Bungie has issued a terse denial of reported contractor layoffs spurred by Activision, the studio's long-term publishing partner. One of the alleged contractors, who claimed to be "let go for no reason," detailed the supposed account to Kotaku Australia. "We were given no warning," the source said. "Bungie told our agencies that it was 'performance related,' but one of our fellow fired-employees was an IT contractor and showed us an email he received before his account was killed, citing 'project sensitivity' and 'budgetary concerns from our publisher.'"
Bungie refuted the claim, saying in a statement that the studio "has never been asked to lay off any employees or contract employees by our publisher, Activision-Blizzard, for any reason." Last May, Activision did confirm that it was funding the development costs of Bungie's multiplatform mystery project, which the publisher said would employ nearly 200 staff. Perhaps sensitive to the assumption that Activision maintains close operational oversight of spending for the project, Bungie found it necessary to so explicitly discredit the reported layoffs.
The post on Bungie.net was later updated, "To clarify, Bungie has not experienced layoffs or group firings of any kind." A link to the studio's current job openings was also included with the statement to emphasize that Bungie is actually still hiring.
Of course, the developer made no mention of the alleged contractor's other supposed revelation: that the project in question combines FPS and MMO elements (an FPSMMO, if you will) in a sci-fi setting, according to Kotaku's source, and will be named "Destiny" -- but codenamed "Tiger," for now. Neither title matches up with any of the recently discovered Bungie trademarks, but the MMO component does echo the hypothetical musings of Bungie creative director Joe Staten.
"Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?" Staten wondered aloud during a GDC Online panel discussion last fall. "Wow. That would be great."

Uhhhh... as much as errbody wants to hate Activision... wouldn't there be some kind of proof if this actually happened?
Anyway, MMOFPS could be cool.

No, it's just contracters. There's no need to say we fired hired contracts.
Also, Tabul Rasa was an MMOFPS and so was AA. However AA's name is slipping my mind right now.

so pathetic that people believe anything they read online, especially for an ex employee who is obviously mad and disgruntled... hating Activision is nothing new but people still act so surprised when they pull moves like this, and when the new COD drops they are the first in line at midnight buying this sh!t up, on top of that you (gamers) insult how many versions of GH there were and when Activision pulls the plug on the whole shabang you (gamers) are the first to fcuking RAAAGGEEE over it. so are they supposed to scrap GH like you want but keep the dozens of devs on payroll? it makes ZERO sense. What they did was effed up, no doubt about it, but its business and it happens EVERYWHERE, not just the gaming industry

Bungie will be wise to only partner with Activision and not get consumed by them.

A contractor can be fired for any reason other than discrimination so on so forth. They can even be fired for no reason at all. I don't see why he's even voicing losing his job when it's the norm for any contractor.

That's what I was thinking. It's nothing major, just part of being a contractor.

While this is only rumor, it's too bad to see bungie making another FPS, even if it is an MMO. They have so many non-FPS games that were great before they ever released halo, I figured since they parted with MS we'd finally get a chance to see that kind of stuff from them again.

i wouldn't say they had "so many" non-fps games. actually, only myth and oni come to mind. don't forget that they got their start making first-person shooters (marathon).
anyway, yeah, those games were great, but i'm really just looking forward to whatever they put out next, be it fps or otherwise.

To be fair, they had less FPS releases than other releases until the Halo series, I think like 3 FPS' and then 4 other games, of varied style, which have already been mentioned. This is what got my hopes up that they would try something new. I wasn't trying to say they never made FPS's before halo, heh.
Once again though this is all rumor so while its possible we don't really know what we'll see next from them. However, given how 'adventurous' people are in the market nowadays it probably is a safe assumption it is an FPS.

Juat have to correct you a bit here: they got started making minotaur, which was not a FPS, and they had another FPS, pathways into darkness, before marathon. The myth series was excellent. Oni was going to be great, but then they just rushed it out so they could go work for MS. But by and large they are a FPS dev. Doubt they will mix it up now, considering their success with halo. But would like to see them really innovate again...

In time, I'm sure Bungie will regret their decision to work with Activision. I mean, they only have a publishing deal and there's already rumors that Activision is giving them trouble. As much as I love Bungie, unless there's a change of management at Activision before this game comes out I don't think I'll be buying it.

Let me translate for you children. "Performance related" is adult-speak for "sucked at performing his job duties" so he got fired.
It surprises me that even the writers didn't point this out.

Yeah... let ME clarify something for YOU about the way the REAL adult world works...
"Performance based" means "this is all the excuse we need to give to fire anyone for any, or no, reason whatsoever." They don't have to back it up or explain it. It happens ALL THE TIME and very rarely has anything to do with actual performance. There is little-to-no security when you're an employee, and even less when you're stuck contracting.

2003: Planetside is released. Promising, though the tech isn't quite ready for it.
2003-2010: No MMOFPS for no apparent reason.
2010-Now: Tons of MMOFPS in development, from Dust 514 to Planetside Next.
I wonder what kicked this off? I'm hoping Planetside Next won't be crushed.

This is ridiculous rumor. Bungie is now a corporation owned and operated by its employees. Activision does not own them in any way, just a publishing deal (Think EA partners). Activision is not able to force Bungie to fire members of their team.

b. Bungie's next game is not going to be called Destiny
c. It will blow everyones mind!
