Ono: Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition won't come to consoles

If you were looking forward to one day buying the "Arcade Edition" of Super Street Fighter IV on a PS3 or Xbox 360 disc (or even 3DS cartridge), you can go ahead and put that money toward something else. (Marvel vs. Capcom 3, maybe?) Producer Yoshinori Ono told Famitsu (via Andriasang) that Capcom has no plan to release the Arcade Edition for home consoles.

The reason lies in the game balance. The Arcade Edition includes characters who are deliberately unbalanced -- we're thinking Oni and Evil Ryu here -- in order to build "competitive spirit" among the people who hang out at arcades and play in short sessions. The home version of Super Street Fighter IV has been designed to better equalize the characters.

Of course, the absence of a standalone console release of the arcade version of the game doesn't preclude the release of Evil Ryu, Oni, Yun and Yang as Super Street Fighter IV DLC -- something Ono has proposed before.

Update: Ono has made several statements on Twitter suggesting that an Arcade Edition DLC announcement will be forthcoming after the release of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. Thanks, Kreg.

totally agree. from what it looks like they're just gonna milk it out as much cash from fans. as for the re-balance issue, its just laziness on their part. Even so they could just release the characters of Oni and Evil Ryu and not allow them to be played till they work out the kinks, like other companies.

funny....i remember capcom saying they needed to catch up with what other primarily western companies are doing and this becomes one of them....

You seem to miss the point. Oni and Evil Ryu are unbalanced intentionally to build "competitive spirit", balancing them for the home consoles would go against their reasoning for including them in the first place.

I was really looking forward to seeing what new characters they were going to add to Super street Fighter IV back when they announced Yun and Yang, I lost almost all my interest in the game when it turned out the only other characters were Oni Akuma and Evil Ryu.

Evil Ryu and Oni are "unbalanced"? Although some arcades in LA only had them up for less than a week (maybe a little longer than that?), a decent amount of people, including myself, found them to be DECENT; Evil Ryu has potential, but Oni is.. laugh-worthy.

If anything, point your fingers at characters like Yun and Yang. Really, there is a reason why there's four (or more, I forget) Yun's in the Top 10 ranking.

What a bullshit answer. They expect us to forget Third Strike and allllllll the 800 different options they gave us for *deliberately making the game unbalanced*?

Soooo many games out there give you nice little extras and easter eggs that can totally throw the game off balance, what's so special about SSF4, that they feel like it's some sort of immaculate development that would require some kind of heretical ceremony just to give the players more content and more fun?

Yeah, AE won't release for consoles, but that doesn't mean he won't release an update that has a different moniker with more balance and more characters.

My bet is that he will release "SSF4: Turbo" for consoles. Bet on it.

On second thought, I wonder if it's intentionally kind of a crappy excuse, to try to quench the hype so they can "surprise" us later with more overpriced DLC.

Not that I won't be getting it, and that it won't be awesome, but why does Capcom feel the need to gouge their most loyal fans?

I bet this makes more sense in Japan, but come on. I literally haven't seen an arcade around here in years, let alone one with GOOD games that people want to play.

Funny yhing that Namco works exatly the other way around when it comes to balancing fighting games out (SC games with arcade release = balanced; straight to console = unbalanced).

To build competitive spirit? Really? Is he sure they didn't just jam the characters in there with little balance checking so they would have more DLC to sell later? That sounds more likely.

I'm pretty sure it's Yun that's not balanced. I haven't been able to play AE, but he's apparently on the level of vanilla Sagat...and Fei Long's apparently even better.

Unbalanced? And what about Sagat, Ryu, T. Hawk, Zangief?! Really, Joystiq, don't think that is the reason...

That is one heck of a misleading title considering all indications show that they will indeed come to consoles via DLC. Yes, I realize that this is speculated and cleared up in the article, but the title is still really misleading.
