Looks like a fusion of Meat Boy and Spelunky.

Man, I love Spelunky.

A post about a bullet-hell followed by a crazy-hard-hardcore-platformer indie? Is this masochist-player day at Joystiq?

Because if it is, I'm loving it!

Actually, you can skip any level. I don't even think there's a penalty for it. Not that I've ever skipped a level, of course.

Seriously nobody mentions that this game is clearly a fan-made-sequel/ripoff/homage of the awesome classic Rick Dangerous?

Which incidentally can be played here for free -

In 2010/2011, "Epic" has been replaced with "8-bit retro style...".

Some of my favorite games of the last few years are I Wanna Be The Guy, Battle Kid, Demon's Souls, and Super Meat Boy. I really enjoy games with a good amount of difficulty. It's not the punishment I'm after, it's the rewarding feeling for completing difficult tasks, and the fun of perfecting them.

Spelunky was also a favorite, and this looks like a combination of Spelunky and SMB. So I'm in.

Was not a big fan of this one, I have to say. It kinda reminds me of Spelunky but not as good. I'll just play that/wait for the XBLA version.

Why do all retro 8-bit style games have to be insanely difficult?

Is it asking too much for a retro 8-bit (or even 16-bit) style game with the difficulty of Super Mario Bros, Metroid 1 or Zelda 1? The developers can't design the levels to be enjoyable on their own (think Super Mario World or Super Metroid), so they go with the insanely-difficult gimmick.

What has Mega Man 9 done?

@Elranzer Metroid and Zelda are difficult, cryptic games. Not difficult like Aban Hawkins, but hard. Check out Tempura of the Dead for a retro game that isn't so frustrating. It's actually made by the same guy that did Aban Hawkins.

99% of games these days are too easy. Leave that 1% alone!

I beated it. Not that difficult. The boss is a bitch, btw.
Great game, polished, complete. I bought it together with The Impossible Game, for 1 dollar each. Both were great value.

So it takes the spike-filled castles of Super Mario World and ratchets up the difficulty?

No idea what Spelunky is, and Super Meat Boy is just an overrated flash game. I'll take sprites over Flash any day. I'm old-school to the core. The day Capcom makes a Mega Man game in Flash, or Nintendo makes Mario in Flash is the day I quit gaming. Cheap Flash animation ruined the animation industry, and I don't want it to kill off sprite graphics.

Long story short: I hate Flash.

You don't know much about anything.

Super Meat Boy has sprites. A sprite is just an animated object that does more than act as a background tile. Furthermore, just because it's in Flash doesn't mean it sucks. In fact, Meat Boy is a good example. Most Flash games are poorly coded, so I can't fault you for making that correlation. But a sprite is in pretty much every video game ever.

I thought "The Deep Cave" was a similarly styled game. It was a punishingly difficult platformer released on XBLIG a few months ago, but didn't quite punish you for dying. A number simply flashed across the screen with your total number of deaths, then your character spawned on the beginning of the frame. I had well over 200 deaths, but never felt as though I was not responsible for each of them. Rockin' soundtrack too.
