PSA: Dragon Age 2, Lego Star Wars 3 demos available today
56
Like shady peddlers of exotic, habit-forming narcotics, the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store are offering users a free taste of two products before they launch at retail. Fans of gigantic RPGs, honorable knights and ancient dragons should turn their eyes towards the demo for -- what else? -- Dragon Age 2. Fans of gigantic AT-ATs, Jedi Knights and ancient Qui-Gons would be better suited for the Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars demo. (Note: Qui-Gon Jinn probably isn't in this game. We just needed the symmetry.)
The demos are available now on XBLM, and will arrive on the PlayStation Store later today, following the weekly PSN update. The demo for Dragon Age 2 will also make its way to PC sometime today -- we'll let you know when it shows up.

Um, Dragon Age 1 was hardly an "underground" game. Go back to your Starbucks latte, hipster.

forthe PC combat is still just as tactical as the first game. the pace is faster, but its hardly a button masher. you can (and on higher difficulties, WILL) pause the game to issue commands to your party.
they just made it work better on consoles, which i guess is ok. I don't get why PC gamers are so up in arms over this change, must be missinformation combined with pure unadultrated hatred for all things that even hint at console influence.

Merging the immersive frenetic feeling of really being there and taking part in a battle with blade in hand and lightening at your finger tips with the depth and progression of an RPG is, contrary to your belief, not submitting to the mainstream.
It's the evolution of gaming. It's a shame you're trapped thinking the genre boundaries are supposed to be kept apart. I've been waiting most of my life to see the real time immersion and detailed graphical worlds and combat (and pure fun) of walking around inside another world that only action games could provide to be merged with the massive seamless worlds to explore and character progression of RPGs.
The last ten to eight years have finally started to steer in that direction. I can't stand the arrogant sticks in the mud who stigmatize everything, if you'll pardon the stigmatization.
There's plenty of room for all the genres of gaming, and it's not dumbing down things to "hack and slash" to explore these new gaming horizons.
If you want a traditional turn based RPG, there are plenty of them to choose from.
It's stomach churning to see the purists come out of the woodwork trying to stand in the way of this sort of game, claiming it's an inferior product. This is just another step in the evolution of virtual world building for people to explore and feel a part of. There's no law that says in order for you to enjoy a full sized virtual world to explore of varying landscapes with a rich branching storyline and the progressing life and abilities of a virtual character that you have to stand there and pretend to take part in a battle while standing still and watching random number generators present the meat of the experience.
How dare you people claim this is "anti gamer", that's so arrogant and pompous and blindly lacking in vision it's just ridiculous.
Get your heads out of the sand.

@Halfcentaur Darn tootin' I'm an old school gamer (I remember buying the Gold Box back in the day and remember the joy at my first Bioware/Black Isle experiences.) I've yet to see the PC demo but they were maintaining the style of the first game while allowing for a console style experience. This gives EVERYONE the chance to enjoy.
I trust Bioware, looked at ME2 for an example of improving on the predecesor. ME was amazing but flawed, the same holds true for Dragon Age (believe me I'm replaying now as there was a ton of DLC I hadn't finished so actually restarted so I could be fresh off the game before doing DA2) it's good but a flawed experience too. If the improvment is on the scale of ME1 to ME2 then we're in for a treat.

yes yes yes; a thousand times yes!
I am so glad you were able to articulate my irritated feelings whenever people shout about 'dumbing down'. Games are so amazing right now and I despise people who claim to be fans of the medium but complain about everything new.

@Angel Mass if I remember correctly (just wikkied it and did) 100 years. There have been 9 so far. Dragon Age: Origins is towards the start of the Dragon Age (the return of the Dragons and the Blight.) So no need for a new age yet. If they keep up at 10 year incriments between game settings we've got 8 more to go before they need to think of the next age's name.

Still trying to decide if I should get Dragon Age 2 on PC or PS3. I prefered DA Origins on PC, but I prefer Mass Effect 2 on PS3, so I guess I'll have to play through the demo on each platform. Anyone else in this boat?

@bass I just tried the demo out on my 360, and have come to the conclusion that the PC's going to be the winner here. There's no gameplay advantage to pressing A repeatedly to instigate what would otherwise be an auto-attack.
God of War, it ain't.

@bass The only reason I got DA on PC (to be honest) was nostalgia but I'm glad I did. It's an infinitely better experience on the PC. Better graphics (DA2 uses DX11,) better game play, and just all around better experience.

And apparently, if we do the "monumentally impossible" and download that demo 1 million times, we get two freebie books. We'll have that unlocked before the day is done.

I very much want to forego the demo myself, so as not to spoil the full game in a few weeks.
I doubt i'll be able to resist though.

Considering the servers are so hammered right now and it's downloading for me at dial-up speeds of 6 kbps, you can start now and it will be finished downloading by the time the game releases.

Could care less about the Dragon Age 2 demo. Protected saves screw me over once, shame on you. Protected saves screw me over twice, shame on me.
I skipped Mass Effect 2 over this and will likewise do so for Need For Speed Shift 2 and Dragon Age 2 unless EA stops this anti-gamer behaviour.

I think "could care less" is appropriate since the games mentioned were, at least, decent. In that respect he could care less if the games were bad, however his "less caring" was in fact brought upon by the protected saves.
I conclude that the use of "could care less" was perfectly reasonable.

Download rates on PC are garbage for DA 2. EA if you can't handle the download stress, give it to some clients/sites who will. Supposedly they sent it out for mirrors, but nothing's shown up at
20 mb/s download rate and i'm only getting 150kbs on this download. lol
