Update [2:30PM]: "Portal 2 does not include support for Sony's motion controller," Valve clarified in a press statement today, saying quotes in a German language PlayStation Blog interview that had indicated PlayStation Move integration was in the works had been "lost in translation." (See our original post after the break.)
Original post:
As if cross-platform Steam support (and a free Steam copy) wasn't "compensation" enough for Valve's previously shoddy PS3 support, Portal 2 will also include PlayStation Move support, according to Valve lead writer Chet Faliszek. In an interview on the German language PlayStation Blog, Faliszek was apologetic to PS3 owners for the Orange Box port that Valve "made the mistake of" letting an external team at EA develop. The port "didn't quite achieve the same quality level that we have at Valve," he understated, before reiterating that Valve has since established a dedicated, in-house PS3 team.
"As a small, remedial measure we have PS3-exclusive cloud storage [of saved games], a free code for [the PC/Mac version] and complete PlayStation Move support [in Portal 2]," Faliszek said (according to a translation), adding, "See it as compensation for Left 4 Dead" -- or, rather, the lack thereof on PS3.
Faliszek noted that Move is a "completely new experience" for the development team, and it's "not yet fully integrated" into the game -- perhaps a factor in the short delay of the game's release to April. The late addition of Move support runs contrary to statements made by Valve's Gabe Newell last fall when he joked with PSM3 that Move and 3D-display support would "have to wait for 'Portal 3' or another title. We won't be supporting those in Portal 2."
Faliszek confirmed that Valve is still not integrating 3D into Portal 2, which is already disorienting enough in 2D. "The levels are changing -- sometimes you stand on your head -- and then again the world seems to turn." It would be too difficult to accurately place portals in 3D, he added.
Finally, he acknowledged that it's "very difficult" to build console-specific mod tools, and user-generated content for Portal 2 will only be creatable on the PC. Given cross-platform compatibility, however, "we are working with Sony to find out a way to get the biggest and most important modifications and maps of PC users on the PS3." Faliszek noted that the mods could possibly be delivered as free DLC (via PSN) or through the Steam Play service itself. As for premium DLC, "we've got quite a lot of crazy ideas," Faliszek teased.

Never thought about it before, but Portal seems like a game that is made for 3D.
Posted: Feb 17th 2011 2:21PM Mike Sylvester said
@creid8 It's really not. Portal runs super-smooth with maxed out settings on the most modest of PC hardware, but enabling 3D on my GTX470 turns it into a slideshow. Every layer that's enabled for a portal has to be drawn twice in 3D mode. I have to drop it down to 2 portal layers to keep framerates at playable levels.

So there is no point in getting the 360 version, since there is no Kinect support or free code for the PC.

@Diebold None at all really. Makes the decision easy to pass up on the game.

@Diebold Well, Valve has made it very clear the PS3 version of Portal 2 will be the best one on either console. Gabe literally said that in the E3 Sony conference

I don't wana say it, but I mean it's not really cool to gimp one version just so the other will be better. By all means it's great that they're doing this as a kind of apology, and I'll definitely be buying the PS3 one now, but why can't the 360 owners get a free portal steam version? :[

@Ryuk Because MS doesn't allow Valve to integrate Steam on the XBox or to do free content updates. Basically just another moneygrab from MS.
And don't mistake it. Sony WOULD do the same, if they hadn't painted themselves in a corner. Losing the free and open nature of the PSN would be a MAJOR blow for the PS3 while this way it is a big push for it.
My hope is that they get sane and simply integrate the PSN friends list with steam. THAT would be awesome!

I dunno if Xbox users are being jerked around here. Move's functionality obviously fits the gameplay in Portal than Kinect ever could. And that's not a slam on Kinect, just a fact.
If Xbox users are shedding tears over this a copy of Left 4 Dead will more than soak up their tears. I just hope Valve can treat both platforms somewhat equality going forward. Orange Box on PS3 was horrific.

@Truant 360 peeps were jerked around on TF2 not as much on L4D. Although we got the same go fetch em song and dance from valve about nasty MS making them charge for updates on L4D...complete caca of course.
Valve and Epic I have very little respect for when it comes to telling the truth. I'd rather them just keep their mouths shut. But both of them love to be in the limelight too much.
I wouldnt be suprised if Gabe switches allegencies just to stroke his own ego by being in the press.
I sound mad dont I? lol, I swear I'm not :P

@Jack Kevorkian The only people that are "jerking" 360 owners is Microsoft. They're the ones preventing Valve from doing whatever they want (like free DLC and massive updates).
Eh, not that I care. I'm getting this on the PC, seeing as it's pretty much the only way to properly play Valve games.

Song and dance is what you call the truth now? Obviously Sony is getting this support because they're willing to play ball with integrating Steam. It's not Valve's fault that MS wants to own, certify, double certify, charge for, and triple certify everything.

TF2 for the XBox360 was already at the limit of the system's memory. All the additional stuff added since then would be impossible to add in. Loading up a map 3 times the size of the largest map at launch, then adding in about 100 extra items isn't happening.
Optimizations could be made, but add on to that the certification process Microsoft makes companies go thru. The estimated total was $55,000, and Microsoft would force them to charge every player for the updates, and Valve said no.

It's not MS's fault they wouldn't allow steam integration and wanted to charge for DLC and have a draconian certification process? Whatever you say there champ.
I guess this is one instance where the openess of psn works for the benefit of ps3 owners.

@Jack Kevorkian Ah, but how could we POSSIBLY argue with irrefutable evidence like "every time Valve opens their mouth, bullshit falls out". Yes, they deliberately go OUT of their way to deceive and lie to their audience, and Microsoft sure doesn't say deny anything when Valve says these so-called "lies".
The only bullshit coming out of anyone's mouth is yours. Come back and actually talk when you have more to say than "NO THEY LIE THEY SUCK AND YOU SUCK IF YOU DON'T THINK THEY LIE".

At this point I may as well just get this game for the hell of it. I wasn't necessarily planning to, but with such a huge list of features that keeps getting more and more crazy, buying it is basically the same as saying "this type of insanity is fine by me, so here's some cash."

I am a 360 gamer and as much as I loved Portal, all of this apparent dislike of the 360 platform that is starting is making me not want to get the game at all. I know my one purchase/not-purchase of the game won't make a difference to Valve but still. I would rather not get stupid early DLC for games like COD and just get the same features for games like this.

I'm strictly a console gamer, so I do not want a Steam PC copy even if it is free. Valve has said they are working with both Sony and Microsoft to deliver free DLC user created content from the PC mods. Microsoft allowed it to happen for Super Meat Boy, 'Teh Internets' delivers an unlimited amount of free DLC levels. So the versions of the game are so far the same. Except if you really want a free Steam PC copy of the game. I am highly intrigued by Move support, and may have to get both 360 and PS3 copies of the game. Valve deserves my monies.

@GordoJones88 The PC and PS3 versions will be far from the same. Firstly, the mod support that Valve will deliver to the PS3 will obviously not be every single mod that will appear for Portal 2. They will probably only feature the most popular and accessible mods. Needless to say, all those more obscure mods and total conversion ones will not be featured. And this goes without mentioning the fact that you can't actually mod the PS3 version yourself at all. I do appreciate the fact that Valve will be delivering mods to the PS3 version, but make no mistake--it's still a far cry from what will be possible on the PC version.
Not only that, but the PC version will be easily the best looking in terms of aesthetics without a doubt. The PC and PS3 versions will be nowhere near the same, even if the PS3 version will be impressively closer.
