Are you sitting down? Please, take your time. All set? Great! Earlier this week, leaked shots showing up on FourPlayerCoOp depicted a brand new, kinda futuristic Central Plaza in Home. Relax! Breathe! We're not 100 percent sure whether the shots are conceptual or final, though they look awfully real to us (aside from that woman's impossibly tiny skirt).
Either way, we'll see soon enough as PlayStation's Home update 1.5 will arrive this spring. Or at least those of you who are still using Home will. We won't. Because we aren't.

Home was a neat idea, but the ease of use and load times make it forgotten on my PS3.

*is a neat idea.
Sorry, plenty of people actually use it and enjoy, I didn't mean to imply it was a dead service or anything.

@darrenhupke Its easy enough to use, But it could be better implemented. Its not a huge loading time though, But isnt really worth it if you are going on for only a couple of minutes.

How long has it been since you were on? The load times are a lot better than they used to be.

Yeah, I think Home won't really hit it's stride until next gen. It'll probably be a huge part of PS4. I keep saying it, but I could see cloud gaming (a la OnLive) really taking off down the road.
Imagine, you don't even download your games. Just pay for them, and launch them from Home. The industry manages to cut out used game sales. Updates happen in the cloud instead of via updates. If you're not launching games from your actual console, they become harder to pirate. Somewhere, some super-genius is trying to figure out how to make this work.
That's probably the reason Home is in perpetual beta.

I love Home. I like creating a slutty looking female avatar and having legions of guys try to "get at me". It's quite humorous.

I don't think cloud gaming will replace hard copies or downloadable games, at least not for a few generations, thus i don't see it as the way Home can become even more widespread.
The way it can be more widely integrated in this or next gen is if the Home space is your main XMB. That is, if you were loaded directly into Home when the console starts up and you could access all functionality of the XMB in the home space (your photo albums in an album or wall in your Home apartment, and so forth).
Of course, the original idea of Home was as a place to socialize with other players. I like the service and it has improved considerably since the early days. If at some point it could become an "always on" component of the PS (this or next gen), meaning that you could access it very quickly to check, for example, messages within that space, then it would attract even more people.
I'm not even sure if many people that got into PS3 since 2009 are fully aware that this is in there.

@ptcamn exactly what I was thinking! I'd even love to have a persistent character that exists in home exportable between my games. (at least as an option)
That said, not sure how likely that is if Sony can't even get every developer to include a 'invert sticks' option in their games :(

We all know Joystiq has a bias against anything that doesn't say "Xbox" on it. The only podcast ("fancast") they have is for the Xbox, there is no Nintendo or PlayStation podcast on here.

Wow this article just reeks of fanboy writing. Nice to see Joystiq is still a non-bias reporting site (!)

@Billlop eh, they are just trying to be snarky. Most people do not use Sony Home. I know the last time I seriously used it was around the time Ghostbusters the game came out. I jumped on long enough to do the killzone 3 stuff and get unlock points, but it still keeps me from doing what I got onto my PS3 to do: play PS3 games.

How is talking to people on Home about games any different from commenting on a website about games?

The internet isn't nearly as cumbersome, bloated, and sterile.
If they are going to make it so you have to walk to different areas and rooms to access certain features they have to make it more fun than going through menus, home is not more fun than going through menus.

@Dawglet "Every rational person I know hates Home". rational people wouldn't hate a program that they aren't forced to use. To me that seems the exact opposite of rational.

Fair point. Though I'm not going to lie, I enjoy the interactive aspect. I don't even know why I do, just do. I don't want to say Home isn't flawed. It obviously is. But there is quite a few fun games (for free) in Home now, compared to what used to be offered, it has improved drastically.

Back on topic, that screenshot doesn't really look "real" at all to me - am I missing something? It looks like an illustration.
Still, interesting. While Home isn't amazing, I still enjoy toodling around in it every week or so just to see what's going on.

Harsh words there, although I have to admit, I don't get on either. It's a shame, I remember when I was uber excited about home, what happened, why can't sony get it off the ground.

If they want it to succeed, and voice chat and more in game tie ins, like KZ3 unlock points

I use Home and I enjoy it, actually. A lot of my real life friends exclusively play Call of Duty. I have actually met some people to play some of the more "obscure" games with. So you "journalists" can bash it all you want but plenty of people find use in it.

@TraceurRyuk Part III I enjoy home too, it's not an everyday thing, but i always find some new way to pass the time in home. Freeze ball was my last addiction, but sadly it was hard to find anyone the could beat me.... Oh and midway was a lot of fun too.
