I wouldn't mind playing an Anniversary Edition style version of 3.

I don't see them putting any more effort into porting this one as they did the last two, so expect a port of the GBA version with slightly enhanced graphics and a redesigned menu system.

They didn't even bother using FFIV DS as a base for the PSP port, so there isn't exactly much hope of them using FFIII DS as a base for something they're barely going to charge a fiver for.

@Wintrale this came out on the GBA? This was only translated into English one time, and that was the DS release with 3d graphics.

Ignore the GBA bit, then, sorry. It'll be graphically the same as the two iPhone games that came before it, but that's about as far as Squeenix will go.

I don't even understand this. Do any games other than $.99 games sell anything on iOS? I can't imagine it's worth it to them to fudge the menu system and sell it for that price. And if it costs more it's probably even less worth it.

@Prince David If there's only one English version, I would think our only hope to get this here is if it's the DS version. If it's the original, I don't see them takin the time or money to localize it. Hopefully it's the DS version!

This game is underrated by the way. Very fun, introduces the job system. I finished the DS version.

I see iOS ports or just games in general as middling pieces of gaming entertainment that are decent in short bursts and nothing more. I'm glad I have an iPod touch to experience some of the indie gems that've made it to the App Store that the traditional handhelds will never receive. However, iOS games just don't have enough substance for a real, true gaming individual like myself (and others who visit Joystiq everyday). I can't play Fruit Ninja or Tilt to Live for half an hour or hours on end like I can Dragon Quest V DS or Ghost of Sparta.

As was I... While I know I'm biased due to it being my first real enjoyable RPG, FF6 (formerly known as FF3) was by far one of the more engrossing RPGs I've played. Never before was I so amazed by reaching the midway point of the game only to find out it was nowhere near the end of the game.

As a side note, anyone else feel saddened that most games today don't allow us to use our imaginations to the same degree as the old school low res sprite graphics did? This focus on graphics and such has really degraded the scope and quality of RPGs.
One can argue about Fallout 3 or Oblivion and the like but rarely was a snes rpg so full of copy/paste.

Back on topic, I'd totally buy an improved FF6 but would prefer it on the ngp when it releases as that will become my main portable.

Ditto. I never got to play 6 (3) when it came out in the US because I didn't have a SNES at the time. All the other FF games 1-5 have been remade in some capacity since then, but not that one.

I'm at the point where I may just track down a used copy of the original. :/

EXACTLY what I was thinking. None of my gaming friends, no matter their orientation, system of preference, genre of preference, sexuality, age, skill level, career path, religion, race have ever got FF3 confused with 6.

It must be an American thing? That's the only conclusion I can come to.

@VeeDeeVee Considering America is the main place where the numbers were confused in the first place, of course this issue is only going to really apply to Americans. But even then, the only people I know that still make the mistake are gamers who were around in that era who don't game now, which itself is a rare form of beast.

I don't think it's an American thing, just a stupidity thing. FFVI has been available proper-like for twelve years now, there's no excuse to keep getting excited when people mention 'FFIII' or think they're talking about anything other than, well, FFIII.

I'm an American, and so are the majority of my friends (derp), and none of them ever mistake it either.

If they're going to keep porting their games they really should choose some that they already haven't ported a billion times.

like VI. or VII. or IX.

please.

eh I suppose they don't need to exert much effort to ensure sales with the kind of fanbase they've got.

Hmm, it's not confusing to me. Ever since we all jumped into the global concious we've followed the Japanese system. 1-3 NES, 4-6 SNES.

I don't think I'd buy this. I have FF1&2 because the iPhone version is kind of the best version of those.
Unless they're using Matrix's FF3 then the DS will continue to have the best FF3 version.

@Draugdraugr Came out on GBA, too.

I would like to think 6 is the one FF they don't want to desecrate with a dozen half assed remakes, they wanna do it properly and that's why we aren't seeing it yet. But then, this is modern day Squenix we're talking about. So that's likely way above them.

This will probably be in the style of FF1&2 (and the PSP remake of 4 coming soon) and they're probably draw higher res assets of the unreleased wonderswan version and use that as a code base. The only reason they never released that was because Wonderswan wasn't super popular and FF4 was guaranteed more sales so they put that out instead. The official excuse that they had technical issues porting the Famicom original just makes absolutely no sense considering it was a Famicom game AND they ported the SNES sequel.

I also hope the magic is overhauled like in FF1&2, the DS version stuck wayyyy to close to it's roots with archaic magic and everything plus frustrating enemies to make up for not being able to cram 'em all on the screen (which they figured out in FF4DS). Purists like the archaic originals but come on, they're such a chore to play through. Most people don't even know that the original FF1's elemental damage stuff was broken. The programmer (Nasir something..) admit this and people discovered it via ROM hacking. Spells the nulified damage did nothing except waste a spot in the magic inventory and also a turn if you used them. So if that's the classic FF you want, that's great but remember it was broken accidentally and never fixed until the remakes.

You know, when a dev puts effort into re-releasing a game with fancier graphics or other such tweaks, then fair play, but if this is just another lazy port them I'll happily step back and let the pirate-carrion descend from their clifftop torrent domains...
