Infinity Blade more successful than Shadow Complex, Rein says

Though Epic Games doesn't divulge direct sales figures, vice president Mark Rein did give me something to work with: Infinity Blade has been more successful than Shadow Complex. "Hugely successful," in fact.
Right now, if you check the leaderboard data (best overall score) for Shadow Complex, you will see the names of 545,023 players. While Rein's comment doesn't necessarily confirm that Infinity Blade has been downloaded more times than Shadow Complex, the former game's lower asking price – $5.99 versus Shadow Complex's $15 – would make it "more successful" either in terms of downloads or revenue.
If it's revenue, our napkin math indicates the iOS-exclusive title being downloaded by at least 1,362,557.5 people, two-and-a-half times the total number of entries on Shadow Complex's leaderboard. If we're talking number of downloads, Infinity Blade should have at least bested Shadow Complex's 545K units.

He may mean in relation to the cost of development of the game being cheaper, so the gross margin being higher.

Well of course it did. there was 2 factors as to why it sold better...
1) Cheaper
2) The fact that iphone/ipad users are desperate for games that pushes the device. you put out a game thats graphically better than all of the iphone library and it will sell.

This is good news for future projects from Epic on the App Store, although I think that was a given considering how happy they were over the initial take up of Infinity Blade.

What about apple's 30% take on all downloads? I know MS gets a cut too but you need to factor those facts too. Fuzzy math there David.

This game might be more successful than Shadow Complex, but its nowhere near as good. Infinity Blade is essentially punch out meet dungeons and dragons, but once you go through one bloodline you've literally seen everything. The game is a good time waster for a minutes, but I hope he doesn't get too hopped up on this.

It's too bad you didn't stick with it though, all the good enemies are unlocked in higher bloodlines only and all the old enemies get better and more devious attacks. The first couple bloodlines are like training mode so you missed all the mea of the game by stoping at bloodline 1.

@yomachaser I played through maybe 20 bloodlines. The gameplay doesn't switch up really, and even when the enemies start to add combos, by that point you have weapons strong enough to shut them down super quick. Playing through more bloodlines only adds loot, nothing more.

Ya know, people say that if the game isn't made for a bleeding edge PC it is made for casuals, or holding gaming back, etc.
But really, games like this, they make developers work around something. Figure out how render things quicker and better. Hard core optimizing. Instead of relying on a high end machine to just brute-force everything.
Games like this are actually pushing gaming farther, and while I do not own an i-device, I really hope to see more amazing things like this happen.

@Seroth This IMO most definitely is making them look at some kind of Shadow complex game for IOS. Apples download service is worlds bigger than microsofts so it wouldn't shock me if Chair gets lured into lots of IOS releases and few/no xbox live releases. It just makes more money sense.

Plus, Steam seems pretty handy. Team Meat just announced close to 400k units sold. Since there's only roughly 160k (last I checked) people on the Xbox Leaderboards, more than 50% of their sales occurred on Steam.
Now, that's probably a lofty example, but still worst case Shadow Complex would've sold a few more units without really much in the way of increased development costs since Xbox and PC run on similar coding structures.

As the developer they can post it directly to the App Store and get 70% of gross revenues.
With the Xbox Live Marketplace, after MSFT and a publisher have taken cuts, the developer is left with only about ~30% of gross revenues.
Epic probably made about the same off each $6 iOS game and $15 XBLM game.

nice job, guys. this game looks awesome- but due to my not owning a compatible idevice (and i never will) i haven't had a chance to play this one, yet. i do, however- have shadow complex and i am in the minority of people who think it's average at best, and dull at it's worst. if there was a way for me to trade in my more expensive Shadow Complex for Infinity Blade
