Hudson's final years detailed by insider
17
In about a month, Hudson will likely be nothing more than a brand name, having been fully absorbed by Konami. In a post on The Kartel, John "Master" Lee, who wore a couple of hats at US-based Hudson Entertainment -- including former VP of sales and marketing, and general manager of games publishing -- explains in his own words the "downfall" of the company.
Lee, who was employed at Hudson Entertainment from 2006 until 2009, and continued working with the company after he left, gives a detailed account of Hudson's US division's rise and fall. He explains how the disaster of Bomberman: Act Zero came to be, why the US division started making good money for the company and how that attention eventually led Konami to make its final takeover. It's a good human account of the big business of gaming and cross-Pacific relations.

Man, the year it came out; the multitap was the only thing I really wanted for my SNES. My mom couldn't find it by itself. So, that xmas; she bought the only other way to get it.. Coupled with Super Bomberman. I have loved that franchise ever since (except for Act Zero of course.) Then came Mario Party and Fusion Frenzy. Hudson made such great party games :( I'm so going to miss them.

@Shockwave Kirby Superstar... used to love game!
Hudson has made a lot of good games, it's reputation sadly destroyed by Act Zero and some other bad games out there is kinda weird.
You know... lots of other companies have done some mistakes... and are still there... *stares at Capcom and SNK*

First thing i think of every time i hear hudson or see the bumblebee logo is Milon's secret castle.
I know most people will think bomberman and adventure island and rightfully so but Milon was one of my first games that i ever owned, also it sucked so bad that i remember wishing that i could have went back in time to the toys-r-us and asked my parents for metroid instead.
Thanks for the good games Hudson but screw you for Milon's Secret Castle.

Wow.
And here I thought I already thought I had enough reasoning to hate Bomberman Act Zero.

As far as I know, nobody said Konami wouldn't continue to use the Hudson Soft name for the foreseeable future or that they would stop the development of Hudson Soft games.
However, it is sad to see Hudson go as an independent company.

It really is more of when Taito was bought by Square Enix, hopefully it stays like that and not like when Squaresoft bought Quest.

Is that the same John Master Lee that was caught doing very unsubtle viral Marketing for Borderlands on Neogaf? That was quite embarrassing...
Still, interesting read.

Ah yes, the whole NeoGAF incident. Yes, that is me.
It would have been embarrassing if it was true. If you read through to the end of that whole thread, it was revealed that the founder of NeoGAF actually got it wrong... I never worked on Borderlands.
I eventually documented all of it, which is a pretty fascinating look at how quickly wild accusations can spread on the net (IGN and some other big gaming sites ended up doing stories on it) before the truth catches up.
Truth be told, at least this was how I felt back then, I was more miffed that I never got my NeoGAF account back since I was banned. NeoGAF (Tyler) never bother to apologize, or reply to my emails to share his side of the story, or let people clarify the error made (he ended up locking the thread.)
Anyways, you can read about it here. Ah, another fascinating look into the gaming industry!

@JohnMasterLee Wow, you're right. I never saw the end of that thread before. In that case I apologize for what I wrote, since there is no absolute proof (well, there never was).
Still, i think you understand very well how the combination of your extreme display of excitement about the RPG features of Borderland (that pretty much no one shared or could even follow) and how you yourself advertised your profession on your homepage would raise the red flags that it did. It simply came off as very insincere.
And while Take 2 denied employing you, there is still the possibility that you worked on your own to show how you can do exactly what you described on your page. Of course it would be extremely stupid to do this with a username that easily tracks back to your page, but stupider things have been done in the past by marketers.
So I kind of understand why Neogaf would not reactivate your account.
