- Game Informer (9.25/10): "Epic Games/People Can Fly's sadistic opus arrives at a time when most shooters do little more than let you blast dudes in the head while things explode. Bulletstorm has those things, but also lets you shoot a man in the testicles and kick slide his head off."
- Eurogamer (9/10): "On the surface, People Can Fly has delivered a sustained rumination on what it feels like to really boot somebody in the nuts. Yet beneath all that is a design built on years of watching audiences play outside of the rules in other shooters."
- Wired (7/10): "The game is rated 'M' for mature, which means that children under 17 cannot buy it, which is a shame because teenagers would crack up playing this game. What demographic likes penis jokes more, I ask you?"
- 1UP (B-): "When it lets itself, it's a fantastic adrenaline rush through well-constructed set-pieces and gloriously fun-to-watch violence. But it too often drags itself down with overly structured situations and restrictive, strategy-heavy gameplay."
Metareview: Bulletstorm

People Can Fly's over-the-top shooter Bulletstorm received high marks in our hot-off-the-presses review -- but was everyone else as willing as we were to overlook the game's juvenile overtones and frequent mistreatments of the English language? Let's take a look at some highlights from other critics' write-ups!

games now a days get easy passes on scores.. 9.25?? 9?? so this game is one point away from being perfect? yeaaaahhh ooook... c'mon thats itself is an insult to gaming.
Ironically this game looks like its targeted towards a demographic that its ESRB rating isn't for (or at least i hope) Wired's review pretty much summed it all up
*waits for the inevitable downvotes*

I totally agree. I hate how < 7 is garbage, 8 = Good, 9 = Great.

I didn't really care for the demo myself, but the game is getting good reviews pretty universally (4.5 on Joystiq as well), so I'd say it's less an insult to gaming or sites giving high scores to freely & more just something you don't personally agree with. Plenty of games still get mediocre reviews from all these same places.

really, i mean when is that excuse going to get old... i don't have to actually PLAY the game to know how the game plays out. You shoot a bunch of baddies in the face, chest, balIs and feet and you get a funny sex referenced name to go along with your actions. There will be gigantic bosses, you will be able to do something specific that they will claim no FPS has, bullets will never run out, health with regenerate and you will probably be able to beat the whole thing in a matter of hours. Yeah that looks like it deserves a 9.25 to me.

@PR0F3TA 9 means better than average, 7 means dont buy it and a 6 means it should have never been made. anything below a 6 writers add for comic relief. its a major reason game journalism is laughed at by most of the press. they just make up numbers on a scale that makes no sense.they dont want their free games, interviews and press passes to dry up see?
i noticed this first a decade ago with M when they woyld spend 3 or 4 paragraphs bashing a game and then give it a 7.
joystiq's is actually pretty good compared to mostt since they have an identifiable key that they stick fairly close to.

Does that mean you don't play FPS's anymore? Because all the FPS's I've played in the last few years (more or less 3 years) have had that "definition" (or description) that you gave and yet people buy them... If you don't like how the game presents itself (better said, if you don't expect the game to be to your liking) then by all means don't buy it... Doesn't mean that you have to come into its article and comment badly about it... You can do that amongst your friends, can't you? Mind you, I'm not saying this game is the best FPS ever (nor have I played it, although I did consider buying it, since I'm starting to get tired of pseudo-realistic shooters, yet I haven't because of budget problems), but if I wanted to mention/say that it isn't worth buying, then I would at least finish the game and then give it a rather complete review as to why it shouldn't be bought... :S

one reason it will sell well is cause of the gears Beta on the 360 and it will probably reach platinum hits or whatever it's called. and it won't reach greatest hits on PS3 ( maybe wrong but doubt it ) sorry it can get 10's across every website in existance I'M STILL NOT BUYING IT !

Got both KZ3 and Bulletstorm and decided to go with Bstorm. About 30 mins into it and enjoying the hell out of it. Mindless, over the top and fun. Overall design/feel of the game feels very refreshing somehow even though the art direction has a Gears of War vibe to it. Sometimes it's nice to just "turn off your brain". Going to be a blast playing this after a hard days work.

