See, this is how you can tell you can tell we're dummies about business. If someone asked us how much we'd spend on a Warhammer MMO in a world where World of Warcraft still reigns and Blizzard has another online game in the pipeline, our answer would be "not much." But THQ's answer, when posed the same question about the upcoming Dark Millennium? Around $50 million, according to CFO Paul Pucino, speaking on a recent conference call.
Just when we're about to get snide about our business savvy, Pucino reveals that the company expects to sell 1.7 million uDraw tablets (remember the uDraw?), up from a 1.3-million-unit prediction in December of last year. 1.7 million. uDraws.
Like we said: Dummies.

You scoff at the thought of releasing a Warhammer 40k MMO when you shouldn't. If it's going to be another WoW clone like most other MMOs, then you'd be in the right. But if it plays like Tribes, which as far as they've shown it appears to, then it will stand to do fairly well for itself.
Also, sick of the concept that if you can't stand up to WoW, don't bother. Most MMOs only need a user base of 200-300k to turn a profit in the first months. (Look at Age of Conan) Once your original capital was made the rest is gravy. You don't need millions upon millions of subscribers to succeed.
Oh, and $50M budget is not actually that crazy. GTA4's budget broke $100M.

@Jennacide
But GTA IV is the most expensive game ever made. It's not like 100 million dollar games are routine.
I pulled a list of the most expensive game budgets in history from the web and here they are as of about 1 year ago. Anything thats come out since then thats higher I really don't know about.
God of War 3 - $44 Million
Killzone 3 - $45 Million
Final Fantasy XII - $48 Million (FFXIII budget is rumored at $72 Million)
LA Noire - $50 Million
APB - $50 Million
Halo 3 - $55 Million
Metal Gear Solid 4 - $60 Million
Too Human - $60+ Million
Shenmue - $70 Million
Gran Turismo 5 - $80 Million
Gran Theft Auto IV - $100+ Million
So, a $50 Million budget for a warhammer MMO puts it right around the 6th highest development of all time. It's not like its some regular number that is common in the industry. Another interesting note is only Shenmue and FFXII are not current generation titles. So, while your right that $50 Million isn't unheard of in the industry its also really far from common.
If anyone has current figures on games thats released since FEB last year I'd love to see them. I think that new Starcraft game had a budget approaching $100 Million.

*choke* I can just see the executive signoff meeting on this. 'It's going to be just like World of Warcraft! But in space! But BETTER! Yeah, this is nothing like the total failure we just made, this is IN SPACE.' 'Okay.'

Different company made Warhammer Online. EA with Mythic made Warhammer Online. THQ is making WH:40k Online. And THQ has always made the WH:40k games.

@The Aquacharger I did actually look up the Wiki page on it. But to be serious, I haven't seen anything from THQ that says they can make a $50M investment recouping game. I like the DoW games, so I'd love to be wrong, but getting investors to put up $50M for a THQ MMO involved a snow job of some sort.

I'm playing the hoping and praying game too, but I've a bit more trust with them, seeing as how they atleast somewhat work with GW.

@Cleric it's not an awful idea, I saw another post about this that went a little more in depth into it, THQ said they're comfortable waiting on it and letting it make it's profit or 7, 8 years. That sounds pretty reasonable, I think, especially given the fairly rabid following 40k has

The only MMO I'm currently looking forward to at all is Guild Wars 2. I really hope they'll usher in the new evolution in the MMO genre. It REALLY needs it.

I would have liked to see 40k more along the lines of your character being a sergeant or similar and controlling a stable of squad mates which function like pets and a shield. The visual size of your squad depends on faction. Imperium and Ork would have squads with large numbers, Space Marine smaller numbers. Pet death cuts into your shield and reduces damage output. So Imperium slowly loses damage but squad members are easier to kill individually while Marines are hard to kill individually but lose large amounts of power in dispersed chunks.

500K subs = 7.5 Million a month = $90,000,000 a year
do you see why people are willing to take a risk on MMO development? WoW will not last forever and even if it does last until end days you can find a place beside it.

That number would be great if they actually averaged 500K subscriptions each month for the entire first year.
