Thursday, Thursday, Thursday, March 17! Make your way down to the San Francisco Commonwealth Club to see two titans of the "violent games" debate square off in an argumentative deathmatch. We're speaking, of course, of Activision vice president George Rose and California state legislator Leland Yee, who authored the infamous AB-1179; the mature game ban bill that made its way up to the Supreme Court in November.
The two men will be debating the bill alongside Stanford Constitutional Law Center director Michael McConnell, with San Francisco Chronicle editor John Diaz serving as moderator, in a panel appropriately titled "Should Sales of Violent Video Games Be Restricted?"
If you're in the Bay area, you can grab your tickets now. You're not going to want to miss it. We hear there's gonna be points and counterpoints.

So...Activision are the good guys in this instance? That's a change from past trends.

Not entirely sure how I feel about Activision being the side representing reason.

The only thing I can say is thank God it's not Kotick debating.
If he had his way he'd buy the entire courthouse and then demolish it one year later.

I personaly want to be the first to say I think that baning these games is BS make the parents responsible for their kids actions and raise the age limit on video games like teen should start at 16 and mature should start at 18 or 21.

Wow, I really wish there was something like the Commonwealth Club around here, sounds like an awesome organization if they are sponsoring debates like this. Hopefully they post the audio of it later, something like what Intelligence Squared does (a really well done debate program aired on NPR).

Wait, March 17th? Isn't that St. Patty's Day? Sorry, I'll be much too busy getting shitfaced off some good ol' stout to worry about things such as this. Everybody's Irish on St. Patty's Day, you know...

Part of me wants to listen to an audio version of this, but the other part of me knows that the backward logic at play will fry my brain. I guess it would be interesting to hear the thought process of someone that wants to stomp all over the first amendment though. As a cynic, I've got it in my mind that this entire law is an attempt to score brownie points with parents groups (among others), so it would be interesting to know if this guy even pretends to have written this law because he legitimately thinks it will help children in some way.

I dont think we've gone far enough,
I believe nothing should be restricted in games (yes even that) it's all just fictional.

Leland Yee has always been the bad guy. I remember an old episode of G4TV.com where Tina went off on the guy. It was funny and uncomfortable at the same time.

This would be more interesting (and appropriate) if it were immediately followed with a panel entitled, "California's Fiscal Woes: Aren't There More Important Things to Focus On?"
