Turns out "the right time" is going to be this spring. As rumored, Microsoft is busy prepping the release of an official, non-commercial Kinect for Windows Software Development Kit this spring in the hopes of advancing the work already being done unofficially by hackers, scientists and of course, musicians. Would-be German SDK creators may want to hurry things up.
Revealed during Microsoft's internal "show-and-tell discussion" known as TechForum, Microsoft chief research and strategy office Craig Mundie, along with Interactive Entertainment Business pres Don Mattrick, announced their plans to release the SDK as a free download this spring. The project is a "collaboration" between Microsoft Research and IEB and promises to "give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to key pieces of the Kinect system -- such as the audio technology, system application programming interfaces and direct control of the Kinect sensor itself."
Of course, being a non-commercial offering, we expect to hear more about the commercial counterpart for those who may want to charge for Kinect-enhanced software. Us? We're just interested in seeing the next evolution in our ongoing Kinect Hacks series!

Awesome... I'm assuming this means that the mods would work better when using this than with the third party *hacked* drivers?

@Raffi256 Yeah, if they release a bunch of middleware libraries I will be very pleased. It would be great to just be able to plumb up applications to 'standardised' Kinect gestures rather than having to build your own (or modify open source ones). Inevitablly this leads to inconsistency and (arguably) lower quality.

I would really much prefer XNA for Xbox 360 support. But whatever.

@Robborboy I kind of considered this news one and the same. Even though it isnt explicitly mentioned I assume it to be so.

I wonder if they'd also market a 'Kinect for Windows' hardware SKU as well.

@Epoque I dont think MS has any intention of keeping Kinect limited to the 360. They want this thing everywhere. In a decade it will be the size of a quarter taped to your television.

That's cool. I don't know much about the technical details involved but Kinect definitely offers some new tools to the industry.
Opening some barriers lets more folks contribute their ingenuity, which will only advance the gaming/electronics industry further.

This means I shouldn't sell my usb and power outlet adapter. Damn, was home to make some money on them!

Honestly, crap move by Microsoft. Don't they like anything to be Xbox 360 exclusive? I guess they make money either way, but it seems like it defeats the purpose of someone buing an Xbox 360 or new PC w/ Windows installed on it. They'll do one or the other, not both.

"Non-commercial" means this thing isn't going to end up in pc games. It's meant for people toying around with it's abilities.
They weren't going to do this at all, until people started hacking it, and putting it to use themselves. So better to release an official "non-commercial" application than to let people keep going willy-nilly with it. You may not like what they are doing, but at least you have better control of it if they flock to the "official" software instead of downloading and using a third party program.

I am glad to see how well Microsoft is embracing the abstract usage of the Kinect. This is another step in the direction of Microsoft saying, "Yeah guys, keep up the free marketing of our product!"
