It's about damn time! So many games are using the Unreal engine nowadays, it'll be nice to know some of those will start showing up in OSX. Big win for Mac gaming!

Too bad it's only run at half the FPS.

Also, I don't think Mac games have featured characters that were quite meaty enough for my liking.

You should really separate those two. Unreal Engine 3 running on Mac OSX, and DirectX11 features for pc.

DirectX is not on Mac OSX. Games which run under DirectX for Windows must run under OpenGL or a Mac-specifical API for Mac.

That's why some games such as StarCraft 2 will show better performance on a Mac with Bootcamp running Windows than running it under it's own OS. Some DirectX features, such as certain texture compression, isn't available.

@VeeDeeVee OpenGL isn't a Mac-specific thing, it's also the API of choice on iOS, Linux, and Android, as well as supported by the Wii and PS3.

Texture compression is a bad example since it's been available in OpenGL and OS X's implementation for a long time.

Also nice to see an advanced game engine that doesn't skate on the edge of vaporware status. Right, ID?

It's cool for Mac users that this is coming out, but if you want to play games on your computer, maybe Mac was the wrong choice.

Or look at it this way - that machine you bought can will soon play (more) games.

When all the computers in my studio were able to play Team Fortress 2, well, that was a happy day.

@making11s actually it was a perfect choice since you can simply reboot into windows when you want to play a game that's not supported in OSX. On the flip side, can you reboot into OSX? Most PC configurations can't, and none of them can legally.

I basically look at Windows as a "game launcher" now, and don't have to deal with it for anything other than clicking a shortcut on the taskbar. The rest of the time I get to use a much more secure, graceful OS.

I find it funny that iOS got Unreal Engine 3 before Mac OS X did... wait, nvm. They were just chasing money. :p

Wait... Why would Epic make Gears for the Mac? That game is published by Microsoft, it should be exclusive to Xbox and Windows, right? Come to think of it, why does Microsoft make any of their software for Macs? They're supporting their direct competitor that way.

You wouldn't see Ford making parts for a Chevy vehicle. Or Nintendo making games for a PlayStation system.

@tendoboy1984

MS bought a large sum of non negotiable stocks in Apple to save the company when it was on the brink of destruction. Besides, Microsoft is in the Software business. If they can manage a sale of Office to a Mac user, thats still a sale for them. In fact, since it's for OS X they can charge more.

I'm interested to see what the demo itself is. I remember when Epic first showed off Unreal Engine 3 one of the tech demos was actually an early mockup of Gears of War, so what might this be?

Any vid of the new tech demo? And I believe these are not pics of unreal engine 3. Unless their keeping that name for it on next gen cnsoles too. Cliffy tweeted it's their benchmark for next gen consoles. We won't be seeing this kind of stuff soon. Supposedly this was running on 3 graphics cards.

You need another article for this Joystiq, with actual details of the presentation.

“The whole idea behind this is to tell the hardware manufacturers that this is what you should be doing down the road.”

"Some things to note: this was only a tech demo – not a new game...Also crucial: Rein noted that the demo was running on three Nvidia GTX 580s."

At the end of the day, though, this isn’t Unreal 4. It’s still definitely Unreal 3, Rein was quick to clarify. He added, however, that if this were to be given a number, it’d be Unreal 3.975. He also noted that this is a bigger leap than the one between Unreal 2 and Unreal 3 – and it shows.

For people that want one, here's an article describing it: http://www.vg247.com/2011/03/03/epic-reveals-mind-blowing-unreal-tech-“this-is-our-proposal-for-what-the-next-generation-of-gaming-is-going-to-be”/
