"Why are Nintendo and Game Freak so terrified of letting this franchise evolve?"

Probably because they don't need to. It's going to print money whether they evolve or not, so...

I think it's more that if they do change it too much they're afraid that they'll ruin what will otherwise sell millions.

If it ain't broke don't risk breaking it.

Although I wish they'd take the risk.

Exactly.

Like somebody stated down below, they've a whole lot more to lose, than they have to gain, by tinkering with the system.

They don't "need" to, but they certainly *should.*

Pokemon has such great potential, imagine if they actually did something truly creative and bar-raising instead of just coming out with these oh-so-incremental tweaks over the years.

They wouldn't just be printing money, they'd be BREATHING it!

I'm sure if they perhaps dared to be a little more creative with the story, music, graphics, battle pacing, etc. they would reach new audiences and soar to new heights.

Imagine if, instead of raising the bar to a whole new level with Mass Effect, Bioware just stuck to Baldur's Gate for 15 years with minor tweaks in each iteration, but keeping the same isometric perspective, classes, story arc, etc. Sure, hardcore fans would probably still be happy with the game, but we'd be missing out on a whole other kind of amazing experience that seizes the potential of their existing success!

Even though the series is starting to go down that path anyway, Pokemon needs to become a mobile MMO.

Oh, lemme also say that Black and White is a step in the right direction. It looks like they're finally trying to inject some creativity and newness into the franchise. I might actually pick this one up. It's just, like I was saying, I wish they'd use all the money they make on this series to raise the bar even higher.

yea but that was gimmicky. if they just made a Wii game that is exactly like the DS games with Zelda graphics and a free roam online component populated with other trainers it would be awesome and another money grabber for them. the free roam may be asking alot on a Nintendo console but with online now, it's certainly possible since you could do trading that way.

Me and my friends agree with you but argue how it would actually work.

on a side note,
I have always thought that they should make the pokemon battles similar to smash bros, where battles are a combination of skill and build of pokemon. Each pokemon's stat would affect its combat, like speed would affect how fast your pokemon would move on screen. The world outside battles could remain the way it is or *gasp* maybe a 3D environment to explore.

RE: Bioware making Baldur's Gate for 15 years. The funny thing is that seems to be exactly what a fair few dissenting fans on their forums (and elsewhere) want. I love BG and it's style as much as the next guy but I will always applaud experimentation and evolution over repeating the same sure fire success. Very pleased to see them finally experimenting with new story telling methods actually after so long with the same template.

I still bought Black though. Pokemon - I can't quit you! The changes that are in this one definitely do make a difference, but I really hope (probably in vain) that it represents the pinacle of this formulae with a 3DS game that changes things up in a big way in the works.

@Acosta02 Same here, but because of my playstyle mostly. I've always played pokemon with an evolving mon list, switching out mons that I don't need for a gym battle, though I have some mons for traveling too. TMs were most definately too awesome to use until I hit the Elite four. The last TM I used was Flash in Gen4 because there are a couple of dark caves that need to be lit up in those games. At least GF made Flash rebuyable for later caves if you don't want to drag out a very weak mon since you don't want to waste moves permanently.

Well they stand to lose more then they would gain if the change it up and it falls completely flat on its face. Really if the just got rid of HM's and maybe beefed up the stories, it would be perfect and not need any other improvements.

@Comet 20 to be fair though, most of the interest lies in what you can do after you beat the story mode. Of course a fresh campaign would be awesome, but it's good enough that they polished so many gameplay aspects.

I also think a good portion of all that nostalgia from Kanto and Johto lies in the fact that most of us played those as little kids.. it's easier to have fond memories when you're easily impressed, lol. But yes, the adventures have been getting repetitive regardless.

Whenever a new Pokemon game launches, I'm always driven away by the horrific character designs. I give in every single time and somehow they end up growing on me though.

2 things wrong with this review.

The whole 3 friends thing hasn't been done before.

Gen 1= You+rival
Gen 2= You+rival
Gen 3= You+friend+rival
Gen 4= You+friendly rival
Gen 5= You+friend+friend+rival

And seasons don't cycle through in weeks. They cycle through in months. One per month. 3 cycles of each season a year.

But yeah the overall structure is definitely different to previous games. The villains feel recycled (they're freakin KNIGHTS though!) but the start is different that if this was an indie game under a different title the internet would proclaim how much better it is than "that commercial Pokemon series"

This game honestly does sound like it was being developed for 3DS but Nintendo wanted to get the game out quick. I still bother me that this is the first new generation Pokemon game that isn't on a new generation handheld.

Yeah, but Pokemon is a long time seller. It doesn't die out after the first month like a lot of games do. And 3DS sales would skyrocket if a new 3D Pokemon game came out for it. Besides, the reason it only sold 400k is because there was only 400k of them in stock.

Hopefully that just means they wanted to put all their effort into the next games then, making them all they can be. Because we all know all the effort they put into the next Pokemon will be worth it. I can't wait for X and Y, with X on 3DS and Y on Wii, fully compatible with each other. And they I wake up.

Well they are already selling them faster than they can make them so I don't see how they can skyrocket... There was an Iwata asks feature and they said they were considering 3DS but the user base of the 3DS is so huge that they decided to go that direction. Don't worry Nintendo already said at a share holder meeting that GameFreak is working on a new Pokemon game for the 3DS and it has already been in development for a year so it will come.

In Japan, Pokémon games are always released in the last quarter of the year, (most of the time in September,) whereas the 3DS was released just a week ago.
I guess releasing a game for a platform that hasn't been released yet isn't a very reliable business strategy.

Also the game is wonderful. There are so many minor but superb touches. I don't want to list them as they were fun little surprises. Ok one- music changes when walking and when you approach people playing instruments.

It feels like a game full of life. Which was always the problem with earlier Pokemon games. There are people getting on with their lives and animated pokemon. 11/10

I've been playing a patched japanese version of this game and, contrary to the author of this article, I partly felt like I did starting Pokemon Red & Blue... Obviously the story hasn't changed much, but for what it's worth, the new pokemons made me forget much about it.

One small thing I did find a bit irritating was the fact that you could pretty much predict when your rivals would battle you (which I'm not going to spoil, since I don't think the author mentioned it here). It gets a bit irritating, but it also make me think that the creators of the series just want you to have as many pokemon battles as possible (so as to avoid much grinding, although I did spend a bit of time grinding in the grass fields -_-;).

I hope I can get a DSi this time around, so I can buy this one and Okamiden. :)
