What? Matrix sequels? What is he talking about? That never happened.

Seems pretty reasonable and a good idea, as long as they don't make it end on a cliffhanger, that would be the worst

Can anyone think of a time this actually worked in gaming? I think the only time was ME, lol, but may be wrong. But really?

They've been marketing this as a Trilogy since its announcement. So its kind of hard NOT to say there's going to be 2 games after the first. All they are saying right now, is if the first doesn't do well enough, they aren't going to continue with it. Major difference bub.

I'm saying though, isn't this like saying... "Look I'm only betting $5 on this hand, if I win then I will bet another $5 or maybe even $10." Doesn't this concept involve basic monetary judgment? Just sayin...

Nope. Not falling for it again. There are too many unfinished trilogies in my library for me to play this one before all three games are released.

I'll die waiting for Viewtiful Joe 3. :(

Ummm it's Guillermo Del Toro, if the game is half as good as his movies, especially his foreign language films such as "Chronos," "The Devil's Backbone," and the mighty "Pan's Labyrinth," then we gamers are in for a treat. I for one will be buying this day one regardless. So Bring IT ON!

@DevilSei That is kind of obvious so it's stupid to say something like that when they haven't even finished and released the first game of the series.

@MasterD Why? Movies are billed as trilogies pre-release as well. Why can't a game get the same treatment?

He makes a valid point. Advent Rising was suppose to be a trilogy at the beginning but was later scrapped after the first game as it flopped.

@Noksukow or Half-Life, or Street Fighter 1, or Marvel vs. Capcom, or Assassin's Creed, or Mass Effect, or Bioshock, or Dead Space, or Gears of War...

God damn the sequels to those games BLOW

Hrmmm...that's disappointing. I wonder what will be the measuring stick for success. I hope it's not COD or Halo number.

This is one area Son does so well. If Sony stopped supporting Killzone or Uncharted after okay start, we would not have seen all the excellent sequels (maybe not for Killzone).

@ShingoEX Half-Life, Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, Assassin's Creed, BioShock, Dead Space, and Gears of War were pre-planned trilogies? That's news to me, especially considering how SF and MvC barely have a story to speak of (in-game).

Advent Rising and Too Human, on the other hand, were announced well-before release to be the first games in planned trilogies. The latter like won't be completed, though isn't cancelled, the former is long dead with nothing to appease fans left with that earth shattering cliff hanger.

It's rare that a game that's intentionally announced to be a trilogy during the development of the first title, especially new properties, will ever make it happen. It usually ends up feeling unfinished as the devs seem to intentionally leave out parts of the game as a way to sell us a single game in three parts. It also harms development focus since the developers are attempting to think 6 years down the line to game three when they should be putting all their energy into game 1.

I'm excited for this. I'm a fan of Guillermo del Toro (at least his horror/fantasy films), and I love survival horror. I do think they're setting their expectations a bit high from the outset, given the lukewarm reception of most new IPs in the survival horror genre (oh Alan Wake, how I"ll miss you), but nonetheless, I get the feeling this will be a quality effort.

I love the Devil's Backbone but does Del Toro know anything about games or are they just trying to use his name to sell this?

Is the game going to be in spanish, because his english movies are not too good?

@ShingoEX

assassins creed will be 4 games when the story is complete and then we will no doubt have a 5th one. also wasn't there bloodlines? I didn't play that one so I'm not sure how it fits into the story.

Bioshock was planned as a one-off. remember how the story ended? but then it was successful so they decided to make more.

and street fighter? really dude? there have been like 342,535,645 street fighters. that was hardly a planned trilogy

Yes, its rare. But it doesn't understate the obvious. Whether devs tell you or not they've planned in or decided to make it a one-shot before the game is released. You can wrap it up and bring close and then drop a sequel. I mean you could, but not these days when everyone wants a cash cow.

What's really going down is: 'Yes I announced a trilogy, but I'd like to post my retraction in advance, so if it doesn't work out don't say it didn't warn you.' If you still didn't get it-- telling everyone it was a trilogy never happened.
