In what can only be seen as a sign of the Next-Gen Portables to come, Sony will cut, nay, slash (perhaps even hack) the price of the PSP-3000 to $130 beginning this weekend. The new price removes a considerable $40 from the previous $170 MSRP. Additionally, all 3000-bundled "Entertainment Packs" will be reduced to $160. The PSP Go price will remain $200, for now.
The new price will go into effect this Sunday, just in time for the Academy Awards. "And the Oscar goes to ... value."

I got one for 130 a few months ago when RadioShack was getting rid of their stock (picked up a DS lite for 100, too). Then I sold my go on eBay. It was a great system, but the inability to play some of my favorite games and Sony's pricing on the store was really starting to get to me.
Either way, $130 is completely worth it for the 3000, especially now when pretty much every great game for the console is sub-$15.

@Revving Injuns Considering how easy the original ones are to hack, you can still get a good price for it.

Sweet.
I've actually been looking into picking up a PSP, and this just sweetened the deal.
It seems like every time I browse PSN, there's always a crazy amount of content I get super excited for...only to find out it's all PSP exclusive. Granted some of the prices range from unreasonable to simply bizarre (how the hell did Sony arrive at the very specific $22.99 price point for Jeanne d'Arc?...), but the available library seems pretty vast.
So...yeah. This is pretty awesome. It looks like my Sunday will involve me getting my Peace Walker on.

Wow, the PSP is FINALLY priced low enough to make sense now that the NGP is on the horizon which will suck away some of the lingering interest...
Good value for anyone still looking though.

I wonder if there are any new-ish PSP-1000s for that price? Best model by far, not flimsy cheap plastic.

I like a little curve. Give me a slightly chubby girl over an underweight stick anyday! I guess it's just personal preference. The PSP-1000 just seems so much more solid and actually feels like it was made out of materials relative to the premium price it came out for.

YAY PSP1000 LOVE!! i thought i was the last of my kind. I love the weight on it believe it or not, and like the dude said above me it feels like it actually is made from good materials. I didn't know the newer PSP's were faster at loading games, but at what difference like 10 seconds more. I can wait.

"both have known issues with their displays"
I call BS. No more than any other mass produced handheld consumer electronics device. They may "feel like toys" to you, however they are both quite robust, my launch 2000 has been dropped over the years from heights up as far as 5', completely blow to pieces - battery cover, battery, memory stick...I even once thought the analog nub was dead after a fall. It. was. not.
The 3000 is lighter and has a noticeably different LCD panel, I hate seeing my 2000 up against my wifes 3000, it makes me jealous.
Preference is preference, however you're throwing some bullshit "facts" out there. Dis-information.

Exactly. All these people claiming the 1000 is better than the 2 or 3000 are just insane. If it's your opinion then sure, but to say it's the best is totally wrong.
The 3000 is the best, still. Even my 2000 saw a lot of action ("holidays" in Peru and some deserts in Africa). Its been covered in sand, mud, fell out of a bag pocket onto dense grass whilst 3 metres up, been sat on, rained on, has more chips than your mishandled antique heirloom... but it still works perfectly.
I couldn't have asked for a more robust machine. Then they made the 3000 with its miles better display, built in mic and better buttons.

Uh, it doesn't sound like you know much about the PSP so here's a quick run down.
The 1000 model had 32mb ram. The 2000+ models have 64mb. There's an option in the menus to store cached data in that extra 32mb.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on a PSP 2000+ with data installed has virtually no load time between areas. I can't say the same about my PSP 1000; takes much longer.
Also the PSP 1000 display. I need to perform a seance there's just too many ghosts.

The PSP Go is such a terrible piece of crap.
"Here, you have to rebuy all your games, and it's now $70 more expensive than the regular PSP!"
I doubt it will have another price drop before it's discontinued.

It is however fantastic for homebrew. I've been waiting for one to go down in price enough so I can play NES/SNES roms on it (of games I own! I actually own several hundred >.> as my father is a pawn broker). My Droid OG doesn't really cut it as a rom gaming device cause the D-Pad is on the wrong side.

Target jumped the gun and cut the price last weekend, I picked one up last Saturday and have been obsessively playing the newest MGS on there and P3P, really loving it so far. I was also able to pick up a bunch of cheap games, even new ones, at Gamestop so that made me happy as well.

Indeed, I saw Target's price on the PSP-3000 at $130 yesterday and went online to see if it was a universal price drop. Didn't see anything until today (this article), so I thought it was Target-specific.
I think they screwed themselves up a bit, though; they priced the PSP-only packs at $130, *as well as* the bundled-with-game packs.

@TheOtherJames In no particular order:
LIttle Big Planet
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Jeanne D'Arc
Valkyria Chronicles 2
Patapon 2
I'm told the Metal Gears were excellent, but I prefer that series on the console, so took a pass.
