Using a Cyber Gadget CodeFreak game capture utility, one YouTube user has found the 3DS will run backed-up games and even homebrew applications. In the videos past the break, you can see it using the Game & Watch Collection to launch unsigned code, including a copied version of Mario Kart DS and the Lameboy emulator.
Additionally, it would seem the R4 cart also yielded results on the 3DS. Another YouTube user has discovered that right now the 3DS will played backed-up games from an R4, since it recognizes it as a DS cartridge. Of course, Nintendo could kill compatibility at any time through a system update.
i would rather have non piracy dedicated software hacks. Buying hardware just to have emulators and such doesnt seem right. /me waits for team twiizers.
@DustbinK Yes i know, but everyone assumes "GASP. PIRACY" And, having software hacks wouldnt require supporting sites and companies who make these blatantly for piracy.
@DustbinK And plenty of people that actually use it for legitimate back-up multicart purposes.
Since you have to sell part of your soul to board an airplane these days, space is a premium and if I'm going on vacation for a week or more I'd like to have my game collection with me without having to have a large ziplock bag wasting space.
On international flights it's a lifesaver as well since my whims on what I thought I wanted to play often change. So "planning" on taking just a few games doesn't always pan out. I also use a Supercard instead of the R4.
But yeah, I won't say that I didn't download a few games to find out if I would be interested in purchasing them. I have. About 25 downloads with 20 subsequent purchases and 10 of those are from games I wouldn't have dared betting on without playing them first.
I could have rented but that's also money going away from any subsequent purchase and I don't rent enough to warrant a subscription to GameFly. So, if I didn't have the chance to "borrow" it somehow I wouldn't have purchased them. New at least.
Something's got to give somewhere. Better than buying used, that's for sure.
@ChuckBartowskiX The R4 was designed to circumvent copy protection so that you can run unsigned code. Yeah that means home brew, but where ever homebrew exists there will always be emulation and with emulation comes piracy, You simply cannot have one without the other no matter how honorable any one person personally claims to be in it's regard.
@Mmmmz Man, when I was a kid I lost like at least 10 Gameboy cartridges on vacation or while moving. Kirby's Dreamland 1 and 2, Donkey Kong Country, Supermario Land 2 etc... Although some I might have just lent to other kids who never returned them (I'm looking at you, Markus!). Should I ever have kids of my own, they'll get to play backups only until they hit 16 or something. Until then their originals will rest safely in MY collection!
How so? I'm not misrepresenting the capabilities of the device nor am I misreporting the news here. I'm merely presenting some videos of things readers may not know about the handheld.

Yikes. I would have thought that before the 3DS was approved for manufacturing Nintendo would have asked demanded it meet 5 requirements:
1) Does it block use of the R4? 2) Does it block use of the R4? 3) Does it offer innovative new play experiences that will entertain consumers of all ages, and allow Nintendo to extend its presence in the portable entertainment software market? 4) Does it block use of the R4? 5) Does it block use of the R4?
@copa I think if it was as simple as blocking use of the R4 Nintendo would have manufactured that in ASAP. However, the flash cartridge can change just as the DS hardware can change so I don't think it will matter.
If I were Nintendo, and I knew how to block it with a system update, I'd wait for a ton of 3DS sales first, then block the R4 cart. Afterward, Nintendo would probably get some more DS sales too. At least get a little more cash out of the people who only want to pirate your games. :)
@kgoo867 :~/ maybe they will enable it sometimes when they add the other features...now that I think about it...it was kinda both smart and not so smart for Nintendo to release the 3DS without all the features.I guess it's smart cause they can get the early sales and get the name out before holidays but not so smart because people will think less of it because of the lack of all the intended features....and yet...they haven't forgotten the money printing machine. xD
However, the 3DS could be hacked in time. But this isn't "news." With backwards compatibility in the 3DS, it makes sense that an R4 can still run pirated software on the system (although I would've thought that maybe Nintendo would've taken that into consideration).
I hope Nintendo doesn't go down the cat and mouse route like Sony and MS. It's a waste of time. If they'd just focus on putting out less shovelware and maybe bringing prices down to a reasonable level, piracy wouldn't be such a problem.
@Misanthropic Gamer A reasonable price? What a dollar? People still steal dollar iphone games... It just comes down to self righteous people that think they deserve every game because their mom bought them a ds.
the only reason why DSi hasn´t been hacked yet is the same reason why there is no emulator for the first xbox, nobody gives a damn about that, the 3ds is another story, i can assure you as soon as it appears it´s going to get hacked ASAP, and the fact that it can run old games is nothing but a big hole to explode one way or another in order to get flashcards working with it. And that "update fix everything" note, it´s nothing but trash. We know it and the DS has know it for a lot of time, once again just face it nintendo, that´s how things are.....and with the quantities that is selling i think nintendo won´t be too worry about it, even though they are going to act like if they are.....
If I were Nintendo, I'd release the 3ds while still allowing play through an r4. Then I'd release a video showing it running with an r4 or let someone else discover it and tell the world. Then those who have r4s will sell their dses and buy the 3ds. Why have 2 devices? Then when I release the update in May, surprise...no more r4, possibly a pricked 3ds. Take that pirates...and shell out more money for a new ds AND a new 3ds. That's how I'd stick it to them if I were Nintendo...jokes on them :)
If I were Nintendo, the pirates would sell their ds for money to buy the 3ds. Then the 3ds wouldn't allow r4 play after the update. Then the pirates would be forced to buy a ds again to play the games still on the r4. Possibly they'd also have to buy another 3ds if the update bricked the first one with the anti r4 update. Again, completely hypothetical is I were running the Nintendo show...
@Hunter141072 Umm dude the First and Original Xbox has tons of emulators and apps. You need to youtube it lol. Ppl are still trying to buy original xboxes just so they can get the emulators and apps.
Not sure why anybody's surprised. The 3DS supports DS games through its hardware, meaning the structure of both, at least from a DS point of view, is extremely similar. Just a few lines of code in the R4 firmware and this thing is good to go.
The biggest challenge for hackers will be the 3DS games themselves. Suffice to say it'll be at least a few months before we hear anything about hacking the 3DS for its 3DS functionality and not just backwards compatibility.
So, it's useless and there's little interest in it, durrrr. I mean the PS2, Gamecube and Wii are progressing quite nicely and here we have an Xbox, based off PC architecture for the most part, not going very far. Turok being its showpiece game...
Of course, the dreamcast scene isn't doing too well and I would hope that there'd be real interest in making a refined emulator but on the other hand, most of the good games have been ported or are playable right now and it has a small library of games as it is.
