Just when we were about to give up on Square Enix, melting all our intricate Final Fantasy figurines in protest of the company's lack of offerings on the North American PSN, we receive a ray of hope. PlayStation Blog has announced that Xenogears -- which has been available on the Japanese PSN since June 2008 -- will arrive on the U.S. PlayStation Store with its next update this coming Tuesday.
We'll still need a few more PSOne RPGs to come our way before we stop being so totally mad at Square Enix -- but if memory serves, Xenogears is something of a lengthy affair. Maybe it'll be enough to distract us from our unbridled rage for a month or two.

I wasn't "cool" enough to be insane about RPGs back when this first dropped. I am excited for the chance to pick up a legit copy that isn't super expensive.

@McWeen The game isn't that expensive (playsation original that is). You can find a copy for 30 to 50 dollars really. Though is cheaper to get it this way and Xenogears always gave me problems on my PS2 for some reason O_O
I am glad I still have my copy though, my favorite game bar none...DAMN IT now I got to replay it for the 6th time :P

@foxhound Okay, I understand a regular game or a special edition affecting your "wallet" but a PSN game?
You either need to budget better, get a job or stop buying games.

I admit, I am an ass...I tend to get worked up over the little things. Whether you believe it or not, I do regret saying a lot of things I say in the heat of the moment. On the flip side, I don't mind it if people get smarmy with me in kind. I do realize I deserve it, lol.

@FuriousMailman Dude, I said your comment was inane and smug, not you. I hope you are not thinking this is a moral victory. I've been critiqued for months already long before your 'TABLES HAVE TURNED" comment.

@TheShaper I just don't think many people cared. The customization was so convoluted and over-complicated that it turned most people off right away. I can't say I blame them, but once you get sucked in it's brilliant.
You can see echos of it in Final Fantasy 12 (which I also loved), but a proper sequel would have been wonderful.

My favorite PSone game. It really is too bad there never was a sequel.
According o IGN there was an announcement for VS coming to North America http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1142166p1.html

Yeah, I remember the ESRB rating was leaked at same time as Xenogears. I suppose I can understand them drawing out their RPG releases to avoid eating into each other's sales, but I've been jonesing for VS for a while now. I loved Xenogears 13 years ago, but I don't think could go back to it.

The sheer mention of Xenogears fills a lot of people with hope. False hope unfortunatelly.

It wasn't seen as a "core property" by Square's management who didn't want it to compete against the FF series, the team left Square and formed MonolithSoft and made Xenosaga and some other games.

For those of you who haven't played it yet:
1) Fan-freaking-god-damned-tastic combat system. Seriously, it is just the best method for RPG combat I've ever played.
2) Giant mechs in a not-quite-as-good-but-still-satisfying combat system. The idea of 'fuel' will infuriate you to no end.
3) Can't skip dialog. This will get old really quick.
4) One of the characters is a giant fluffy pink bunny thing. Yeah...
5) Once you get the disc 2, you will hate the game.
6) The plot is more holey than swiss cheese, and more convoluted than Eva.
7) If you are religious, or have ever been religious, or know somebody who is religious, or know anything at all about any religion, you will perform an average of 4 facepalms an hour.
Still, I highly recommend playing this game. Then go and read the plot to Xenosaga (1, 2, and 3). Then sit back and go "OOOOOOOoooohh.... THAT'S what they were trying to do."
Note: Don't actually play Xenosaga - I don't want to be the one responsible for making you do that.

Not sure it was the best system but the sprite combat was beautiful and was fun enough.... but gah! grindy? and I hated pretty much everything else about the game, basically along the lines you laid out

...yeah that second disc did jump of cliff in story line didn't it.
I like storylines and all, but with that 2nd disc..., I had somebody else sit through it and told em to call me when they could move Fei around again or when fighting started.

Only if you take religion seriously. Which Xenogears most fortunately does not.
And yeah, disk 2, ugh. I made a post of my own about that, somewhere down the comment list, before I saw this one.

@bm111 It's not about seriousness in any way shape or form - it's really more the fact that the game takes themes, imagery, and ideas from all the major religions, jumbles them together, and finally presents them in a way that would resemble a fanfic written by a 14-year-old. For no reason.

@bm111 Why would that matter? Would you be alright if the game made the same insinuations about a race, country, political movement, age group, or anything else? It's not about being 'too serious' - it's a matter of a game taking the fundamentals of several religious groups and using them in a completely off-the-wall and fictitious manner in a way that just comes out strange and haphazard. I don't think the game does it in an insulting manner, but it certainly doesn't treat the material with any amount of respect.

@arrrdawg I need to replay Crono Cross - the first playthrough I had to force myself to complete it after getting tired of trying to muddle through the plot. I recall not liking the D&D-esque magic system and relying heavily on combat-based characters (which made the final boss... interesting).
