Card tapping aficionados can take on other summoners this summer through the magic of the internet with Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 on XBLA, PSN and PC/Steam.
The new standalone game will add "new game modes, Planeswalker opponents, decks, puzzle challenges" and more. The title will feature a tutorial to ease new players into the potentially overwhelming card game, along with a "new-to-digital" multiplayer mode called Archenemy, where two allies take on an AI.
PAX East attendees can check out the new Archenemy game mode for Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 at the Magic booth (#648) on the show floor.

I enjoyed the last game, will probably pick this up to.
Since don't really have anyone to play magic here with.
Still kinda wish you could make complete custom decks but oh well.

I personally have been really enjoying Duels of the Planeswalkers, I just really hope they listen to the community and make a easier to edit decks within the game by being able to take out ANT of the cards you dont want, not jus the ones you unlock.

I'm glad as I quit playing MtG because of what a money sink it was and how they basically FORCE you to spend insane amounts of money if you want to be competitive.

I think it's an incredibly fun game, but I never did and never will buy any cards. I am already bad about squandering money, and I knew MtG would only be a trap for me.

@sammo21 they only force you to waste money if you copy a netdeck. Build your own. I enjoy opening packs, seeing new spells and checking out artwork so buy them even though I rarely play.

@Roxas560 I played for over 4 years and consistenty played at local stores and shops on the weekend if permitted. You do have buy to buy cards rather reguarly as what is allowed in the standard and extended has changed dramatically with a new "core set" coming out every year opposed to every 2-2.5 years. You cannot just buy a theme deck and be OK against people who are actually building decks.

@sammo21 playing at FNM or a launch usually cost you around $15 for four hours of entertainment. I always thought shop play was rather cheap.

That's why you find people who like to play vintage/legacy/extended, you can play with older cards and don't have to worry about them going obsolete.
I always have more fun playing casually with friends than playing "competetively" anyway.

There are decks on the net that aren't ridiculously expensive and can be *sort of* competitive. You're not going to win any national competitions but you could do well in local stuff. I theorycrafted an ally mill deck for like... 30ish dollars.
25 dollars if I don't mind playing with Chinese cards exclusively, lol.

Deck building is a must. If it has that, I don't mind another $10 to $15 download. Digital MtG is certainly cheaper than those boxes of cards I used to buy.

@vidguy which is why you arent getting deck building. MTGO is for that. This is something different.
On another note this sounds like dlc that they wanted to charge more for. Disappointment. Will still buy it DotP is one of the best games on arcade.
Where are Game Room updates god dammit?

@vidguy I agree, but I'd also like to see the inclusion of the new sets.

First game was great, but it was full of bugs that Stainless never fixed or took forever to fix.
They never added a variety of features that were oddly missing:
-Play 2HG over XBL
-Tap the lands you want (ruined many well-planned turns with multicolor decks). This was especially odd because the in-game tips said you could do this, but the feature was never included
-Remove core cards from the decks: I understand why there's no deck building, but it was stupid that you were forced to either have a standard deck or an 85 card deck if you wanted to use good unlocks.

After seeing how long it took MS to put out expansion 3 on Xbox I will be picking this one up on Steam.

If you can't afford competitive then don't play competitive. It's as simple as that. To keep up with standard tournament's you actually do end up spending hundreds of dollars. However, just play casual or vintage, that way you don't have to keep updating your cards.

Really wish we could just get a magic online lite version for consoles. Maybe just do a block a year and charge a buck or under for boosters or a discounted box price. They would have to cut out the set being sent on completion though. either way I will definitely pick this up.

Joystiq didn't make one joke about the absolutely terrible and inaccurate name?

Still no Shandalar. That would be the one mode I really would love to have. Deck-building RPG-esque MTG. Surely they could allow building my own monstrous combos in solo play, could they not?
