Mass Effect 2 action figures delayed, second set potentially canceled
40
According to a now deleted forum post on BioWare's official site, Mass Effect 2's action figures have been once again delayed, this time until April. Google, however, caught the quote from a BioWare spokesperson, who said "Once we get the ME2 Action Figure shipped we will not be working with DC Direct again ... Their handling of this issue has been extremely unprofessional and disrespectful to fans."
It also appears that a proposed second set of characters from Mass Effect 2 that were on-track for action figure treatment have been canned, as the figures have been removed from DC Direct's website. As such, the continuing battle for Planet Your Shelf will only be fought by Default Shepard, Grunt, Tali, and Thane when the figures launch on April 27.
[Thanks, Ryan]

What about a Normandy 2?
Posted: Mar 7th 2011 10:12AM oJMan240o said
@mondeca It looks almost exactly like the first Normandy, in fact... the only reason there's even a Normandy 2 is because BioWare had to find some way to expand the in ship space to make it feel like you weren't flying in a tube anymore. They did a good job of that, but they really don't look that much different from one another.

I think the series 2 problems started because when they made Miranda, they broke the mold.

It sucks that they've had such problems with DC.
Should've went with NECA.
I love those guys.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze I was just thinking that it would be great if NECA acquired this license. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze who knows? maybe they'll end up going with Neca for wave 2 and we'll get an awesome Garrus figure...

Meh, Shepard doesn't have enough stubble there anyways. You can't have pretty boy Shepard without out that glorious 5 o'clock on his jaw. Silly people at DC Direct, loosing their deal due to lack of stubble. /sarcasm
On another note, I think all the figures look just a little off to tell the truth. Proportions are off on most of them. Then again, most RL figures are a little bit off.
Besides, we'll probably get a way more epic set from someone else based on ME3 come this time next year.

Ah yes, "Action Figures".
Dolls for men that were supposed to ship last year.
We have dismissed that claim.

Strange. Those don't look like the "blow up" variety.

The only one I was even planning on buying was Legion.
Here's hoping Set 2 production is picked up by someone else...?

NECA makes WAY better looking figurines.
Posted: Mar 7th 2011 1:02PM TheDarkWayne said
@KungFuChaosNinja In some respects, yeah, but a lot of times their figures faces are really really awful. Especially Kratos and just about anybody from their Gears of War line. It probably wouldn't be a big deal for most of the characters, but it would kind of suck when they got to Shepard, Jacob and Miranda.

They really didn't look that good either. DC Direct did a poor ass job with this one.

@sammo21 DC Direct is pretty inconsistent, yeah. The Arkham Asylum figs looked great, except for Batman whose cape color didn't match his cowl.

I'm just hoping they have a decent full set when ME3 rolls around. It would be pretty cool to have the whole team. I doubt I'd buy them all, but it would still be really cool! :P

Why is Henry Rollins wearing N7 armor?
Posted: Mar 7th 2011 1:12PM TheDarkWayne said
Dang, why couldn't Legion and Garrus have been in the first wave? Those figures and the Miranda one looked a lot higher quality than the first wave. What really blows is that even if they do get a contract with another manufacturer, they'll almost certainly be a totally different style or scale, and they'd probably make their own Shepard, Wrex, Tali and Thane figures too. I'd be pretty disappointed if they went with NECA, their faces are usually pretty bad and that's fairly important with Mass Effect's characters, and their recent Crysis 2 figures are just bad.

They must have !@#$ed up pretty bad.
How incompetent do you have to be to not release 4 figured for 2 years? These were originally supposed to be released in 2009.
There are companies out there that will make you a custom, one-off figure in less time than these guys.

@Drakkenfyre I assume you're referring to something like figureprints, which I get the feeling would probably be easier to produce than these. Stuff like figure prints just use an image of your character then run it through a 3D printer that one time. A big series like this has to have the machines in the factory retooled specifically to make these, probably a lot more troublesome than the one figure. Still though, you're definitely right in that they f'd up.

Actually, I was thinking of FigurePrints, but there are companies out there that will make you a custom figure, even if it's sculpted by hand, in far less time than these guys.
If your company produces toys for a living, and there's no problem with the licensing since the IP owner is expressing frustration with the lack of product, you fail pretty badly at taking two years to not get a figure out.
If these figures aren't considerably more advanced than anything else they offer, and there isn't any problems between the companies going on, we don't know what the problem is, but I don't see how they could have handle this this badly.

Dear BioWare,
Give the rights to ALL of your games to NECA! The Player Select video game figure line is top notch. They'll actually make Commander Shepard LOOK like he does on the video game box art.

I'm a comic retailer and our orders for Series 2 of the Mass Effect figs was canceled and we were told they would not be resolicited. So I think its pretty definite that their wont be a 2nd series of figs from DC Direct.
Series 1, which was supposed to drop in August 2010, has an current est. ship date of 4/27/2011.

I can't believe it's taken 2 years to create a plastic figurine; especially from video game characters where the 3d modeling already exists and can just be uploaded to a 3d printer to create molds.
I don't know how I feel about trusting NECA though... their original Isaac Clarke figure is brilliant, but Damon Baird from Gears of War just looks like an autistic burn victim