Which is more indicative of immaturity: the willingness to embrace something that is willfully immature on its own merits, or the compulsion to shun something (or someone) on the grounds that it you are "too mature" for it/them?

Honestly here, I didn't like the demo at all, but I still kept my preorder from Amazon with the hopes that the final actual game would be just as these reviews describe. A "mindless" hunk of shooting action, no real purpose, but a lot of fun to play. I trust those guys at Epic don't necessarily go for the story itself, but the gameplay is what matters to them.
There was a time I got tired of all the FPSs being about move forward and shoot everything, ala, Serious Sam. But recently, all FPS try to have a story, even a "we need an excuse to do X cool stuff" story, and what happened to make a game just cause the gameplay was awesome, nothing more. Your could say the original Mario was that, just excellent gameplay, with little story (now Mario has different universes and version of himself, etc.). I like that Epic decided to do just this: lets make a nasty, in your face, 10 hour fun fest of a shooter, screw anything else; fun and gameplay are #1 priority.
Can't wait to play it tonight.

I played the demo and it was fun, I will probably buy it at some point. Not right out of the gate, but somewhere down the line. The thing I noticed about this game, yes it's graphically violent. Yes, it's crude. But there's an undeniable "Cartoon" quality to this.
I do not like young kids playing games like Call of Duty (my 13 year old nephew plays CoD, and let me put it this way, if he was my son he'd not be.) I think a game like this (or say Borderlands) is actually something I wouldn't mind a kid of 13 or so playing because it's just so ridiculously over the top it's not much more different than an anvil falling on Elmer Fudd's head.
Kids are violent, sure, I was a 12 year old boy once. I know what went through my head as a 12 year old. It was how is Starscream going to blow the crap out of Optimus Prime. Then I would run around outside and yell with a tiny barbaric yop. That's what kids do. This game is fun and really it's something that's not entirely out of the question for kids (just older kids who may watch the infrequent Die Hard movie.)

LOVE BULLET-STORM, BUT IT HAS A SHIT LOAD OF BUGS & GLITCHES.
Getting stuck at control panels or at some turrets & corners aside from those few concerns the game is way FK COOL.

Mixed reviews paired with the subpar demo and glitches outta the box = me waiting a few months for that inevitable $15-25 dollar price drop, especially with a game like this... and hopefully a patch (aka this gen's reason to not have a QA dept).

So is the full game significantly better than the demo?
I thought this would be a game I'd enjoy but I was pretty bored playing the demo.
Shame there's no campaign co-op to make the decision easier.

I really wanna slap whoever it was that sent the precedent for "mature" to have meanings in regards to simply being of age and fully developed versus content that has a certain level of intelligence to it. I get so sick of people making the same lame-ass "ironic how such-and-such is rated mature despite being so immature" joke every damn time a game like this pops up. It's not clever and never has been, and it only gets more and more cliche and tired.

I tried the demo, didn't like it at all. But then I hear it's not a good idea to compare that demo to the full game. Reviews seem decent so I might just take a gamble on it, but not until it drops in price a bit. Got Killzone 3 to play first anyway. Will give the demo another try and see if it grows on me, didn't really give it a fair chance as I turned it off rather quickly.

Did anyone pay attention to what anyone was saying about it during the last E3?
It was the #1 most anticipated game that EVERYONE in the press was looking forward to playing. Even seeing just screenshots and videos made me very impressed.
To the rest of the people with your "the game is just too immature for me" vibe: God forbid you have a sense of humor and just laugh at how ridiculous the dialog in the game might be. The game is an over the top action title that will be a sleeper hit because people are stuck playing Call of Duty: Black Ops.

What's with all the hoopla about this game, Joystiq? I can't recall how many postings I've seen at this website about this game in the last few weeks. I guess I have to take a closer look. But, nothing I've seen about it thus far has even remotely piqued my interest. From the coverage, it would almost seem like someone has a friend or relative that works for the developer.
