As a big LoL player myself, I find that the game's microtransaction philosophy has been a detriment to its development as a better game. Because of it, it seems like Riot has way too much of its focus on making new champions and skins, items that greatly profit the company as soon as they're released when people buy them up with real cash. This greatly neglects the development of new game features that won't come with a price tag. Among the things we've been promised but haven't gotten yet include the Magma Chamber map, the tribunal system, and the co-op vs. AI mode. The biggest crime of all, though, is that Riot has still not implemented replays and spectator mode, things that would massively increase the game's competitive scene. It's good for Riot that LoL is going to be featured at WCG, but its embarrassing to see them use that hackish "eleventh player" method to watch matches.

@Zamzoph Yeah, I made an account just to agree with this. Their constant promises for all of these features and additions are proven to be all talk while they continue to churn out new champions and skins every week to make a quick buck. They don't do anything to address the harassment, abuse of the game systems, and demand for new game modes, yet continue to take money from paying customers.

They'll not be getting a dime from me until I start seeing some of these things. Their "focus on customer service" is a joke.

@Zamzoph I absolutely agree with you Zamzoph. I went from one of LoL's most evangelical followers during beta to quitting it cold turkey and condemning it from on high--just because of the revenue model.

Microtransactions, and even limitations on free-to-play players to some extent, are totally fine. I definitely want to see them do well financially (personally spent $30 on a preorder). But the time cost (hundreds if not thousands of hours) or the alternative cash cost (probably over $100 by now) for unlocking all the champions, ignoring all the other unlockables, is plain absurd and just unthinkable for a more casual player.

And as for the "people" (trying hard here to avoid insults) who respond "you don't need all the champs, they give you 10 free a week"......nevermind I can't do it, I'm so sick of these "people". My numerous arguments on this aside, here I'll simply point to Zamzoph's post and the extremely poor development of the game outside of the things-that-cost-money area.

HoN has a fantastic revenue model for this type of game. $30 to start and microtransactions for things that don't affect gameplay. And yet somehow they've still managed to pull off 80+ heroes, a map editor, in-game VOIP, Mac AND Linux support. So where the hell did my $30 go for LoL?

As a gamer, I'm genuinely sad that the revenue model serves as a barrier for me to play as I'd like to. As a software developer, it ticks me off that the Riot devs are either incompetent or straight-up scamming their players (unless I missed the post back at release that mentioned a 3rd map would take TWO YEARS to develop).

@Zamzoph I disagree to an extent. Think of how many free subscribers there are, that don't pay a dime, or have only payed up to $10 but still play every day. They need a way to keep money flowing in for all of them. Legendary skins may be $20, but with incentives to bring in friends for free, having 12 more free players outmatches those legendary skins in a heartbeat.

That isn't to to say that you're wrong, I think they are in a wrong path. I just think they need to be in that path to keep climbing. Now that they're in China, I bet they'll have more than enough money coming in to head back in the right direction.

@Nmaster64 As a 'customer' for Riot games, whether or not you have spent a penny, your word means something to them. If you would say that to a gaming publisher but never have purchased one of their games, would they care what you think if you weren't press involved? To S2 games would you say it's around the same? Honestly, I wouldn't know. Just from the rumors of HoN, I stay away from the game and the community in general. The fact that something could be worse than LoL's community is sickening and that just there is enough to make me never want to even touch it.

Before you throw Riot Games under the bus, I do believe hearing about some changes though with HoN recently where they're starting to 'nickle and dime' their customers where they only get a lesser percentage of the content as they normally get for 30$, no? Maybe it was wrong, but it's what I've heard.

Anyways, enough of LoL vs HoN because that can go on for hours. What I want to get back to is what you've said about LoL. First of all, yes Riot Games made a mistake announcing Magma Chamber very long ago. New companies (Riot Games is still very new and this is their first title) make mistakes. Are you going to claim that Blizzard and Valve haven't made any either? Google HL2 leaks just for an example of what companies do sometimes. Valve was a bit more veteran at that point in time compared to Riot which is still a 'baby'. My point is when they announced Magma Chamber, they also realized that their userbase started to grow to a large extent with how easily approachable the game is to nearly any type of player. Casual, Normal Gamer, Hardcore, ect. This started to cause server stability problems, if you actually played as much back in the day as you have claimed to you would know that this was absolutely frustrating. The only time you have trouble logging in now, other than the random weekend day every few months, is on patch days. What game doesn't get crowded on patch days?

