I wanted to get a 3DS after messing around with it at E3, but none of the good games are really all that close to the launch (Ocarina, MGS, Resident Evil, etc)...

Oh and the fact that the games are $40 a pop now is a little much considering how much value you can get out of iPhone games nowadays (hours and hours for .99c to 4.99 each)

Plus the battery life is sort of a killer. I was expecting it to be lower, but 3-4 hours on the top end... :( not cool

@VIDEOGAMES

Do you buy $60 games for Xbox or PS3? Stop complaining about the prices of 3DS games.

Games have always cost over $20. This whole iPhone/Android thing is a fad. Nothing but casual games. There are tons if copycat games in the App Store, most if which are horrible, yet people still buy them. You really want the future if gaming to be dictated by these types of throwaway games?

If this is the future of gaming, then why are Sony Microsoft and Nintendo still making big-budget console games? Why are they investing millions of dollars into the development if new consoles?

I'd say with the current line-up of games. It's too early for it to be justified having one of these. Sadly...

Buy it for the extras. Get a couple games you want, then wait for the flood of games to come around E3.

Seems like there were a bit too many things that couldn't be done. 3D being the biggest. Perhaps this review should have been held back?

Definitively this review seems more like a preview, with StreetPass, eShop, 3D and launch games lineup not recieving a necessary review.

Even when the 3DS has its North American launch proper, a lot of the features that JC Fletcher doesn't have now still won't be there. With the way the market flows it's a better idea to get a review up now and then review the delayed software later. If there weren't a review then readers would complain that there isn't any real opinion on the site about the device. It wouldn't make sense to wait a whole two months to review just the 3DS. We'll hear more as the games and services become available.

I was worried that the 3D wouldn't work so well with my eyes too, but low and behold I tried one months ago and it was perfect.
Face Raiders. It is brilliant. Perfect 3D demo and the gameplay is quite addictive too.

It's going to own the world.

I don't want to oversell this simple game, so I'll just say it's the most wonderful thing to be included with a handheld system since TETRIS.

SOLD.

I have to say, it's funny to see people going "omg PSP2 must get it!" even though we all know it'll be way to expensive and most of the features on it are overkill (not that I'm not interested in it, but c'mon?), and yet complain the 3DS is too expensive when, from what I've seen, it's the same price as all the DS's when they were launched.

None of the DS's were $250. They were all around $150 at launch.

The PSP was $250 when it launched, and many people thought that was too expensive.

I bought the DS Lite when it was $150. It wasn't right away, but it was probably within the first year. No way it went down $100 within a year.

@Balthier It's about what they're getting for the money. They just don't feel like the 3DS is worth $250, but they think the NGP will be worth it (assuming Sony doesn't pull some stupid crap and charge like $400 for it).

"Overkill" is entirely subjective. I personally think the 3D in the 3DS is "overkill", seeing as it really doesn't add anything to gaming other than depth (which, from a gameplay standpoint, only makes a marginal difference). Two sticks on the NGP, though? That's something that has a lot better practicality.

So let me get this straight, Joystiq. You had the guy who can't see 3D effects, review the 3DS? Next time you guys review a new controller you should have the guys with no fingers do it.

I came down here to say the same thing. No offense to JC of course, but it doesn't make sense to have someone who can't see 3D review a handheld in which 3D is the premier feature.

Ditto to everything said here. Maybe if the 3D was a minor attribute to everything the handheld offers, but considering its called "3DS", probably best to have someone who can see the 3D images review it.

-1 point to Joystiq.
