PSN classics archive numbers over 600 games ... in Japan

Sony recently celebrated the considerable size of its "Game Archives" on the Japanese PlayStation Store, which now warehouses more than 600 titles of yesteryear. Siliconera took note of the achievement (er, Trophy?), pointing out that the collection spans a modest assortment of TurboGrafx-16 and Neo Geo games, but for the most part it's made up of PS1 titles.

Comparatively, the North American Store carries a considerably lighter load of 127 "PSOne Classics," 13 "PSOne Imports" and 10 Neo Geo games, according to our count. The EU Store is lighter still with just 96 Classics and 10 NeoGeo titles. So, yeah, Sony's a little behind on hitting that 7,000 milestone (by the end of 2007), but it's complicated, right?

yea i love the fact that it's not region locked. i used to go to the JP store and download demos when the PS3 first came out since they always seemed to get them first. really simple to do.

The Wii Virtual Console is the same story. Japan has over 200 more titles available than North America.

You can also make a US account and download it. Just like I can make a EU account and download Vagrant story.

The only problem is that you have to log in and reauthorize your PSP when you want to switch to your different accounts. Not too hard, but not the friendliest thing to have to do all the time. Plus, you're out of luck if you can't get an internet connection.

It wouldn't be so bad, but so often with get truly terrible shovelware PSOne games that no one wants to play instead of actual classics.

Spec Ops is the Best of the best of PS1 classic in NA.
Still trying to figure out who allowed those horrible games to be put up.
I don't recall a demand for them.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 was the shit. played the hell out of that.

and actually, you can play PSOne games on any PS3 if you can find it. check eBay. it wouldn't be portable like a download one but you can still play it.

yea dude. they all play PSOne games but the original PS3 (20 & 60GB) basically had a PS2 inside to handle PS2 games, which probably helped with that price tag. then the 40 & 80GB PS3s came out which had the PS2 removed and PS2 gaming handled by software emulation but it wasn't 100%. after that, they just removed all PS2 back compatibility but PSOne stayed throughout. now go change your underpants and enjoy some THPS2.

typical of sony to grossly exaggerate numbers. Not to say I don't like their products, but I've long stopped believing the hyperbole they like to send out.

What exaggeration? They're not exaggerating anything. They clearly have that amount of games available on the PSN in Japan.

Unless you're referring to their 7000 remark.

I love it that PS One games on PSN are typically $6 unless they're popular -- then they're $10.

It was weird that Resident Evil 1 was $10, but RE2 which was 2 discs is $6, actually is on sale right now for $3, but you get the picture.

All I want is Bushido Blade 1 or 2.. or both.. or an HD remix of both... Or a full fledged sequel on PSN in a modern game engine!

That's all I want.

Look up in the top right corner of the screen. Third icon from the right, you'll see a magnifying glass. Press 'X' when you have it highlighted; boom, search box.

Like it should matter to you anyway, not having internet service and all...

Recently bought a Japanese PSN card, then went crazy japanese game hunting. Strange picross games? Got those. Affordable copy of Einhander? Yep, that too!

time for me to buy a japanese PSN card...Needs me that game.

@mrantimatter Yeah, the whole game's in English outside of the descriptions of the ships, which you don't really need anyway. In fact, all the voice is in English with Japanese subtitles. The most english friendly of games.

Give us Einhander, and we'll call it even.

well there's no reason to really bring good games to cheap american's.

I'm still waiting for the original Xtreme (crazy fun game), Dino Crisis 2 and even Road Rash.