LoL started out as an experiment and a first game for a brand new publisher with very young CEO's and developers. Do you need any more proof to that other than the fact they use ADOBE AIR? They could have never imagined how large their game has grown to in such a short amount of time, you will be shocked whenever they release their true number of active players. So, pardon me if Riot Games has to work more on things like that, I don't see millions logging into HoN.

You never EVER have to put down a single penny on the game if you don't want to. You say don't give the 10 free champions a week bull? What is a game that is supposed to be free to play if you choose it supposed to give you all of the champions at once so you can go enjoy yourself and then only charge on skins? Skins are only cosmetic and if they only got money off of those they wouldn't be able to hire anybody. micros transaction systems are setup so that they want you to purchase things with real money to take shortcuts. If you even bother responding to this you'll mention something about not enough bundles for people who want to purchase champions without spending a fortune and to that they recently made an announcement about making more.

So, excuse my rant but to just flat out say the things you have about a company and then use bocus things to try and persuade other joystiq readers that may have never played this game before is ridiculous. Come back if you have some real concrete things, I understand my first rant about HoN isn't 'concrete' but at least it's more than yours is.

Great interview!

Glad to hear Riot doing so well. I remember when I first heard about LoL at PAX'07, I was like "Ha, it's abbreviated LoL." and didn't actually play until around last year.

They have come far, and I expect them to go even farther.

I know this is for EU, but all of the files used are taken from the US beta, so it should be even easier if you're from there. Hope this helps!

The Mac beta runs perfectly as far as I can tell. They should just make it available for download and warn everyone that it's still in beta so it may have a few issues. It's already available for download on various torrent sites and everyone that I know who plays LOL on a Mac is already using it.

I wish they would consider adding a way for players to leave the game legitimately. It's frustrating when someone drops out and their champion just sits there, and it's even more frustrating when a game has been running for 2 hours and you need to go to work. They are excessively aggressive with leaving the game.

I think this is a great game but Riot is either a terrible developer or doesn't care. Everything they do is really half-assed and it's a shame. I'm waiting for DotA 2 because I know Valve does things right.

The only thing that comes fast in League of Legends are expensive new skins and champions, which is really disappointing.

The biggest thing they need to do is start seriously head-hunting top engineers. They've been working on so many features that have been coming "soon" for a very long time that continually get knocked back because of stability issues.
They even patched in Co-op Vs AI but have yet to activate it because they are worried about it negatively affecting the stability of the game.
It's gone beyond tolerable that the constant engineer work needed to be done has delayed features to the extent it has.

Play HoN, stop worrying about grinding for the newest heroes or paying for them.

Instead, have the option to pay for cosmetic things that don't have an impact on the gameplay.

Except I have the option to buy cosmetic things in LoL and I gain new heroes over time, giving me a reason to play a game here or there.

Don't forget, LoL is completely free to play!

I'm kind of echoing the sentiments of the first commenters here. At first I thought this game was very good, and it was. This was back in beta before release. I decided to purchase one of the game packages despite it being a free game to play overall. The game showed promise and seemed to have good support from the devs.

After a while it just seemed like the game wasn't going anywhere, so I took a 4 month break, then decided to start playing again.

The game as it stands right now seems to have taken significant steps backward. Riot can not release a proper patch to save their life, and each patch seems to cause more issues with more of the user base than the last. When the game wont even auto-patch cause it can't download files properly, there are some serious issues with how your patcher works. On top of this, and as stated above. Riot consistently shows they are in it for the money rather than to support users. The forums break consistently, support very few features, and are hands down the worst official forums I've seen of any game to date. The bug report system is horrendous, and there is very little support feedback on issues that completely break the game. Riot chooses to consistently push new heroes rather than fix issues in the game code, or provide features they've promised from the beginning. They push new UI 'improvements' through, while the core game sees nothing. And as stated above no replays, no observer mode, no LAN support (for tourneys), no new maps, and Riot has explicitly stated the AIR platform is good for an online game. AHahah what a joke.

The community has started getting more and more toxic on top of all this. From people who just plain rage when other players do poorly. Or people that just completely disregard their teammates. It has become nearly impossible to find a game that is not decided either at the champion selection screen (because Riot forces explicit team comps), or simply because one of the players in the game disconnects or feeds.

For any onlookers, I'd say to skip this (or at least not spend any money on it). And wait for Valves DoTA.

@Sleaker

Fortunately the game is extremely easy to not spend money on. buying boosts to have more variety in runes or buying champions to have more variety in team selection is nice, but it's not necessary to win or reach high ladder levels if you're good.
Me being more than poor, I've spent about $50 on the game. I don't feel any more powerful than when I began, but now I have a good selection of alternate costumes for the champions I like.
