Treasure Hunt mode to go along with a story that pits Lautrec and Sophie against the Knights of the Iron Mask, a shadowy group which will stop at nothing to hide the secrets of the Mask of Mirac -- no wait, that's something else again. At any rate, the game is due out sometime this summer, and until then you can check the screenshots below for any similarities to other 3DS titles.

This is the most flagrant copycatting I've seen since Digimon dropped.

I'm not a huge fan of Digimon, but let me educate you. Pokemon and Digimon were in development almost against each other, and thier overall concept may be similar in the "use monster against monster" fashion, but that's as far as it goes. Digimon was originally more a knock off of Tamagoshi's than Pokemon. With the explosion of Pokemon, the format changed more to that style of gameplay, but it still kept itself different enough to not be a flagrant copy.
Not that it stopped anyone from being ignorant.

@darkfocus
the only concept it borrowed is that the world is inhabited by monsters and they battled against each other... which isn't all that original to start with.

It really is pretty shameless. At least they could use a different aesthetic, ala Puzzle Agent.

But there's no hiding what they've clearly done. I think I...yeah, that's the vomit I just coughed up.

Meh... this one doesn't even have the visual charm that Layton stole from things like the French animated movies The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist.

Hmm... that makes me wonder, where did these movies steal this art style from?

Hayao Miyazaki sometimes has that European-influenced art-style. Some beautiful art, that is.

French animated movies often 'stole' the art style from French (/Belgian/etc) graphic novels (think Tintin, Asterix - but in France there are zillions more).
I'm sure these are translated into Japan too, so that's probably where they got it from originally. In the Layton games, the literal animation style [in the anime clips] seems pretty Japanese to me (Miyazaki-style) but there is a definite French influence too; Layton's car is basically a 2CV right? And those characters mentioned, and some of the background art.
Which is all a bit odd given that it's actually set in London.
That said I'm glad it isn't based on British comics because then it'd probably have to look like either Judge Dredd or Viz. Which, no offence to either, would not really make for a charming video game.

Brilliant man of title with a top hat, solving puzzles? Copied.
Young apprentice who's innocently demeanored but determined and smart? Copied.
At least the art styles are different. OH WAIT.

I wouldn't say knockoff, since Tamagotchi and Digimon are both from Bandai.

Wow, this is pathetic. It's such an obvious rip. It's one thing to borrow concepts of game play. It's another thing to borrow the whole game.

I'm totally excited about this game. After playing through 3 Laytons, I need something with a bit more variety. Level 5 is inviting the competition by totally failing to evolve their gameplay. The characters are great, and the stories are fun, but it's the same old puzzles.
This looks like it will have some fresh gameplay.

Who plays Layton for gameplay variety, frankly? Without counting side mini-games, you solve puzzles. You draw lines and circles, tap static objects and input words and numbers.

The guys name isnt even original. I bet its taken from the French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. You have probably seen at least one of his works you just dont know it.
