Google is, apparently, a wonderful place to work, but its products have rarely afforded video game developers an opportunity to work for the company. Well, until now.
YouTube is seeking to build a "next generation game-console-based TV experience with YouTube video content," and is seeking programmers with "deep technical knowledge of Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and/or Nintendo Wii." Given the everyday stories of layoffs in our industry, there will be no dearth of qualified applicants.
Google currently offers a functional, but not particularly optimized, experience for Wii and PS3 via the consoles' internet browsers called YouTube XL (pictured above). Think you can make something better than this?

In my experience that YouTube XL is pretty awful, at least on my PS3 but the YouTube on the Apple TV is pretty good, i'd be very happy to see an advanced version of that on any system.

Why does Google not just help develop a console version of Chrome?
Then we dont need a special version of youtube.
The PS3 version of youtube (pictured) is horrible to use because it lacks about 80% of the features of youtube. I always click the link "Standard version" & browse the normal youtube. There are one or two things that dont work correctly, but its useable.
The problems are
a) the xbox 360 has no browser &
b) the PS3 browser is crap.

@commenter7
EDIT: I miss understood your comment,
It's not really that simple to just port a console version of Chrome.

@commenter7 yeah, I realise its probably not that simple but creating a segregated version of youtube just seems like the totally wrong direction when whats really needed is a decent browser for both consoles.
I mean if they go down that route then we need special version of youtube, then a special version of facebook, etc, etc.
PS3 already has a browser, it just needs updating to be better.
360 needs a browser, surely MS can work that out?

All I want is to watch HD youtube videos on the ps3...

Bah! They'll never make a fully functional youtube on the PS3. It's not like they can't do it, it's that sony doesn't want you to watch stuff in HD otherwise they'll get no sales from their PSN video store.

@JRMG Yeah. That's why BBC iPlayer is available in near-HD (would say it's at least 720p but I have no way of proving/disproving it) quality in the browser, here in the UK (works like a charm, is flash based, supports subtitles etc.). And another 3 channels that stream in 10x better quality then youtube. Plus, there's a zillion websites on the internet that stream video to the PS3 browser just fine. There's also a bookmarklet for the PS3 browser that lets you play Youtube videos in HQ. It seems that the fault here is 100% on Google's side. They probably didn't find the PS3 a viable enough platform to invest in a individual webfront so they decided to just default it to the generic "TV" setup. These things cost money, you know.

@Dark Archon PSN Archonik XBL Dar I'd have to disagree that its Googles fault about youtube sucking on PS3 browser.
The PS3 browser is fairly sucky & hasnt been updated in many years.
Sony needs to put a little effort into updating it.
Its probably on par with Mac IE5.0 from the 90's, I even suspect it is little different from the PS2 browser ;-)
Some elements of youtube are a bit excludatory in terms of how they work though.
For example the search button uses javascript that doesnt work on old browsers (including PS3)
If you have a keyboard for your PS3 you can type in the search box & press "enter" to submit your search - that works. But the search button itself will not work.
At some point web developers have to draw a line with what browsers to support, based on user numbers & quality. I think the PS3 browser is below the line on both counts.

Oh thanks god! My problem with YouTube XL on PS3 is it's complete bullshit.
Hopefully they make a YouTube app for the PS3's XMB. I want it to output in the original video quality (aka HD).

@KNRasengan You don't need an app. The PS3 browser is fully capable of doing high quality streaming. BBC iPlayer in the UK does it that way.

You know there is a thing called PS3youtube.com where if you set it up you can watch all HD youtube videos on your ps3 and even download them in HD and in 480P.

So you go to PS3youtube.com with the PS3 browser? I was originally very excited that PS3 could do youtube, but every video is so low quality, choppy and slow for me.

Hi folks, I'm a new user here. Love the reviews and news. This thread brought me out of my lurker closet to share news that youtube CAN be great on ps3. I'm not sure if links are ok, so I'll just say that google "ps3youtube" and you will find the best user experience ever.
The site can stream from youtube and a number of vids sites up to 720p and.download up to 1080p. ps3 users can also "friend" the dev using the ps3 network for help and to give ideas.
It's the best thing that happened to my ps3,.barring geo-hot.
If the link is ok, I'll leave it to the veterans here to post the link.
(ps: why can't I post vids the mobile site? I've got an htc desire but the mobile site keeps telling me to log in?)
