Because Sony sued LG a while back & got their products banned from being sold due to "patents". LG is just returning the favor, so to speak

Not nearly as ironic as the fact that my PS3 used to get compatibility errors whenever I tried to hook it up to my Sony TV, but worked fine on every other one.

Sony: Looks like we are upping the cost of the NGP to $700 because of costs in court! The PS4 will go for $1000, but not before we "leak" it for over 6 months.

they will just cut LG a check or look for more patents that LG infringed on....it will be more of a background thing after this point...

Seems to me this is releated to Sony suing LG a few months ago over phones. Now LG is suing Sony. Up until now, didn't realize they had even sued Sony.

But this can certainly hurt Sony if they don't get it worked out.

the only role sony had that made the blu-ray such a success is having it included in every ps3... in some ways blu-ray may of actually lost to hd-dvd if it wasnt for the fact that ps3s came with blu-ray drives..

@Teus

That was pretty much the only reason it survived, despite being an inferior format out of the gate (though I'm pretty sure it reached feature parity with HD-DVD after a few firmware updates.) It's good for Sony though, since if it had failed it might have bankrupted the company (I believe all of this went down around the time of the exploding laptop batteries and very slow TV sales.)

you guys are all assuming that once microsoft has us by the short and curlies in gaming, that they will play nice with new competitors. they haven't in the past.

we should root for sony, because otherwise the only alternative is nintendo for the forseeable future.

also bluntly, the remedy seems extreme to me. bratz was caught fully stealling from mattel and even using a program called "evidence eraser" to cover it up. the appeals court ruled that the correct solution was to let bratz keep selling and pay damages. the same makes sense for this, assuming sony is guilty.

lol at all the comments like "damn you LG" and "why is LG doing this... they're haters" if their claims are legitimate, then it's sony's damn fault for not paying for patented tech. sony has done this countless of times, and recently to LG.

on a side note, while i hope sony stays in the console market, it'll be bleak if sony ends up paying for every ps3 sold. sony's video game division has already been debilitated in this generation, and sony as a corporation has been shrinking rapidly. it's interesting how in this decade LG has grown bigger than sony, and samsung has made sony a dwarf.

@BigEgo007 Really? After 5 years they now start? No, just stop.

What these consoles can do now? Optimize games to shit that making it half or less of what the game is on the PC and then the PC suffers because Console Ports are the way to do right now.

"Should the court ultimately rule in favor of LG, the console maker would be forced to compensate the company for every single PS3 sold around the world."

I wonder how this would work. For at least the first few years, Sony lost money on the hardware sales and there was no profit. This would be a real kick in the pants if it happened and the amount was high enough.

I think people are overreacting here. IF LG wins and IF the amount is high enough, Sony will be hurt but will not go down. They only will pay out for the consoles themselves, not the software which is where they make all their money. And I dont think they will be forced to stop production on it, they only have to settle on the case and move on.

@friendlygummybear as of july 29th 2010, sony had sold 38.1 ps3's. by now, that amount is probably mid-high 40 million. so yes, a price on every single ps3 sold will hurt alot. this huge case is by no means decided, but if LG wins decidedly (which i kind of doubt), it may forshadow a road of peril for sony's videogame division.

You're all forgetting that this seems to be a "counter-lawsuit" by LG against SONY suing them over phones.

If there's any weight to this claim, they'll settle out of courts for both lawsuits.

Sony has too much pride to just let LG rain on their parade. They will counter sue them & they will keep it in court. Sony is not the type to settle since they started this mess. "

Its Sony sueing LG in the first that caused this whole thing. I guess some of you forgot that Sony sued LG over mobile phone patents and this is LG response to those suits. The the ball is back in Sony court. If both patent claims are true then LG and Sony will probably settle out of court.

@Machiavellian79 lol the other part of that is these are both big companies. This isn't the standard substandard sue some upstart or a private individual who doesn't have the funds to back up the case therefor you win by default case.

This is going to be a knockout drag out, anything you can do I can do better, I can do anything better than you, litigation.

I'd give about 60/40 odds that this gets settled outside court vs turning ugly but if it does go the ugly rout its going to go really really ugly and we are talking thunderdome ugly.

Looking at this injunction again, this is actually pretty big win on LG part. How many times have you seen a suit get to the point of an injunction like this. Also LG has the option to extend the injunction which they will do unless Sony can reverse the decision. This is huge because now Sony has to provide some type of evidence to change the court decision and this might not be something easily done.

Also LG suit is in EU as well as the states so this could lead to a precedent that would really put Sony in a bad place. Sony might actually have to go to the negotiation table under the gun instead of being equal.

Yeah, I serious do not believe that NarutogameKing understands how huge it is for LG to get an injunction on Sony in EU. People are looking at the 10 day part and thinking that is nothing. They are forgetting that LG can and will extend the injunction. They forget that Sony has to reverse the decision or this could end of costing them huge amounts of money. If the injunction get extended, it could be months before Sony could reverse the decision and thats only if they can reverse it. Sony is in the weak position and might have to go to the table with their tails between their legs and give LG the bank account numbers.

You're just another uneducated lackey who feels entitled to everything. That's not the real world. Sorry.

I own a PS3. I'm an avid Sony consumer, not just their gaming devices or software. But you should understand right and wrong, and Sony is clearly in the wrong (as LG's win in this injunction shows). And has been stated earlier, Sony sued (or attempted to) for mobile phone patents that LG may or may haven't been breaching. As a repercussion to that, Sony is now feeling the wrath of a counter-suit done by a company that can stand toe-to-toe with them in a legal bout. And sadly, and rightfully so, Sony will lose this fight. Precedent has been made, which HINDERS Sony's attempt at any appeal and from now on the situation will only become more bleak. I foresee LG being paid royalties in some form or fashion, whether it be for every PS3 sold, or for every PS3 sold -in the future-.
