Mortal Kombat receives R18 in New Zealand (which means it's coming out)
37
Mortal Kombat may be combatting release issues in Australia, but the game is being officially allowed to pulverize faces (and everything else) across the water in New Zealand. The country's Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) gave Mortal Kombat an R18 rating recently, which is to say the game's content is "objectionable except if the availability of the publication is restricted to persons who have attained the age of 18 years."
We imagine Kiwis responding to the classification by taking fistfulls of marmite and punching straight through box sets of Flight of the Conchords, while screaming "Get over here" in the general direction of WB Games Chicago. Or just quietly shouting "hooray!" One or the other.

I love how it says, "restricted to persons who have attained the age of 18 years". It makes it sound like you have to level up to age 18.

It's all part of the grand plan to get the "high score".

You'd be amazed how hard that is. I walked in circles to get random battles outside in the schoolhouse zone for 18 years to pull that off.

Right. And yet, there's a rating that says you need to be OVER 18 to play, it, and if a game gets that rating, they don't release it. That 19th birthday must be some grueling rite of passage, like boxing a kangaroo.

This is good news! Looking forward to breaking faces.
Usually we just get the Aussie version of games, that have been watered down for their fragile little minds, so this makes a nice change

I love it when games are spoken about in lawyer lingo, with all these suit types 'reviewing' their release and uttering comments along the lines of "Oh by gosh, the content in this computer entertainment medium (on a compact digital versatile disc) is of considerably objectionable quality, however we do take into account and propose that if one were inclined to partake in such aforementioned activities that they be of a certain minimum mental maturity in order to engage in such simulated recreations of aggressive acts," when all they're trying to do is figure out how to perform the fatalities whilst circling their clipboard survey answers on a rating scale of "inoffensive" to "objectionable".
Seriously though, for any of you Kiwis reading this article from Christchurch, all the best to you and your families and hopefully the city picks itself up after recent events.

Haha, everyone seems to have a firm grasp on what us Kiwis are like. It's horrible when Oz doesn't get games or get games that have all the cool stuff left out, such as GTA4 and Left for Dead 2 (codenamed 'Left for Bland 2'). I work in a game retail store and it's horrible trying to explain to people that they are getting the version of the game without the stacks of bodies.
Off topic: I still haven't seen any retail store over here to stock Two Worlds Two...

Australia should have this in its R18+ glory by late-april. Last SCAG meeting the attourney generals all agreed, with the government, that the rating should be introduced, its taken this time since then to draw up the guidelines for it.

Actually, scrap that. This link verifys the decision will be finalized at the July 2011 SCAG meeting.
