Catherine conquers Japanese sales charts, Atlus sends mixed messages
104
The extraordinarily weird and difficult Catherine was finally released in Japan this week, and -- go figure -- they loved it. The title topped the sales charts, selling more than two times the amount of the next most popular game, which was no slouch itself: Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Catherine was the top title on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 over there, picking up two slots in the overall top ten. Quite a debut.
Despite the success, Atlus released a statement this week that the game isn't coming to North America any time soon. "Catherine is a Japan-only game," the statement reads, "and there are no plans for a NA release at this time. Sorry about that!" The company subsequently sent an email out to its "Atlus Faithful" mailing list, containing only the above image, whose background looks suspiciously similar to the color of the Catherine box art.

I know subbing something is just as complicated as dubbing it. But i would gladly play most japanese games with subtitles. I dont mind reading and maybe we could get more games!
This is one game i would love to play with subtitles, no matter how nonsensical it can get.

The problem is that North american companies think that people who like subtitles are a minority. That the majority wont touch it unless it speaks their language. They don't understand that the people who actually WANT the game generally dont need or care about english voice overs as long as they can HAVE the game.

In a game like this where there's a lot of speaking, and fast, it'd be a pain to read. Main reason I didn't get Yak 3, due to cut content, was no dubs. The subs went by too fast for me to read that I didn't bother to buy it.

@TheDread Yeah, but as long as there's a small handful of semi-literate kids showing up in comment threads to sneer at the idea of subtitled games and scream about how they don't play video games to *read*, subbing will always be Plan B.

I usually use subtitles when I play through games anyway, so I wouldn't really mind. Though I would perfer a dubbed version.

@maveric101 i definitely prefer subtitles to dubbing, mainly because the english language dubbing is almost always horrible. audio/voiceovers/music can make or break a game. take crazy taxi for instance. one of my favorite games of all time. won't purchase on xbla because the music sucks, which kills the fun of the game. playing japanese fighting games, i always switch the voice to japanese and use subtitles or even no subtitles. their dubbing is atrocious.

I don't mind subtitles because certain games (Resident Evil 1 for instance) dubbed have people sounding like commercial announcers, not actors. But they have done a better job of getting voice actors to read with feeling, so I don't mind a dubbing nowadays.

Resident Evil voice acting is always in English, isn't it? Don't get me wrong, much of it is horribly bad [though actually some of the voice in... eh whatever the latest lightgun game on Wii was... was okay], but I didn't think there was a Japanese version. Could be wrong?
On Japanese-made games, I certainly would prefer to have the Japanese voice if available. Especially for a game like 'Catherine'; the cast has some fairly big names, iirc. That said, it's probably not the sort of game I'd buy.

Odd because I felt Persona, DDS, and every other SMT game had good voice acting for American release. Just because Capcom chooses to crap out on getting voice actors doesn't mean everyone does. Atlus gets pretty good voice actors.

Thank you. I agree with a lot of people here that dubbing usually tends to be terrible, but we're talking about an Atlus game here. In my opinion, Persona 3 and 4 have better voice-acting that almost every game out there. The only games I can think of off the top of my head that might be better would be Half-Life 2 or Uncharted.
And Banjo-Kazooie, such great voice acting.

Are you serious? The cheesy English voices in Crazy Taxi make the game better. It isn't exactly a game you're supposed to take seriously

@KamiKaji To be honest, unless the casting of the English version is terrible, hearing it in a language you understand is closer to how it was meant to be heard, because you were meant to understand it.
I hate dubbing on live action, because it always looks wrong, but animation? I prefer it.

No, no. Don't say anything, don't make this any harder than it already is. Just... go, you did this upon yourself.

Seriouesly, if this game is decent enough to let a 360 game reach the top 10 in Japan, why wouldn't you release it overseas?
Posted: Feb 27th 2011 3:40PM Drakkenfyre said
It's a weird game, dealing with Japanese culture and folklore, and is heavy on the sexual imagery, with several sex scenes.
They know no US or European-based company would touch this for a translations. They probably also know Microsoft wouldn't approve it for release in those countries. It probably would end up being an expensive flop here which wouldn't even recoup the cost of the port, let alone make them money.
Their best bet would be to put it on as a pc downloadable title.

I'm sure the ESRB will ruin the surprise in short order.
I'd be disappointed if they didn't bring it westward.

A multi-platform game charted twice in Japan -- once for PS3 and once for 360?
The 360? Really?
This has to be the greatest game of all time.

As much as I would love to play this, I can't really blame them on the decision.
If people show that they really are interested in playing, It might give Atlus a reason to consider bringing it over to the west.
Atleast the PS3 is region free.

Wait and see if it gets a UK PS3 release and buy that, at least then it'll have subtitles.
PS3, DS/DSi and PSP have very little care for region restrictions, aside from the lost of the ability to buy DLC for them without access to the regional stores that sell them, but really who'd want to spend the extra money after all the money you occasionally have to spend on importing?
