this is interesting. It seems that at least for EA that digital distribution is taking off like a storm. Now Im curious to know if this 40% also includes PC gaming because we all know that digital distribution is the main way many pc gamers get their content. I just hope they dont try to charge you the same amount for a digital copy as a disc copy like Activision did.

I find it especially funny that people on the Internet continue to argue that Digital Distribution won't take off. I've been having the same arguments with people over games, movies, and music for more than 10 years. Each time people SWEAR that bandwidth issues will NEVER let people consume media digitally.

Now NetFlix Instant Streaming is more popular than Bluray, and EA is doing gangbusters with digital distribution.

not sure why joystiq would completely ignore it, but yes, im pretty sure PCs are included in that, if not making up a large majority.

Unfortunate the main way PC gamers get content is Bittorrent.

It is likely including sales from the EA Store website and DLC. They might be pulling numbers from Steam but I dunno. EA's web store actually has awesome deals all the time, some that muscle out even Steam/Amazon prices. Like when they were selling Bulletstorm last week for 40 bucks or Dead Space 2 for 30 bucks a week or so back.

Also of course XBLA and PSN games. Of which EA is making dozens. Their partners program with indie and small developers is really bringing out some cool games for the Arcade.

Makes sense to me.... I buy most of my new games through Steam these days, it's just way more convenient.

For instance I just today bought Dragon Age 2 off Steam, it took me about half an hour to download and install, when you consider that the closest brick and mortar video game store to me is around 20 minutes away, I would have to spend at least 40 minutes round trip driving JUST to buy the game, not to mention the time waiting in line, paying, and installing the game when I get home.

Digital distribution is fantastic.

That's assuming the only reason you leave the house is JUST to buy a game. Usually, I try to have more than one reason to go shopping, and it typically works in my favor.

"Oh, time to go buy groceries, and I guess I'll pick up a game and some gas as well"

Overall, digital is better though. As long as it's still download to own. I want to have a harddrive specifically for downloaded games in the future.

Eh, until we get to a point where most game players can download a game faster than it would take them to drive to a store to buy it AND on an affordable broadband service... retail isn't going anywhere.

The only reason I'd get a digital release over a physical one if it is significantly cheaper (i.e. some of the crazy-good deals on Steam).

Maybe I'd be more in favor of digital distribution if I actually felt like I OWNED the game (and not just a "license" to play said game that the publisher could revoke at any time). At least I know when I buy a Wii/PS3/360 game disc, I know that I can keep playing it until the day the disc breaks. A digital game? That could be made where I can't play it if my Internet connection is down (see: a couple of Capcom's PSN releases, some of Ubisoft's PC releases, etc.).

Until broadband services become faster (and cheaper) and the digital market becomes a bit more pro-consumer, retail games aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Oh, and I wonder how NPD will react to EA saying they're becoming worthless (or if they'll react at all).

It's funny, I think of this the opposite way. With a physical disc, if it gets scratched, lost, stolen, worn out, etc, I'm screwed. I can no longer play the game I payed $60 for without buying it again. With digital distribution, at least proper, consumer friendly DD, even if my house burns down and I lose everything I own, when I eventually replace my xbox and computer I can re-download the collection of games I paid good money for. I realize that if Steam or XBL shut down I would lose my games, but I really don't see that happening anytime soon, and with most games being so online-centric now, what's the point of having something like Black Ops when the ability to play online with people is gone?

Steam also has a system in place to where if there ever was as shut down you wouldn't be screwed, of course it seems like the only way that would be tested would be 'in situ,' but its not like valve is teetering on the brink, so Im certainly not worried. In fact, they make tons of money, which is interesting to see since a lot of people like to pretend PC gamers never buy anything yet there is an entire market that proves otherwise.

@MyAbsolution The day is coming when physical media will become a novelty. I'd give it max 20 years before digital is the mainstream and physical is the odd man out like buying vinyl.

Yes EA, almost half of your sales are from digital-distribution, now how about a 40% off all games sale on Steam to celebrate? : D

Was this just game sales or does this also include DLC? I'd be surprised if it were just games.

NPD has always been becoming more irrelevant. NPD themselves have even been decreasing the amount of information they allow outlets to provide.

If I'm not mistaken, NPD doesn't even track all retailers, one of them being Walmart. That's a significant portion of the market.

This definitely needs to be said for the people who keep insisting that PC gaming is "dying" because retail sales are taking a plunge. Fact of the matter is, digital distribution is taking the PC platform by storm, and the vast majority of sales come from Steam, GoG, GamersGate, Impulse, D2D, etc., and I'm pretty sure none of them release sales figures (I know for a fact Steam doesn't, but I'm not sure about the others 100%).

At the same time, though, it's saddening to see EA trumpet the triumphs of digital downloads when at they same time they're turning right around and charging $60 for digital games, even though the cost of distribution is way, way lower. I love Steam's sales because they give me games for dirt cheap, and thus I don't mind not getting a printed disc on a case with manual, box art, etc. because...well, it's DIRT CHEAP. But I would never buy anything digital over $20 for that reason, and I most DEFINITELY won't buy anything full price ($50-$60). At $60 especially it's just a ripoff. If companies are saving a great deal by doing digital distribution I fully expect them to pass at least SOME of their savings to the consumer.

Good thing NPD is becoming irrelevant, cause paying to see the data is ridiculous. So now I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not seeing the numbers.
