Watch space shuttle Discovery's final launch from PlayStation Home premium yacht

Home users! Be sure to step out of your promotional wastelands and secret subscriber enclaves today, for the sake of history. Space shuttle Discovery is taking off for the last time today at 4:50PM ET, and you can watch the whole thing from the confines of the PS3's virtual world.

However, there is a catch. You can't just watch from your own room in Home or the Central Plaza or wherever -- you can only view the launch from the Loot Sunset Yacht, a "premium personal space" available for purchase (previously known as the "Amaterasu Yacht"). Of course, this makes the event sound a bit less "historic" and more like "paying Sony for the privilege of watching your avatar watch the shuttle launch, instead of just watching it yourself on your whole TV screen for free."

NASCAR drivers are paid an enormous amount of money to drive in a loop for fame and entertainment and when they crash it's rarely fatal.

NASA astronauts are some of the best and brightest members of humanity who don't get paid that much by comparison, are doing it for the benefit of humankind and if they have an accident it is nearly always fatal.

Yeah. It's just like watching NASCAR.

@jph89 True that, I witnessed the stupidity of bureaucracy that lead to the plummeting death of those within . nasa was desperate for extra Governmente cash and cooked up a dumb trick to gather already losing interest in the US public by putting an INexprienced school teacher inside. IGNORED the final Schooled Mechanical Technician who Warned the bosses about the O-ring a few days before launch. Covered their rears when questions where than made. All in all: a FUBAR. The most gruesome part of that accident was that they lived until they Hit the water~ Bye~Bye S Shuttle #1. 2 & 3 coming up soon to the end of US involvement in traveling into space~~~

This would've been cool if they hadn't tried to profit from it. Seriously, what the hell?

Wow, If anyone pays for the yachtdownload just to watch a space shuttle launch, then that person would be a SUCKER!

By the time I re-install Home, this will be over and done with.

Since I'm in Fl, I think I'll just step outside and look up.

If I weren't still having connection issues with Home, I would consider this, but... I still get kicked after a couple of minutes, or it would start up, or I get in there for a few minutes (10 at most, last time) and then it kicks me for connection issue. (Yes, running wireless, only solution I have, other than running a 30-40 foot cat-5 cable...)

I wish I could delete the home icon from the XMB

Remember when shuttle launches were an event? Now they go up every other day; to little or no fanfare.

@Negatron Its because all of the patriotism of the cold war was wrapped up in the US/USSR space race.

I don't care though as long as NASA is fully funded. The work they do is of utmost importance.

Playstation Home rarely works as they advertise it to. I'm predicting this event to be an epic FAIL

Can we send Home up in a space shuttle? I'd pay to watch that.
