DICE community manager Daniel Matros has posted on the Battlefield 3 forums that the "Back to Karkand" content pack (free on launch day with an in-box code, EA-style) will have four old Battlefield maps done up in the new Frostbite 2 engine: the original Wake Island, along with Battlefield 2's Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman, and the Sharqi Peninsula. That's right, Wake Island again, as if enough blood hasn't been shed on that little patch of ground.
When a player asked if that's all of the retro maps returning to the game, Matros declined to "comment on any of that at the moment," which in community manager speak usually means something other than no, leaving a chance, however small, to get your Kubra Dam action on someday. But seriously, who's going to be bothering around with all of those old maps on launch day anyway? Gotta go find those new chokepoints, right?
[Thanks, tengu_soldier!]

I really really really really really really want to see how awesome destructible environments will be with the TV station HQ on Sharqi. That place was CRAWLING with dudes camping for the US chopper.

@FlashJS Probably. That was the same one that was in Battlefield 2 (even though there may have been some minor changes). I can't really see them changing it all that much.

@FlashJS Indeed, especially when you replace single engine dogfighters with modern jets, and throw 64 players into the map.

It was terrible in BF2. All anyone on the US team ever did was wait in a line for one of the two jets. It was incredibly stressful for anyone trying to actually play the game, especially as commander.
Come to think of it, that was every BF2 map that had an aircraft carrier..

WAKE ISLAND! I love that DICE is making such an awesome return to BF proper. I really hope the mass market can ditch COD and go to the superior series/game.

This is one thing I don't mind having re-used. CoD games SELLING maps from the previous game EVERY year is insane. but it's been 6 years since BF2 and these maps are FREE. EPIC win. I love these maps . day 1 purchase

When playing Wake Island for hours on end in 1942, I always thought it would be really sad when 1942 got old and new things came along and there would be no more Wake Island.
Then there was 1943 and now Battlefield 3.
I am a very very happy gamer.

As fun as that map was, it was honestly a mess trying to keep the attackers off of your flags. While it provided quite a bit of fun, and hectic moments, it was often frustrating when attacking with the Marines, while the MEC got all the fun.

I agree, it was my most frustrating and most favorite map. If you had a dedicated squad, that knew the map well. Attacking was a matter of coordination and timing. if you didn't get past the first checkpoints as usmc, you would have to deal with snipers and nade spammers. The trick was getting past that. Once you get past that though, it was a super fun mix of close quarter combat, vehicular combat, and some roof snipers.

O man I can't wait to pull up a chopper in the top of that hotel in gulf. I remember dropping snipers off on that roof many a time in bf2, or hovering over it so the door gunner could take out enemy snipers. Good times.

Now we all wait to see if we are capable of driving the aircraft carrier on wake island. Just imagine parking that big o'l tub right in the bay and then suddenly imploding from the insanity that unfolds

WE NEED ASSIST POINTS FOR PILOTS OF CHOPPERS DICE.
How has this not been patched into their current offerings? If I pilot a chopper in a way that is beneficial to the team (like spawning in allies over the objective) I should get some damn recognition not just let my teammates rack up the points.

All I need to confirm a purchase now is a better (than BFBC2) matchmaking system on consoles (or regional filtering, alternatively).
The reason I stopped playing BFBC2 shortly after launch, was due to the constant lag and resulting rubber banding and hit detection issues. It is clear that DICE are the best when it comes to FPS mechanics, but networking isn't their strong point (yet).
Please consider countries outside the US DICE! :(
(namely Australia in my case)

I would like some of the BF2:SF maps, like Warlord or Ghost town. The battles in the palace were amazing slug fests at times. =FTW= Warlord was great. Even if there is no ziplines or grapple hooks, it would still be great. No place was safe from me and my grapple hook. I even figured out how to get on to the top of the TV station to get those pesky snipers.

I'm shocked at how good the tiny bits of game-play trailer look and even that screen shot above. If they hit those graphics, this game will be jaw-dropping.

I think they will hit those graphics.
They were almost there with Bad Company 2 in terms of having the shaky camera, the blurred out effect and the realistic look.
Almost looks like they are making Battlefield 3 have the realistic look from Kane&Lynch 2 (I know it's a crappy game but some parts of the game looked more realistic than any video game ever) and putting it in an online war FPS. This is going to be awesome.
