It's an Atlus game. The people who proudly bring you things like Demon's Souls and the Persona series.

...and in case you missed it, they're effin' hard.

Atlus didn't make Demon's Souls.

As for Persona, by the standard of games that Atlus has actually made, Persona is easy.

@bigwhiteyeti Atlus merely brought Demon's Souls over they didn't make it, aside from that yeah Atlus games are usually difficult see Nocturne as a prime example. lol

Dont mean to be "that guy" but Atlus didnt make demons souls.

They merely localized it for NA players.

Yeah Persona was like their easiest one. Following the story, gameplay, everything was just simple. It was good, just simple.

@haziqonfire - I don't think the problem is necessarily the difficulty as much as it is the lack of difference between the modes. If I start a game on "easy" it is probably because I want to experience the story, and not ball bustingly difficult gameplay that has me repeating stages over and over (I'm on the Stage 5 boss right now... OMG). When you die, this awful music plays as well, and gives you a "give up?" screen. If they could stream line it to where I don't have to watch that every time I fail, it would do a lot to help me out.

It's a pretty good game, and I'm glad I imported it, but man is it frustrating. If this patch does anything to alleviate that, I'll be a happy sheep.

Dammit when the hell will this game come stateside...Will it ever come stateside. I'm on the fence about importing, only reason I'm not is because I recall the game has absolutely no english subtitles for the story which is by far the best part of it.

I doubt it. Aside from it being one of Atlus' fully voiced games it also has quite a few sex scenes in it. If it comes to Amurica, it'll need to be censored.

I just wished they'd say Yes it's coming or No it won't make it overseas.
Last thing I want to do is import then they announce a american version is coming (even if it's censored)

@The Aquacharger I'm not sure they will censor it if it comes Stateside. I remember the same controversy over Persona 3's gunshot to the head scenes. I have a strong feeling that Atlus will give us the full experience if it does come over here. Plus, it will drive sales.

I hope Atlus can understand that their fans, the ones who DO want this game to come stateside, and WILL buy it, will NOT want a censored version. Look at what happened with Yakuza 3.

@All above me
First: If the game is AO it can't be on the PS3 or 360. Sony and Microsoft don't allow AO games, neither does Nintendo. This was why Manhunt 2 had to be censored remember?

Second: The reason they're probabally hush hush about it is because they're trying to get an english version to be sent to ESRB to get rated. So they could be making a snippet of the game in English send it to ESRB and waiting the ESRB's approval.

Third: A gunshot to the head is different then watching people have sex. Americans are fine with violence in games, not suicide but violence, but sex is a forbidden one. This is where many games, such as 7 sins, have gotten an AO raiting. Remember when it was found out in GTA:SA you could have sex with your girlfriend? That was what moved it upto an AO rating, not the violence, drugs, or anything else. It was the sex.

Fourth: All developers want their fans to play the game they way they envision it. Problem is rating boards, game companies, and parents don't. No one allows AO games on their consoles. So this game, to be sold, will have to be M. Hopefully ESRB sees it's uncensored-ness to be M (as you don't see much in the sex scenes) but I doubt it.

Fifth: Yes I agree. I'm willing to just accept anything they could throw at us right now, prefer uncen.

@The Aquacharger There is no nudity in the game, and whatever 'sex scenes' there are, it is quite mild. This is not quite the adult-game it is marketed to be.

I know all this because I am playing the game.

That's what I meant. People are still pissed. Still, Atlus seems to have a much better sense about these things than SEGA.

@The Aquacharger - There isn't anything in Catherine that hasn't been in other games that received the M rating. There is no actual nudity shown (only glimpses of side boob ala Mass Effect or plenty of other games). If GTA IV can show penis and get the M rating, Catherine can show side boob.

As for the importability of the game, I'd hold off on it. You can certainly play it, but you'll have no idea what the heck is going on because the story is almost entirely delivered via cut scenes of people talking. The nightmare mode gameplay is kind of hard without knowing what is going on as well, because it gives you instructions for how blocks react, and what powerups do, etc. If I didn't know what they are saying (I can't read or write Japanese, but I can understand it spoken) I'm not sure I'd be enjoying the game at all.

It's up to you. Eighty dollars is a lot to spend for something you might not understand.

@BananaBoat

Not necessarily, like any other rating system, either governmental like Europe or industry-optional like the US, the amount of clout you have with the ratings board tends to make a big difference. Rockstar is a major industry player and could heavily leverage the ESRB and PEGI systems for lower ratings while Atlus, a smaller player, likely won't have the same impact. The same thing is seen in the film industry where independent films with violence and sex tend to more frequently get the NC-17 rating vs major studio films that can get away with the same.

Testers more so find bugs and glitches. If your intent is to make a game hard, and it's well too hard, how will a tester know this? After all the tester has been sitting there moving Block 1 to Spot A for about an hour and a half with the enemies on and off at random.

You, you do not need a Japanese console if you get it for the PS3. PS3 games are region-free. You would need one for the 360 version, though.

The problem is on the "Easy" setting it is extremely difficult in the Nightmare section so this patch will hopefully tone it down on the lesser difficulties.

While I know little Japanese I didn't understand much of the story or what was going on. But, I felt the puzzle climber scenes were alright for difficulty.
From what little I understood I liked the game. I do highly reccomend it, and if you have a PS3 you can snag the demo off the JP store. When it asks for address info and all that just enter in random letters/numbers.

@Faenix - The overarching themes are pretty obvious if you pay attention to the enemies that show up. You'll miss the subtleties, but you can still play the game.

For anyone interested, I think the following sums up the gameplay of Catherine: "Macabre Qbert". I'm not sure how many people remember Qbert, but the gameplay is reminiscent for sure, although a lot more complicated.
