While Guild Wars wasn't competitive to World of Warcraft in terms of money generated because it had no subscription, it was decently competitive in number of copies sold--7 million.
Agree with you on it being a WoW killer. Both are good games, but I've always liked Guild Wars a little more.

I am extremely excited for this game! I love the way you can combine your powers with another player's for different effects. And the game just keeps looking better and better!

@ForeverAndEver They have to confirm they got rid of the worst part of Guild Wars. In PVP Guild Wars 1, when you died you'd respawn with a penalty which punishes you for dying more than just dying...it lowers your chances of fighting back. They need to confirm there is no pvp-death penalty anymore for it to last longer than the level grind.

Eh, the Death Penalty system is only active in certain PvP match types. And its not like its an unfair system either. You get a chunk of DP removed for your whole team just by killing 1 player.
If anything, its saying you aren't working well as a team. At least Guild Wars understands that you can't balance PvE and PvP together, something that several years still hasn't gotten through that incredibly dense skull of Blizzards.

Eh, its Buy-2-Play, not Free-2-play, but lets not get into Technicalities =P
But yeah, they've said as much that it will remain in the same payment system as GW 1. Most they've said on the NCSoft Store for it were stones that let you combine one items stats with an other items look, but have yet to really specify on usage or price on them.

Thanks for the infor DevilSei.
I have never played any MMO's befor so I'm not up to snuff on what's free to play and what's not and so on so plaease forgive my ignorance. But this just looks to good to pass up.
I will say though with all the games droping this year on the PC its going to be hard to find time to play them all. But this and the Whitch 2 are going to be day one buys.

No healing class needed. Cool. The "revive a downed player thing" looks like Left4Dead.

@DeadInside
Pretty much how it is, though it would be better to compare it to Borderlands, rather than L4D, since if you kill an enemy you get right back up.
And yeah, rather than having something specific for healing, everyone can heal in some way, and everyone will always have a self-heal available.

Wait what? The PvP system was what was great about Guild Wars. Not just anyone could be competitive. You can't just load up a skill bar with 100 skills like in wow, you had to know your opponent and team and create the perfect load out for victory.

Kinda lame Joystiq links to ripped versions of Gametrailer's GDC coverage. Just link to Gametrailers Joystiq, be a man.

Ive been looking forward to this game for years! I'm a big Guild Wars fan and I search for every little bit of info I can. Actually this video is a couple days old. I feel people should shift their attention from this being a WoW killer to instead being a complete rebirth for the entire MMO genre. WoWs a decent enough game if you can get past the graphics, but every MMO tries to copy it; they add just enough to feel different, but in the end, they are all the same and they all fail because of it. The MMO genre has become stale and boring. In recent years I've tried Lotro, warhammer, champions, rift, etc and while they're all fun enough in their own right, they all are so similar and they ALL have the same shortcomings. This is where I see GW2 being the most successful, and that's in trying to advance the genre and make it FUN AGAIN. Everything from a personal story, to an overall story, to dynamic events, fast and fluid combat, to breathtaking environments, amazing concept art, redesigned questing system, fully voiced, THIS is hopefully the MMO that will finally change things up and getting orher companies to put more effort in their work. Not to mention all that and NO monthly fee! That's just icing on the cake.

WOW killer... no... but they will be taking a huge chunk of their market just because WOW is the default. I played WOW for 4 years and stopped right after the Cata launch because they F'ed up my small alt guild with the perk system. Also it got to the point where I was sick of chasing the carrot, being forced to keep up with the Jones'. So I got sick of it and wanted a more single player experience in my MMO. Enter GW2.
Posted: Mar 6th 2011 8:36PM nandokun said
@ForeverAndEver What exactly is meant by 'WOW killer'? Do you mean that it is going to make more money than WoW? That it's going to take all the players away from Wow? Do either of these really even matter in terms of measuring the game's success? The thing that I'm mostly looking forward to is how different the game is compared to every other game that claims to be a WoW killer. I really don't think any comparisons need to be made.

The stupid bitch playing the rogue is so unbelievably bad at playing that it's just mesmerizing. She totally ruined the presentation and I hope she got fired for being absolutely incompetent.

Wow, those videos for the thief gameplay are plain awesome!
If I didn't have such tunnel vision for The Old Republic right now, I might consider this for a long term MMO. But it defiantly seems worth playing.

@ForeverAndEver No single MMO will kill WoW and thats a good thing. For an MMO to kill WoW it would have to appeal to its brain dead fanbase.

@nandokun - Did you not even read the comment that you're responding to? He clearly said that he wasn't referring to sales (i.e. money). He then makes it clear in the second sentence that he's referring to game play.

@Kougeru Uh, death penalty actually made death count in PvP, otherwise you'd have rez-spamming Mesmers and there would be no consequence to dying at all.
Plus, it only makes sense. You just DIED, of course you are weaker, even when magic brings you back to life.

Hi there!
People should really try to expect a good game that they might like... instead of waiting for a WoW / WAR / AOC / (you name it) killer. I think the folks from Arena Net are just trying to deliver a GOOD game. I hope they will.
Can't wait for GW2.
