David O. Russell responds to Uncharted movie fan concerns
122
David O. Russell is currently making headlines as the Academy Award-nominated director of The Fighter. But gamers are probably more interested in one of his next projects: a silver screen adaptation of the Uncharted series. The numerous changes made to the core story have some fans concerned that Russell simply doesn't get it. Responding to those accusations, Russell told SlashFilm that he's "played the game a bunch of times" and has even met Naughty Dog's Amy Hennig. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm very respectful as far as the core content and spirit of the game."
Russell argues that "there's not a bunch of movies you can point to that are made from games that are amazing movies, that stand up to time as a franchise or as [individual films]." By focusing on "what I think is going to be an amazing movie," Russell says that "it's going to be real, it's going to be raw, it's going to be intense, it's going to be original, and it's going to be propulsive."
(And he apparently doesn't know who Nathan Fillion is.)

It's not that he's a BAD director, it's that he's an inappropriate choice when we consider the type of movie that we all hope Uncharted would be, which, at the end of the day, is basically just a modern day Indiana Jones. (Fun action/adventure set pieces, daring escapes, witty banter, light romantic elements, lots of bullets, etc.)
It's like asking Alfred Hitchcock to direct Die Hard --- just a bad combination.
Russell is digging himself deeper and deeper the more he opens his mouth though.

@copa No you're not the only one. People are throwing fits because Nathan Fillion wasn't cast as Drake, and it's not playing out exactly like they imagined it would in their little fan boy heads. I love Nathan Fillion and think he would have been dope for the role, but let's go ahead and get over it and just wait and see what happens. I guarantee everybody on here whining about it will see this movie in theaters. Period.

That's about EVERY attempt by hollyweird and I did enjoy 'The Fighter' too! Them libertardic hollyweirdos just can't figure out Absolutely Everything and have now run to comic books! and remakes of old tv shows to cash in now. Attempts at making flicks outta games have been running 1 to Uncountable on the scale. 'Mortal Combat' pulled in the bennies despite taking long number two all over it and That Is It for them.

I really dont think its about him being a bad director or him not being able to make this movie good. Its about him taking the name uncharted and making it into something totally different. Think of the american super mario brothers 2. The game had nothing to do with the Mario universe besides having the Mario characters in it. It was a completely different game they threw the name on and passed it off as Mario for the sake of it.
Based on all his ideas on what this movie will become, its going to turn into one of those situations where people see the movie then go play the game and ask: "How are these even related?"

You've got it all wrong. King Koopa was definitely a T-Rex.
It sounds like Russell is assuming that the void of good movies based on video games is a result of film makers trying to stay too faithful to ideas from the games.
Ironically, the only good video game movie is the one that changed the least in the transition from game to film.

You obviously havent been keeping up with what is going on with this movie. The casting was not the big part of why people are against this movie, people are upset with how the movie is coming along itself, look through some of the older articles joystiq had on here about it and you will see why people have been reacting like this. The direction russell is going with this movie is breaking away from everything the game is and its just going to be a generic pile of crap instead of the masterpiece the games were

Let's get the important parts aside first.
1) Three Kings is a great movie, but not because of Mark Wahlberg.
2) The Fighter is a /good/ movie despite Mark Wahlberg.
You can be a fine director, but putting an awful actor as your main character will usually make the film utter shit. As stated, The Fighter was an odd exception. And as many have pointed out, there are other director's much better suited to the source material. He wants to make it something totally different and be taken seriously, when Uncharted is all about being the game equivilant of a popcorn movie.

Why bother getting the Uncharted name if you're not going to make it somewhat like the game?
Maybe the cost of buying the name guarantees a certain amount of money for the movie?

Maybe that has something to do with movies being made out of games like Mario (Oh hi, bob hoskins) Street Fighter, and Doom. Do i really even need to explain just how vastly different they are from a game like Uncharted?

the thing is with doom if anything the best part of that movie was the first person point it was at least a throwback to the game as well as pinky.
The issue is they felt for some reason they needed a human v Human thing which is what screwed it
SMB was ruined because it basically went we have 2 guys with moustaches now lets do something stupid with them.
If they get out the whole real world spiel from it they could have made a decent movie instead you had some poor special effects and goomba's that look nothing like them
then we have uncharted as much as i want fillion in it i don't care that he's not. He has Castle and hopefully at somepoint another DR horrible on the way
The issue is that the script is a bastardisation of uncharted that for the most part is probably another movie that's been shoehorned to try and fit in the uncharted world
when the original uncharted basically is set for a movie as it is. Theres no reason to change it. I Don't care that i know whats going to happen i just want to see an awesome adaptation and then with the sequel you go and beat your own path based on that.
instead where gonna end up with a bunch of characters that will bear little to no resembelence personality wise as they do in the game

I dont understand why you'd pay for Uncharted rights. So many similar stories and characters are out there just loosely base your characters off of Uncharted archetyes and dont pay anyone but yourself.
In a narrative sence Nathan Drake is as deep as a glass of water. Just cast a younger Harrison Ford and give him dusty clothes.

He really needs to stop talking. Every time he says something he pisses off the fans more and more. If you played the game, how do you figure your movie fits in the Uncharted franchise? I am baffled, unless he played Indiana Lego or coke...lots and lots of coke.

@Duc748s You speak the truth. And I don't know much about David Russell, but you'd think that he would realize that EVERY TIME HE F***ING TALKS about the movie, the Internet turns into a river of flame. Hey Russell, maybe you should listen to the only people you know are interested in the movie.
It's not like we're some crazy fringe group. We are the people that played and bought the game! A logical assumption would be that we are the people who will care if someone makes a movie about it.

True. I do think he's a good actor, but he definitely has a limited range, and Nathan Drake does not fall within it. If there's one thing Wahlberg is not particularly good at, it's being self-deprecating and vulnerable, which are key qualities of the Drake character. They're also qualities Nathan Fillion demonstrated in spades as Malcolm Reynolds. Hell, Indiana Jones, Malcolm Reynolds and Nathan Drake are all pretty much the same character if you think about it...and squint...

You forgot to mention this line.
How can he claim to understand the game, if he can say this with a straight face. Maybe uncharted isn't the best example but the context was more a general comment about games, at least how I read it.

Propulsive? Christ he's making a movie, not re-inventing the wheel. You'd expect to hear this kind of tripe beforehand. Methinks two things:
1) A Michael Bay like "experience"; car chasers/explosions/female lead masterbatory material/crap script
2) Or straight to DVD. Which might be better.
