So what's the big deal about PAX anyhow? I have an inkling that I'd like to go next year, but from what I've heard it's just a get together to play a bunch of video games. I already have that in my life, it's called Xbox Live.

@wunwunx It was the first large scale convention made for gamers instead of industry insiders. Now it is more important than any other game convention. In fact, its largely become what it was trying to be different than.

Dude, Live is great, but it's still no match for gaming with people in the same room. While Halo online can be hit-or-miss, it rarely achieves the memorability or fun that characterizes a good 3 Xbox LAN match.

@wunwunx Also, you probably won't be playing Gears of War 3 on Xbox Live on Friday.

I would like to make plans to go next year as well. But the cool thing about PAX is this: You get to play a bunch of quality games months before they're released, and you are surrounded by an entire species of people that also hold something dear to yourself: video games. That means panels, live podcasts. autograph signing, and just hanging out with others with your same interest.

I'd love to go. I want to make it to PAX Prime this year, I just wish that the good ol' 'Stiq would have the same festivities of PAX East over in WA.

It's like ComicCon for gamers, except it doesn't smell quite as bad.

@wunwunx You get to play games before anyone else, get lots of free stuff, talk to and listen in on people from the industry doing presentations, q and a's, or just standing there at their booth. It's fun to be around the whole gamer culture as they're much more sociable than those that go to Comicons and whatnot.

There are people at it. Also, there are all different kinds of people...not just XBL kids. You've got cosplayers, business peeps, LARPers, PC gamers, console gamers of all kinds, board game players.. Thousands of each, and they're all in a good mood. There are concerts, panels that contains the people who actually make games who you can talk with, special events, etc..

It's filled with diversity and all kinds of things to do--just like any other convention. You can network and meet up with like minded folks. That said, if you think playing Halo with faceless internet dudes is the best the world can offer, you probably wouldn't like it.

Oh noes! It departs at 8PM. The Joystiq Podcast ends at 8:30. Guess I'm not going anyways.

Did you order late? I already have my laminated badges since a couple weeks ago. If you have to pick them up will call, I'd probably print out one of everything...just in case. You don't want to be missing something vital.

Matt from Bethesda here... you don't need to bring the ticket thing. You just need to get there as soon as possible. We expect a lot of folks to show up.

So, to keep with the theme and all, people who don't make it on the shuttle in time should just start showing up at the location en masse and take over.
